Ruth E. Hedrick Arnold

LINCOLNTON, N.C. — Ruth E. Hedrick Arnold, 93, of Brookwood Road, Lincolnton, a native of Greenbrier County, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2012.

Service will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 6, 2012, at Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home, Lewisburg, with Brian Arnold officiating. Burial will follow in the Wallace Memorial Cemetery, Clintonville.

The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until time of the service Saturday at the funeral home.

Mable Marie Dixon Bennett

OAK HILL — Mable Marie Dixon Bennett, 91, of Oak Hill, died on Tuesday, October 2, 2012, at Bowers Hospice House in Beckley.

Born May 16, 1921, at Minden, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Herbert and Mattie Tatum Dixon.

She was a homemaker.

Mrs. Bennett was a member of the Oak Hill First Presbyterian Church. She was a 1940 graduate of Oak Hill High School.

The family would like to thank the staff at Hidden Valley Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Oak Hill and Bowers Hospice House in Beckley for the care they provided Mable.

Her husband, Wallace R. Bennett Sr.; two sons, Dr. Barry R. Bennett and Wallace R. “Cabby” Bennett Jr. and three brothers, Robert Dixon, William Dixon, and Clifford Dixon preceded her in death.

Survivors include one son, Robert E. Blackburn and wife, Loretta of Fayetteville; one daughter, Janice Bennett of Oak Hill; a daughter-in-law, Anna Bennett of Oak Hill; two grandchildren, Wallace R. “Ross” Bennett III and Sarah Beth Bennett Powers, and four great grandchildren, Grace Bennett, Bryson Powers, Abby Bennett and Elijah Bennett.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Friday, October 5, 2012, at Tyree Funeral Home in Oak Hill, with Pastor Harry Fuller officiating. Entombment will be at High Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum, Oak Hill.

Friends may call one hour prior to the service on Friday at the funeral home.

CAPITOL HEIGHTS, Md. — Mrs. Jo Ann Virginia Berger, 72, of Capitol Heights, formerly of Beckley, died Thursday, Spetember 27, 2012.

Elmer Jay Berry

WHITBY — Elmer Jay Berry, age 46, of Whitby, passed away at Bowers Hospice House in Beckley, on Tuesday, October 2, 2012 .

Born on November 30, 1965 at Freezeland Mountain, W.Va., he was the son of Effie Berry McKinney of Hinton, W.Va.

Mr. Berry was disabled all of his life, and had lived most of his life at Whitby.

A sister, Patsy Sears and a brother Robert Berry preceded him in death.

Those survivors left to cherish his memory in addition to his mother include his siblings, Gladys Bolen and her husband Clayton of Fireco, Nora Martin and her husband James of Hinton, Georgia Mae Sears of Hinton, James Berry of Whitby, Darrell Berry of Whitby, Donald Berry of Whitby, Lacy Berry and his wife Drema of Sullivan, and Richard Berry and his wife Janet of Coal City; several nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services will be conducted to Celebrate The Life Of Elmer Jay Berry on Saturday, October 6, 2012, at 11 a.m., at the Rose and Quesewnberry Peace Chapel in Beckley, with Rev. Bill Reed officiating. Burial will follow at the Maggie Lilly Cemetery at Mitchell’s Ridge, W.Va.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday.

Pallbearers will be Dylan Adkins, Wally Gardner, Jacob Mann, Steve McBride, Mack McBride, and Jody Davis.

Lillian R. Blankenship

Lillian Rockwood Blankenship, died Monday, Oct. 1, 2012, at 3:19 p.m., at her home on Lilly Street in Beckley.

Lillian was a beloved wife, loving mother, dedicated teacher, a trusted friend, and most of all a special child of God.

Lillian has one surviving child, Bruce Blankenship of Beckley.

The Rite of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Sunday, Oct. 8th at 3 p.m. in the George W. Seaver Chapel at the Seaver Funeral Home, 1507 North Walker Street, Princeton. Rev. Randy Adkins of the United Methodist Temple, Monsignor Samuel Sacus and Rev. Mr. Donald Wise of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church and Fr. Sam Haddad of St. Nicholas Orthodox Church all of Beckley will be officiating.

Lillian will be laid to rest in the Gate of Heaven Cemetery at Monte Vista Park in Bluefield.

A rosary will be recited at 5:30 pm led by Tony Tipane on Saturday evening at the funeral home. Lillian will lie in repose from 6 to 8 p.m. where her friends may visit her.

Roger Lee Blankenship

CLAYTON, Ala. — Roger Lee Blankenship, 64, of Clayton, formerly of Saulsville, passed away Monday, September 24, 2012.

Thelma Irene Hinkle

CRAIGSVILLE — Thelma Irene Hinkle, 94, of Craigsville, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, September 25, 2012, in Summersville Regional Medical Center, Summersville.

She was born October 7, 1917, in Nicholas Co., W.Va., to the late Clark and Mary Eva Hamrick Gibson.

Irene was a Christian by faith.

She worked at Richwood Wholesale from 1961 to 1983 as a secretary.

She also played the piano for the Methodist Church in Richwood and the Methodist Church on Hinkle Mountain for many years.

Irene was a joy to be around.

She also lived for and loved her family and the Lord.

Irene was a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother; she was very loved and will be missed by all.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Spurgeon Hinkle and her son, Spurgeon D. “Jinks” Hinkle.

Survivors include a grandson, Spurgeon Douglas Hinkle III; two great-granddaughters, Amanda Jane Hinkle and Amy Jolene Hinkle, and a daughter-in-law, Loretta June Hinkle.

Memorial service will be 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 7, 2012, at the Little Laurel Baptist Church, Richwood, with Pastor Jack Cole officiating.

Clyde D. ‘Bud’  Hughes

ANSTED — Clyde D. “Bud” Hughes, 93, of Ansted, passed away at Ansted Center, Monday, October 1, 2012, following a long illness.

Clyde was born July 27, 1919, at Nallen, W.Va., he was the son of the late Clyde S. Hughes and Annie Daley Hughes. He was preceded in death by a sister, Rachel “Tink” Hughes.

Bud enlisted in the U.S. Navy prior to World War II. During his 9 years in active service, he received five honorable medals. He was a coal miner from 1951 to 1953. He served as a police chief in Whitesville. He was a security officer in American Ship Building Company and Libby Owens Ford Glass plant. He retired at age 60 and spent a lot of his time on charity work to assist children in need of medical assistance. He was faithful to help make applebutter at the yearly Country Roads Festival in Ansted.

Retirement gave him a chance to pursue an important love of his life — music. Bud was a talented harmonica player who was ready to play wherever and whenever he was needed. On many occasions he used his musical abilities for fundraisers to help the needy. Mr. Hughes played with the remaining “Drifters” from Hank Williams Sr. band. He cut his first CD at age 81. He was so excited to let the public hear the music that he had loved and played all of his life. Because of his loyalty to his harmonica, his CD will be played during his visitation and funeral.

Mr. Hughes does not have any known survivors. He was loved by many people whom he became acquainted with during his lifetime. Bud resided at the Genesis Ansted Center in Ansted where he made many friends who will miss and remember him for many years.

Funeral service will be 1 p.m., Friday, October 5, 2012, at Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home Chapel in Ansted, with Father Roy Gene Crist officiating. Entombment will follow in the Chapel of Rest Mausoleum in Victor.

Friends may call at the funeral home chapel noon Friday until funeral time.

SUMMERSVILLE — Ernest McKinney, 79, of Summersville, died Tuesday, October 2, 2012.

DURBIN —  Helen Kathleen Vandevander Moats, 83, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2012.

Charles Floyd O’Dell

SUMMERSVILLE — Charles Floyd O’Dell, 81, of Summersville, died Tuesday, October 2, 2012, in the CAMC Memorial Hospital.

He was the son of the late Dock Lemon and Della Evans O’Dell and was born at Fowlers Knob on July 4, 1931.

He was retired from the W.Va. Division of Highways, a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Korean War and member of the Summersville VFW Post No. 131. He was a member of the Richwood Moose, a former member of the Touch of Class Car Club and the 2010 Potato Festival Grand Marshall.

He was also preceded in death by brothers, Donald and Clyde O’Dell and sisters,  Kathleen Perry and Pauline Meeker.

Surviving are several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, October 6, 2012, at 11 a.m. in the Gilgal United Methodist Church at Mt. Nebo with Chaplain Gary Moore officiating. Burial with military honors by the Nicholas County Honor Guard will follow in the church cemetery.

Friends may call at the Waters Funeral Chapel in Summersville from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday evening.

Clifford ‘Sonnie’ Phillips Jr.

MULLENS — Clifford C. “Sonnie” Phillips Jr., 87, of Mullens, passed away Wednesday, October 3, 2012.

Services will be 1 p.m. Sunday, October 7, 2012, at the First Presbyterian Church, Mullens. Entombment will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens Mausoleum Hope.

Friends may call Saturday from 6 to 9 p.m. at the church and one hour prior to services Sunday at the church.

Kent Ramsey

GLENS FALLS, N.Y. — Kent Ramsey, 53, loving husband and father, of Glens Falls, formerly of Brandon, Vt., and Lewisburg, W.Va., passed away on Sept. 29, 2012, following a courageous battle with cancer.

Born July 15, 1959, he was the son of Lenox and Katherine Ramsey of Glens Falls. He graduated from Glens Falls High School and Adirondack Community College in Queensbury, NY.

A disabled veteran of the U.S. Air Force, Kent loved to fish, camp, hike, and cruise to the islands. He loved learning, and totally enjoyed his quest to restore this country to its Constitutional roots. He was a Master Mason. He also loved animals and raised chickens, ducks and goats on his homesteads in VT and WV. Most of all, he enjoyed spending time playing stuffed animals and other imaginative games with his beloved 8-year-old daughter.

In addition to his parents, Kent is survived by his wife Alecia and daughter Kellie of Queensbury; brother Kevin and sister-in-law Carlene Ramsey of Queensbury; sister Karen McGinn of Queensbury, NY; nephews Nicholas Ramsey, of Los Angeles, Calif., and Colin McGinn, of Dallas, Texas, nieces Jennifer Ramsey, of Queensbury, NY, and Kyle Kolkovich and husband Richard, of Denver, Colo., an uncle Gene Varney and wife Gail of Glens Falls, NY, and many cousins across the country.

He was predeceased by his maternal grandparents Pearl and Benoni Varney and paternal grandparents Jenny and Lenox Ramsey Sr.

Kent has graciously donated his body to the Albany Medical College Anatomical Gift Program. There will be a memorial service at the Adirondack Friends Church, 27 Saratoga Ave., South Glens Falls on Friday, Oct 5th, at 2 p.m.

The family would like to thank the VA hospitals in Albany and Beckley, WV, for the care they gave Kent for the past two years.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to the American Cancer Society.
