William Grady Amar
William Grady Amar, 53, of Beckley, was born April 26, 1960, departed this life June 15, 2013, following a short battle with cancer.
Grady was born in Fort Dix, N.J., the first African American and first male born in that hospital, to Samuel N. Amar and the late Louella O. Saunders-Amar.
Grady was a 1978 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School where he was an avid member of track and field and baseball. Grady attended Beckley College majoring in drafting before going into the U.S. Army.
After serving in the U.S. Army, he relocated to Detroit, Mich., where he worked as a Draftsman and Surveyor. He returned to West Virginia where he worked as a mine surveyor for Alpha Natural Resources. Some of his enjoyments and hobbies included baseball, hanging out with friends, listening to music, making CDs, and dancing.
Grady leaves to cherish his memory his father, Samuel N. Amar; former wife, Rosalind (Franks) Amar; adopted daughter, India Hutcherson; sisters, Sharon Abrams, Carolyn “Schotzie” Amar; brother, Bernard Amar; nieces, Leteshia Abrams, Kenyata Amar; great-niece, Keyleauna Amar; special brothers, Lucas Snead, Robert Saunders, Ron Hickman, and Herbert Simpson; special sisters, Tina Donald, Connie Scott, Sandra Gray, Marlene Saunders, Caroline English, and Lillie Moore; a special niece, Hyedia Saunders; special friend, Rosetta Simpson, and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, friends, and his “whole Detroit family.” Special thanks to Carlton Cunningham.
Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 22, 2013, at St. Paul Baptist Church, 129 Rice St., Beckley. Rev. Walter Leach will officiate. Friends may meet one hour prior to services. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Park in Beckley. American Legion Post 32 will perform military rites.
The family will receive visitors at 103 Grant St., Beckley. We would like to thank Raleigh Regional Cancer Center, WVU, and Hospice of Southern West Virginia. Words cannot express the thanks we give Rocky for the care of our brother and her husband. We love you.

Cloteile Hodge Belveal
STEPHENS CITY, Va. — Cloteile Hodge Belveal, 87, of Stephens City, formerly of Packs Branch, W.Va., died Wednesday, June 19, 2013, at Hidden Springs Senior Living at Bentonville, Va.
Born February 12, 1926, at Price Hill, W.Va., a daughter of the late Elbert L. and Nina Elizabeth Williams Hodge.
She retired as a secretary from the U.S. Department of Agriculture in Washington, DC, after 30 years of service and was a member of the Packs Branch Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by one brother, Emerson Hodge, and one sister, Leona Hall.
Survivors include one son, Ronald Belveal and his wife, Lynda, of Stephens City, Va.; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; three sisters, Sylvia Rosenshine of Waynesboro, Va., Doris Miller of Luray, Va., and Orquida Hurd of Mt. Pleasant, S.C.; two brothers, Richard E. Hodge of Waynesboro, Va., and Glenn M. Hodge of Harrisonburg, Va.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 22, 2013, at Packs Branch Baptist Church, with Pastor Sam Vance officiating. Burial will follow at High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday evening at Tyree Funeral Home in Mount Hope.
Men of the church will serve as pallbearers.

Sandra Elaine Graham Bjork
Sandra Elaine Graham Bjork, age 67, of Flat Top, passed away at the Raleigh General Hospital in Beckley following a short illness.
Mrs. Bjork was born on June 3, 1946, at Odd, W.Va., and was the daughter of the late Lacy Graham and Edith Reed Graham.
Mrs. Bjork was a retired secretary and bookkeeper, was a former employee of Flat Top Family Clinic, and was a former employee of the Wood’s General Store and the Odd, W.Va., Post Office. She had also worked at Matherly Machine Shop at Flat Top.
In her spare time she enjoyed gardening, listening to music, and spending time with her grandchildren.
Mrs. Bjork was preceded in death by her brother, Jack Graham, and her sister Patricia Ann Richmond.
Those survivors left to cherish her memory include her husband of 43 years, Steve Bjork; three children, Kevin Moerke of Columbia, S.C., Bryan Bjork and his wife Chrystal of Old Eccles Road, Beckley, and Tiffany Moerke of Beckley.
Brothers, Lacy Tom Graham and his wife Naomi of Flat Top, and George Graham and his wife Ellen of Sophia; a sister Brenda Hogan and her husband Ted of Crow. Four grandchildren, Ashli Moerke Bragg and her husband Coleman of Norfolk, Va.; Dillon Moerke of Columbia, S.C.; Stephen Dewayne Bjork, Haley Nicole Bjork. “Adopted” brothers and sisters Zelmar Lilly Jr. and his wife Debbie and their son Zelmar Lilly III and his wife Kim (and their son Hunter).
Funeral services will be conducted to Celebrate The Life Of Sandra Bjork on Saturday, June 22, 2013, at 11 a.m. at the Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home Shady Spring Chapel, with Rev. Jerry Brown officiating. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens at Prosperity.
Friends may visit with the family from 6 to 9 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be Edward Graham, Zelmar Lilly III, Zelmar Lilly Jr., Dillon Moerke, Stephen Bjork, and Chris Hogue. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Independence Patriots High School Baseball Team.

INDEPENDENCE, Ohio — Franklin R. Cox, 79, of Independence, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Tuesday, June 11th, 2013, while surrounded by his wife of 56 years, Jean (nee Harvey), and two children.
Born to Charles Woodrow Cox (deceased) and Idella Nelson Cox (deceased) in Balkan, Ky., Frank was preceded in death by a brother Charles Cox (Agnes) and sisters Allie Johnson (Walter), and Hazel Allen (Joe).
He is survived by sisters Eva Windsor (MacRae), Elsie Covey (Jack), and Penny Holshouser (Brice).
Frank was loved and will be missed by his wife, Jean, daughter, Donna Trattar (Pete), and son David (Laura), and four loving grandchildren: Daniel Trattar, Steven Trattar, Maggie Cox, and Katie Cox. Frank was a 1952 graduate of Trap Hill High School, Surveyor, W.Va.

Charles William ‘Bill’ Osborne
Charles William “Bill” Osborne, age 91, left his earthly home peacefully to join his beloved wife Irene in Heaven on Thursday, June 20th, 2013.
Born April 16, 1922, he was the son of the late John Larkin and Maggie Ball Osborne.
Bill was a lifelong resident of Hinton.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Irene Weaver Osborne, three brothers, John, Warren, and Thomas Malcolm, as well as four sisters, Frances Wiseman, Virginia Amick, Wilma Meadows, and Betty Sims.
Bill is survived by daughter Linda and her husband Steve Meadows and Janet and her husband Lee McClung of Newport News. Also surviving are four grandchildren, Cris Meadows and wife Missa, Tom Meadows, Mika Gumm and husband Eddie, and Kaylee McClung of Newport News. Four great-grandchildren, Sean and Nash Meadows and Gracie and Cy Gumm; sister-in-law Sarah “Sis” Osborne of Beckley, and numerous nieces and nephews also survive.
Bill served five years and eight months with the National Guard in the Army during WWII. He was discharged from the Army in June 1945, and retired from the Army National Guard in 1972 after 28 years of service. He was the 1st Sergeant of the Hinton National Guard for 23 years. After retirement, he was assigned to Army Reserves for 10 years. Working with the C&O Railroad from 1945 to 1972, he retired with a disability after working as yard brakeman, and later being promoted to conductor and finally yardmaster. Bill was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church of Hinton, where he served as deacon for over 50 years. He was also a retired former member of the Hinton City Council, as well as an avid hunter and fisherman.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 20th, 2013, at the Pivont Funeral Home Chapel in Hinton, with Pastors Butch Honaker and Warren Gilpin officiating. Burial will follow in Roles Chapel Church Cemetery at Forest Hill. Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
Deacons and members of Harold Callahan Bible Class of First Baptist Church, as well as former members of the Hinton National Guard Unit and officers, will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers include Ted Bartgis, Bud Johnson, Charlie Updike, Kent Hellems, and Estel Adkins. The family wishes to thank his special caregiver Susie Huffman and the staff of Hospice of Southern WV, especially Kathy, Connie, and Michelle, for their loving care and support.

Larry N. Owen Sr.
SUFFOLK, Va. — Larry N. Owen Sr., 73, of Suffolk, Va., went to be with the Lord on June 19, 2013.
A native of Junction City, Ark., he was predeceased by his father, Andrew D. Owen, his mother, Syble Green, and his brother, Lonnie Owen.
Larry faithfully served more than 20 years in the United States Air Force, serving a tour in the Vietnam war, among other duties around the world. Upon his retirement from military service, he worked for Beckley Coal Mine Co. in Beckley, W.Va., and he also worked for and was retired from the Flowers Bakery Company in Norfolk, Va.
Larry never fully retired, though, as he spent his last years with spending time with his family, and restoring his family’s house in the mountains of West Virginia — his favorite place on Earth.
Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Virginia R. Owen; son Larry Owen (Angela) and daughter Jennifer Jahnsen (William), all of Suffolk. “Grandpa” will forever be missed by his devoted, loving grandchildren: Andrew R. Owen, Josh Jahnsen, Katie Owen, Eryn Owen, and Emily Owen, all of Suffolk. They were the pride and joy of his life. Additionally, he is survived by three sisters: Carolyn White (Chester) of El Dorado, Ark., Bobbie (Bruce) Dalton of Conway, Ark., and Rosie Castle of San Antonio, Texas. A whole host of nieces, nephews, cousins, “special” grandchildren, and friends will also cherish memories of him.
In lieu of traditional services, Larry’s family will be celebrating his life at their mountain home in West Virginia later this summer. The family will receive friends on Friday, June 21, 2013, at his son Larry’s residence, 6313 Whaleyville Blvd., Suffolk, Va., from 5 to 8 p.m.

ANNANDALE, Va. — Linda Sue Thomson, 65, of Annandale, Va., formerly of Lansing, W.Va., passed away at her home Thursday, June 6, 2013.
Born May 17, 1948, at Lansing, she was the daughter of the late James Horrocks and Ernestine Holliday Horrocks Strunk.
Linda was retired from the Federal Government working for the C.I.A. for over 40 years.
Linda loved antiquing, crafts, reading and collecting owls; she was of the Baptist faith.
Other than her parents she was preceded in death by her stepfather, Fred S. Strunk; a brother-in-law Michael Cope; nephew Lindsey Thompson; a stepsister, Connie Hodge; two stepbrothers, Garnie Strunk and Freddie Strunk Jr.; and two aunts.
Those left to cherish her memory are her son, Adam Thomson of Alexandria, Va.; three sisters, Carolyn Cope of Charles Town, W.Va., Ellen Thompson and her husband Charles of Henderson, N.C., Barbara Joyce Bekooy and her husband Bram of Noordwijkerhout, the Netherlands; brothers, James E. Horrocks and his wife Judy of Edmond, William Douglas Horrocks and his wife Barbara of Harpers Ferry, W.Va.; stepbrother David Strunk of Hilton Village. Aunts Irene Prater of Orrville, Ohio, and Carol Campbell of Hico; Uncles, Dale and John Holliday, both of Orrville, Ohio; seven nieces and nephews, 13 great-nieces and nephews, several extended family members and friends.
