WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS — Josephine Hoke Alvarez, 92, passed away Tuesday, March 4, 2014.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 8, in the chapel of Shanklin Funeral Home, White Sulphur Springs, with Pastor Ralph Hubbard officiating. Interment will follow in the Dowdy Cemetery at Glace. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, March 7, at the funeral home.

CLAYTON — William Albert “Bill” Bollenbach, 81, of Clayton, formerly of Kemblesville, Pa., passed away Tuesday, March 4, 2014.

MEADOW BRIDGE — Quinton Garry Bragg, 73, of Meadow Bridge, a native of Rainelle,  passed away March 5, 2014.

As per his wishes there will be no services at this time.

Mona Combs

On Friday, February 28th, our precious mother and grandmother, Mona Combs, went to see her Lord and Savior. She had longed for some time to go to Heaven. Mona was in her 82nd year.

The youngest of three children, Mona Marlene Lemon was born on Aug. 23rd, 1931, at Eunice. She was the daughter of the late Lotus and Nelta Broom Lemon. A brother, Carlos, and a sister, Agnes Milam, have preceded her in death.

Currently a resident of Beckley, Mona lived in Arnett for many years. A devoted wife and mother to her family, Mona had worked in retail as a clerk.

Mona was married to the late Clarence Roy Combs. To this union were born three children. Vicky Waller of Saxon, Terry Combs and his wife, Pamela, of Arnett and Vanessa Clack and her husband, Calvin, of Danville, Calif.; she was the doting grandmother to Jerry Lee Waller and his wife, Mira, Erica Lynn Otey, Matthew Combs and his wife, Tammy, and Eli Combs and his wife, Chrystal; she was the proud great-grandmother of eight great-grandchildren; a special nephew, Andrew Milam, survives as well.

When Mona’s family remember her they recall her love of family, friends, and going to church. They will forever cherish her memory.

Funeral services will be Saturday, March 8th, at 1 p.m. at the Arnett Chapel. Pastors Larry Kinder and Gene Miller will be officiating. Mona will be laid to rest in the Sunset Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the church on Friday, March 7th, from 6 to 9 p.m. and one hour prior to the services on Saturday.

Family members will serve as pallbearers.

Louise Dingess

MADISON — Louise Dingess, 71, of Madison, passed away March 6, 2014, at Boone Health Care, Danville.

She was a member of Hilltop Methodist Church and a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her parents Walter and Erthal Goins Goff and her husband Stonewall Dingess.

She is survived by her daughter, Patricia Green of Madison; son, Kenric Vance of Madison; sister, Nancy Goff of Hilltop; grandchildren, Devin Green of Danville, McKenna Vance of Charleston, Savanna Blevins, Faith Cooper and Hope Cooper, all of Madison, and sister-in-law Paulette Vance of Madison.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Sunday, March 9, 2014, at Handley Funeral Home, Danville, with Alvin Browning officiating. Burial will follow in Danville Memorial Park, Danville.

Janice Irene Gunnoe

In the evening hours of Monday, March 3, 2014, our beloved sister and aunt, Janice Irene Gunnoe, was delivered into the arms of our Lord.

Born on March 1, 1929, at Bolt, she was the daughter of the late Anthony Acord and Stollie Dickens Acord. Mrs. Gunnoe was a homemaker and had lived her life in Bolt. Until declining health she attended the Shiloh Community Church in Saxon, W.Va.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Ray Gunnoe, in April 2000, by sister Laura Acord, and by two brothers, Dennis “Bill” Acord and Ronald Acord.

She is survived by three sisters, Connie Samples and her husband Kenny of Bolt, Eunice Gunnoe and her husband Kermit of Bolt, and Drema Hurst of Waynesburg, Pa. Also surviving are a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel in Beckley on Saturday, March 8, 2014, at 1 p.m. with Rev. Jerry Cantley officiating, and with Rev. Dean Adams as a soloist. Friends may call two hours prior to the service, from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. on Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Park in Beckley.

Family will serve as pallbearers.

A special thank you to the staff of the ICU and 1st floor of the Plateau Medical Center.  You treated not only her but the family with such respect and kindness. May God bless you.

Natalie Austin Hankinson, a former Beckley resident, died Jan. 26, 2014, in Tarpon Springs, Fla.

Her burial was in the Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell, Fla.

David Daniel Jones

BREVARD, N.C. — David Daniel Jones, 72, passed away on Saturday, March 1, 2014.

David was the son of Velma Hungate Jones and the late David Jones. He was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Lacy Jones.

He proudly served his country as a military police sharpshooter for the U.S. Army. He was a N.C. State Trooper. He was an SBI Special Agent for 30 years and served as a captain for the Transylvania County Sheriff’s Office for 15 years. He was a member of the American Legion and a member of the Crime Stoppers organization. He was an avid golfer.

Surviving in addition to his mother are his son, David D. Jones Jr. of Forest City, N.C.; daughter-in-law, Kristi Jones, of Forest City; sister, Brenda Whitt and husband Tommy of Coal City; and his grandchildren: Eric, Sidney and Suzanne Jones.

Funeral services will be held Friday, March 7, at 1 p.m. at Moody-Connolly Funeral Home with the Rev. Glen Wilson officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Burial with military honors will follow at Blue Ridge Gardens of Memory.

Billie B. Lafferty

PAX — Billie B. Lafferty, 81, of Pax, died Saturday, March 1, 2014, at Raleigh General Hospital, Beckley, after a short illness.

Born May 22, 1932, at Pax, he was the son of the late Homer and Willie Opal Huffman Lafferty.

He was a retired coal miner having worked for Milburn Colliery and was a member of the Packs Branch Baptist Church. Billie was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean War.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Ellen Hicks Lafferty; two daughters, Debra Lynn Pritt and husband, Lawrence, of Lively and Mary Kathleen Coll and husband, John, of Fayetteville; grandchildren, Shane Pritt of Bradley, Jason Pritt and wife, Georgie, of Salt Rock, Lorainne Lafferty of Omaha, Nebraska, and Kendra Lafferty of Richmond, Virginia; great-grandchildren, Savannah Pritt of Salt Rock and Kali Lafferty of Omaha, Nebraska; three sisters, Melba C. Thomas of Anchorage, Alaska, Shelby J. Weekly of Fayetteville and Charlotte L. Lewis of Portland, Indiana.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Saturday, March 8, 2014, at Tyree Funeral Home in Mount Hope with Pastor Sam Vance officiating. Burial will follow at Willis Branch Community Cemetery at Pax.

Friends may call one hour prior to the service at the funeral home on Saturday.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial donations be made in Bill’s memory to the Packs Branch Baptist Church Missionary Fund.

Harold Haskel McGuire

Harold Haskel McGuire, 66, passed away on March 4, 2014, at the Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital following a short illness.

Born January 16, 1948, in Springdale, he was the son of the late Harlan (Sonny) McGuire and Retha Kirby McGuire.

He was a member of the U.S. Army and served in the Vietnam War. He also worked for the Brad Riggen Tire Company where he worked on big trucks.

Survivors include his wife Kathy Williams McGuire of Danese; his mother Retha Kirby McGuire of Ecru, Miss.; two brothers, Harlan McGuire, wife Marie and children of Ecru, Miss., and Dale McGuire, wife Barbara and children of White Sulphur Springs. He is also survived by a brother-in-law Steve Williams, wife Brenda and children of Smoot and a sister-in-law Sandy Reed and husband Billy and their children of Daniels.

Services will be at the Wallace & Wallace Funeral Chapel on Saturday, March 8, 2014, at 11 a.m. Burial will follow at the Hanshew Cemetery in Springdale.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service on Saturday.

Jonathan Lee Basil McGuire

GATEWOOD — Jonathan Lee Basil McGuire, 20, of Gatewood, passed away Monday, March 3, 2014.

Jonathan was born July 21, 1993, and was the beloved oldest son of John and Lynn McGuire.

Jonathan is a graduate of Fayette Institute of Technology and a member of the 130th Air Lift Wing, stationed in Charleston, W.Va., having completed his training in December of 2013 as a Crew Chief. He attended Pleasant View Church of the Brethren.

He is preceded in death by his maternal grandmother, Alberta Tincher, and paternal grandparents, Basil and Rachael McGuire.

In addition to his parents those left to cherish his memory include his much loved brother, Tyler, and sister, Courtney; grandfather, Roy Lee Tincher; and many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends who loved him dearly.

Service will be 2 p.m. Saturday, March 8, 2014, at the Pleasant View Church of the Brethren on Gatewood Road in Fayetteville with Pastor Randy McGuire officiating. Interment will follow in Pleasant View Cemetery.

Friends may call from 12 noon until time of service Saturday at the church.

Pallbearers will be Jeffrey Cox, Jeremy Waddell, Kenny Cullum, Brandon Cullum, David Massie and Brian McGuire.

Grayson Meadows

Grayson Meadows, 88, of Shady Spring, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Wednesday, March 5, 2014.

Born on May 16, 1925, he was the son of the late Grace Reed Meadows and Lacy E. Meadows.

He was preceded in death by a son, James D. Meadows; three brothers, Kenneth, Leonard and Lacy (Junior) Meadows, and two sisters, Phyllis Meadows Banta and Lorine Meadows Jones.

Grayson leaves to cherish his memory his beloved wife of almost 61 years, Dedee Marslender Meadows; daughter, Dedra (Mark) Miller; grandchildren, Christina Meadows, Rob (Holly) Meadows, Jack Meadows, Emily Meadows, Delaney Miller, Presley Miller; and great-granddaughter, Aubree Meadows.

In accordance with his wishes, there will be no service and he is to be cremated.

Friends and family are asked to not bring food or flowers but instead make donations in his memory to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.

Lisa Moran Naylor

FAYETTEVILLE — Lisa Elaine Moran Naylor, 56, was murdered by ovarian cancer on March 5, 2014.

Born on August 8, 1957, at Hilltop, she was the daughter of the late Albert and Anna Lounette Aliff Moran.

Lisa was a 1975 graduate of Fayetteville High School and was most recently employed at Wildwater Expeditions until cancer left her unable to work in 2006.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by a cousin, Karen Ferrell, and a nephew, Adam Naylor.

She is survived by her husband of 37 years, Timothy Naylor; son Timothy (Heather) Naylor of Fayetteville; daughter, Holly McDowell and her partner, Amanda Tatum, of Oak Hill; her grandchildren whom she adored, Colton Naylor, Devin, Ashley, Darian, and Cameryn McDowell; her lifelong friends whom she thought of as family, Tama Sweet, Ellen Vera, Kathy Gibson, Sharon (Mike) Barrett and their daughter, Lisa Michele, who was named after Lisa.

Surviving also are her caring neighbors, Gloria Adkins and her sons; sisters, Freda Brock of Knightstown, IN, and Janice (Earl) McGuffin of Waynesboro, VA; her youngest sister, Karla, who made her home with Lisa; her beloved fur babies, Bunny, Bear, Louise, Leo, Pixie, and Blackie; and extended family, friends, and online communities.

Funeral services will be held at 12 noon on Saturday, March 8, 2014, at Dodd-Payne-Hess Funeral Home, Fayetteville.

In keeping with Lisa’s wishes, she will be cremated following the services.

The family will receive friends one hour before the funeral on Saturday.

Lisa loved spring, summer, being outside, going to yard sales, and selling her treasures on eBay. She loved flowers and couldn’t bear to watch them die.

Ralph Phillips Jr.

Our beloved brother, Ralph Phillips Jr., was called home on Feb. 23, 2014. There to usher him in were our Father, Ralph Phillips Sr., and our mother Betty Walton Phillips.

Ralphie was born Sept. 15, 1957. He was raised in Beckley and resided here until the family relocated in 1992 to Winston-Salem, N.C., where he lived out the rest of his life. Ralphie gained employment at Clear Bridge for the maintenance department. He worked there until his health no longer allowed. Ralphie enjoyed watching sports. His favorite teams to follow were Chicago Bulls, Miami Heat and WVU. Other than sports, family was Ralphie’s passion. He liked to call and check on family members often.

In addition to our parents, Ralphie was preceded in death by our grandparents, Verblena King (maternal) and Roman and Margret Phillips (paternal).

Left to cherish Ralphie’s memory are siblings, Debra (Greg) Phillips of Winston-Salem, N.C., Michael (Kelly) Phillips of Beckley; aunts and uncles, Amy Law, Alma Webb Lee, Zenobia Flynn, Gloria Walton, Rolena Phillips, Geneva Harvey, Kennith (Shelia) Walton and Randolph (Carol) Phillips, and a host of cousins, nieces and nephews.

We would like to give special thanks to the coworkers at both of Debra’s employers at Baptist and Forsyth Hospitals. Also, we want to thank the Red Cross from Winston-Salem, N.C. Everyone’s generosity and support during our tragedy has been greatly appreciated.

A memorial service in Ralphie’s honor will be held at 4 p.m. on Saturday, March 8, 2014, at Outreach for Christ Christian Center located at 416 G. St., Beckley, WV 25801.



Sheri Gail Mitchell Robinson

FAYETTEVILLE — Sheri Gail Mitchell Robinson, 40, of Fayetteville, passed away Monday, March 3, 2014, at home.

Sheri was born on December 13, 1973, in Beckley to Clark and Linda Pungen Mitchell.

She loved riding motorcycles, 4-wheelers and hiking and was compassionate toward others while they were sick. Sheri loved being with kids and was a wonderful mother, wife and daughter.

She was preceded in death by her grandfather, Clark E. Mitchell Sr., and other grandparents, Sam and Pearl Coleman and Eugene and Daisy Pungen.

In addition to her parents those left to cherish her memory include her husband, Michael Paul Robinson; sons, Tyler Blake and Dylan Robinson, and daughter, Alyssa Thacker; sister, Lisa Thompson and husband Charles, niece, Erika Thompson, and grandmother, Ruth Mitchell.

Service will be 2 p.m. Saturday, March 8, 2014, at High Lawn Funeral Chapel, Oak Hill, with Pastor Justin Seay officiating. Interment will follow in High Lawn Memorial Park.

GHENT — James Edward Rollins, 65, of Ghent, formerly of Oceana, passed away Tuesday, March 4, 2014.

The Wyoming County Veterans Honor Guard will conduct military rites. Burial will be in the Kopperston Community Cemetery, Kopperston.
