HANOVER — Steve Cline, 60, passed away Thursday, Nov. 14, 2013.

LINDSIDE — Lisa Renee Dixon, 41, of Lindside, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2013.

Harold Lloyd Gill

MEADOW BRIDGE — Harold Lloyd Gill, 73, of Meadow Bridge, passed away Thursday, November 14, 2013, at his home, surrounded by his loving family.

Born November 25, 1939, at Meadow Bridge, he was the only child of the late Harold Willis and Clara Cox Gill.

Lloyd worked as a mechanic for both Boley and Center Chevrolet in Rainelle and was a member of the Springdale Church of Christ.

Surviving Lloyd are his wife of 54 years, Lillian “Jean” Greer Gill; his son Harold L. “Joe” Gill Jr. and wife Janet of Meadow Bridge; his grandson Jeremy Gill and wife Jessie and his great-grandson Mason Gill, all of Backus Mountain; and a special caregiver, Karen Bert of Fayetteville.

Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday, November 16, at Smathers Funeral Chapel, Inc., with Pastor Sherman McCombs officiating.

Friends may call one hour before the service from 12 noon to 1 p.m. at the funeral home.

James R. ‘Jimmy’ Hendricks

CHARLESTON — James R. “Jimmy” Hendricks, 78, of Charleston, passed away Thursday, Nov. 14, 2013. 

Services to celebrate the life of Jimmy will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 17, at the Long and Fisher Funeral Home Chapel in Sissonville with Pastor Buddy Mairs officiating. He will be laid to rest at Floral Hills Garden of Memories, Sissonville. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS — William R. Hilton of White Sulphur Springs and Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., passed away Saturday, Nov. 9, 2013.

Services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 17, at Wild Meadow Baptist Church, White Sulphur Springs, with Pastor Lowell O’Dell officiating. Burial will follow in Rosewood Cemetery, Lewisburg. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 16, at Shanklin Funeral Home, White Sulphur Springs.

Rosemary Spaulding Holstein

Rosemary Spaulding Holstein, 73, of Beaver, went home to be with her Lord on Nov. 15, 2013, following a long, courageous battle with Alzheimer’s in the Raleigh Center in Daniels.

Born on January 19, 1940, she was the daughter of the late Roy and Irene Snead Spaulding.

Other than her parents she was preceded in death by a daughter, Alicia Jenkins.

Rosemary was a devout Christian, devoting her life to Christ and being a pastor’s wife to her dedicated husband of 55 years, Paul Holstein. She was a loving mother and doting grandmother. Her kind and caring ways will be missed by all who knew her.

Other than her husband, Paul, others that will cherish her memory are her children Deanna Milam (Terry) of Knightdale, N.C., Leah Williams (Eric) of Charlotte, N.C., Paula Blakley (Wyatt) of Jasper, Ga.; a brother, Eddie Spaulding of Charleston; a sister Charlotte Stanley (Carson) of Cabin Creek; six grandchildren Jennifer Blaisdell, Seth Jenkins, Kevin R. Short, Zachary Short, Nicholas Short and Ty Short; and numerous other family and friends.

A celebration of Rosemary’s life will be conducted at the Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Chapel, Shady Spring, on Monday, Nov. 18, 2013, at 1 p.m. with Pastor Bud Israel officiating. Burial will follow at the Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens in Prosperity.

Friends may visit at the funeral home from 6 to 9 p.m. on Sunday.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Marketa (Kitty) Lou Hungate

GHENT — Marketa (Kitty) Lou Hungate, 71, of Ghent, passed away Thursday, Nov. 14, 2013, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease.

Kitty was born December 11, 1941. Kitty was a wonderful wife and mother. She was a child care provider until her retirement in 2000. She enjoyed collecting Angels and gardening. Kitty was of the Baptist faith and attended Ghent Freewill Baptist Church.

Preceding her in death were her father, William (Bill) Hornsby, mother, Ora Dathnel Bolen Hornsby; sisters, Doreen Hornsby and Terry Bowling; brothers, Harold Hornsby and Thomas (Tommy) Hornsby; son, Raymond (Bub) Clifford Hungate II; son-in-law, Robert (Bob) Brown; and grandson Christopher (Chris) Wills.

Those left to cherish her memory include her husband of 53 years, Raymond Clifford (Red) Hungate I; daughters, Miranda Brown and Judy Wills and her husband, Vaughn; grandchildren, Erica and Jeremy Cunningham; sisters, Jill Perkins and Erma Delp; brothers, Gary, Billy, Darrell, and Kenneth Hornsby.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, November 16, 2013, at Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley, with Pastor Jeff Shrewsbury officiating. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers will be Joe Rylant, Larry Bell, Jim Sweeney, Shawn Meadows, Robert Wills and John Perkins.

Kevin Keith (KJ) Kendall Jr.

BLACKSBURG, Va. — Kevin Keith (KJ) Jr., 18, of Blacksburg, died Wednesday, November 13, 2013.

He was born in Bluefield, W.Va., on December 11, 1994. He is preceded in death by his grandfather, Van Redden Sr.

He is survived by his parents, Kevin and Wendy Kendall of Blacksburg; sister, Ashley Kendall; brother, Corey Kendall; maternal grandparent, Darlene Redden; paternal grandparents, Joyce and Randall Kendall; uncle, Van Redden Jr. and his wife, Christina, and their children, Jack and Tess, aunt, Kimberly Hurd, and her daughter, Kendall Hurd, great-grandmother, Neva Kendall.

Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, November 17, 2013, at 4:30 p.m. in the Blacksburg Baptist Church with the Mr. Dave Sloop and Dr. Tommy McDearis officiating.

The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the church.

Addie Ratcliffe Maddy

JUMPING BRANCH — Addie Ratcliffe Maddy, 78, of Jumping Branch, went home to be with the Lord, Thursday, Nov. 14, 2013, at her home following a long illness.

Born August 15, 1935, at Jumping Branch, she was the daughter of the late Issac Vernon and Bertha Pearl Fitzpatrick Ratcliffe.

She was a member of Grace Baptist Church, former cook for Summers Co. Board of Education, enjoyed going to Senior Citizens, traveling and spending time with her family and friends especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Preceded in death by her husband, Wilmer Thirl Maddy; companion, O.J. Plumley; and three brothers, Leslie, Franklin and Alpha Ratcliffe.

Those left to cherish her memory include two daughters, Barbara Wood and husband Roger of Nimitz and Sharon Vandall and husband Chuck of Nimitz; five grandchildren, Alan, Michael, Kimberly, Jason and Jeremy; six great-grandchildren, Blake, Bryson, Hailey, Braeden, Nevaeh and Rachael; one brother, Thomas Ratcliffe and wife Phyllis of Nimitz; one sister, Martha Martin and husband Buddy of Pipestem; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held 2:30 p.m. Sunday, November 17, 2013, at the Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors Chapel with Pastor Bob Combs officiating. Burial will follow in the Ratcliffe Cemetery at Cave Ridge.

Friends may call from 12:30 p.m. Sunday until service time.

Lawrence Asbury Parker

BARGER SPRINGS — Lawrence Asbury Parker, 87, of Barger Springs, passed away on Wednesday, November 13, 2013. He now walks with Jesus and his beloved wife of 64 years, Latha Parker.

Born March 23, 1926, Lawrence was the son of the late Joseph and Kate Kraft Asbury. He was later adopted by Albert Parker.

Lawrence enjoyed spending time with his family. He was a graduate of Stoco High School and was employed as a company store manager for Winding Gulf Coal Company. Lawrence also later retired from Sears.

He was a 50-year-plus Masonic Lodge 151 member and Admiral Chapter 50, Mullens. Lawrence was a member of the Corrine Missionary Baptist Church.

In addition to his parents and wife, Lawrence was preceded in death by his brothers, Joseph and Franklin Parker; son-in-law, Donald Spencer.

Those left to cherish his memory include his son, Dale Parker and wife Patsy of Chapmanville; daughter, Debbie Spencer of Jumping Branch; grandchildren, Bret Parker and wife Sue of Burlington, N.C., Ashley Richards of Huntington, Shane Spencer and wife Steph of Crab Orchard, Della Spencer of Princeton, Nathan Spencer of Washington, D.C., Randy Spencer and wife Amy of Claypool Hill, Va.; great-grandchildren, Charity Starling, Sal Cotto III, Shana Spencer, Kaitlyn Spencer, Chance Spencer, Noah Spencer, Parker Spencer, Patrick Spencer, Annika Elam, Aracoma Richards. He is also survived by his brother Ralph Parker and sister Edith Grindstaff Monroe, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, November 16, 2013, at Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley, with Pastor Larry England officiating. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens.

Schuyler Arthur ‘Bud’ Rennard Jr.

Schuyler Arthur (Bud) Rennard Jr. passed away peacefully on Wednesday, November 13, 2013, after a long illness.

Bud was born on September 14, 1939, in West Chester, Pa. He is preceded in death by his mother Dorothy Rennard Dewees, his father Schuyler Arthur Rennard, and his stepfather, Harry B. Dewees.

He leaves behind two brothers Jim Rennard and Harry Dewees (Beth), his wife, Cathy Rennard, and his six children Susan Rennard (Jim) of Long Island, N.Y., Cindy Rennard Beilby (Joe) of Richlands, Mich., Christy Rennard Deprospero (Ben) of Fairmont, Jenny Rennard Poage (Chad) of Stow, Ohio, Michael John Rennard, Amy Rennard of White Sulphur Springs, and his five grandchildren, Erica, Kyle, Ryland, Caleb, and Skyler Grace.

Bud loved and adopted the beautiful state of West Virginia as his home. He enjoyed an adventurous life and loved spending time with his family in the outdoors. Some of his favorite activities included camping, swimming, scuba diving, and water sports of all kinds. Bud enjoyed sharing his love of horseback riding and shooting with the community as a popular instructor. He served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps, was a past president of Rotary International in White Sulphur Springs and was active in the Boy Scouts of America, as both a Scout and a leader. He was known for his sense of adventure and resourcefulness.

Upon earning a B.S. in Resource Management from West Virginia University, Bud had an accomplished career ranging from telephone lineman to senior vice president in the cable television industry.

Eventually his desire for a simpler life compelled him to move his family to the Greenbrier Valley where he served as the Riding Master at The Greenbrier and was active in community life.

He will be fondly remembered by his family and all those who knew him for being a kind, loving, witty and passionate husband, father and friend.

Bud's life will be remembered and celebrated at Rhema Christian Center in Lewisburg. The family will receive friends on Sunday, Nov. 17, 2013, from 5 to 7 p.m. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 18, 2013, with Pastor Stewart Farley officiating. The family wishes to express their appreciation for the love and support received in recent days and over the years.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Rhema Christian Center or Greenbrier Valley Hospice.

John ‘Pitts’ Steffey

John “Pitts” Steffey passed away on November 9th, 2013, in Beckley, after a long illness.

He was born in Pike County, Ky., on December 5th, 1927. He was a resident of Oceana for 62 years. He brought his new bride, Wanda Coleman Steffey, to Oceana shortly after they married in 1951. She passed away on July 22 of this year. Pitts was also preceded in death by siblings Naomi Steffey, May Fern Worrix, Charlie Steffey, Claude Steffey, Leon Steffey, Martha Ellen Elkins, Bonnie Adkins, James Steffey and Loretta Harvel; a beloved grandson, Will Cook; and a cherished daughter-in-law Frankie Steffey.

Left to cherish his memory are his sisters Eula Sarter of Sessor, Ill., Magdalene Scalf of Oceana, Helen Smith of Tram, Kay Horton of Knoxville, Tenn., and Hannah Whisenant of Oceana; his son, Larry Wayne Steffy of Gray, Tenn., and daughter, Connie Cook of Queensland, Australia; and grandchildren Beth Steffey, Sara Greene, and Haley Bunn. Pitts was also blessed with two great-grandchildren, Olivia and Lucas Greene.

Pitts was a veteran of the United States Air Force and worked in the coal mines in several positions, including Mine Foreman, for Pocahontas Coal and Eastern Associated Coal Companies. Pitts was committed to public service, giving over 30 years of service to the Town of Oceana. He served as Town Councilman for several years and also served several terms as Mayor. Pitts took pleasure in fishing and hunting. He loved sports and was an avid fan of the Westside Renegades, the Oceana Indians, and the Mountaineers, even watching this season’s games from the nursing home. He also enjoyed golf and participated in many tournaments, either as a participant or assisting staff. He was even fortunate enough to achieve a “Hole In One,” on one occasion. He had many friends in Oceana, as well as in Davenport, Fla., where he and Wanda spent their winters in latter years. Pitts will be missed by all.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Sunday, November 17, 2013, in the Chapel of Stafford Family Funeral Home, Lynco. He will be laid to rest with his wife in Palm Memorial Gardens Mausoleum, Matheny. Military rites will be conducted by the Wyoming County Honor Guard.

Friends may gather with the family from 11 a.m. on Sunday until time of service at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be family and friends.

Loretta Teberg

Loretta Teberg, 72, of Beckley, passed away on Thursday, November 14, 2013.

Born March 19, 1941, in Beckley, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Myrtle Carlon King.

Besides her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, David Gene Teberg; brothers, Udell, Lloyd, Janis, John and Sherman King; and sisters, Charlotte Sanford and Arzett Mayes.

Loretta was a member of the Family Worship Center and loved the time she spent with family and friends.

Survivors include her daughter, Rhonda Rakes and husband Johnny of Beckley; son, Mike Teberg of Beckley; grandsons, John Michael and Joshua Rakes of Beckley; sister, Elcie Adams of Beckley, brother, Raymond King and wife Shirley of Beckley; and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be 2 p.m. Sunday, November 17, 2013, at Calfee Funeral Home with Pastor Stacy Dingess and Barry Clyburn officiating. Burial will follow at Davis Cemetery in Mt. Tabor. Friends may visit with the family two hours prior to the service.

Grandsons and other family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Van A. Trail

HINTON — Van A. Trail, 88, of Hinton, passed away Thursday, November 14, 2013, at Summers County A.R.H. following a short illness.

He was born April 13, 1925, at Indian Mills, W.Va.; he was the son of the late Dr. and Mrs. William Trail.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Genevieve Farley, and three brothers, Don R. Trail, Virgil Trail and an infant William Trail.

Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Mary S. “Tommy” Trail; son, Stephen D. Trail of Hinton, and daughters, Marilyn Kay Meador and husband Kenneth of Jumping Branch and Vana K. Trail of Beckley. Grandson, Stephen Douglas Trail Jr. of Hinton, and granddaughter, Alison Paige Steele of Durham, N.C., and his best friend, Heidi, his miniature schnauzer.

Van was a retired Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Army and served in World War II. He was a member of LCI 320 at the Normandy Invasion and was serving in Japan when the war ended. He also served as Commanding Officer of the Hinton National Guard before accepting a position at the Pentagon. He was a graduate of the War College at Ft. Leavenworth, Kan., and also Commander of the Officers Candidate School at Washington, D.C. Van was a graduate of Talcott High School and was of the Baptist faith. He enjoyed working on his farm for many years during his retirement.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, November 17, 2013, at Pivont Funeral Home Chapel in Hinton, with Pastors Butch Honaker and Robbie Merritt officiating. Burial will follow in Restwood Memorial Gardens in Hinton.

Friends may call from 12 noon until time of services on Sunday at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Douglas Trail, Kenneth Meador, Dave Sittons, Buck Reed, Leroy Farley, Ed Yates and Larry Bradley.
