Lois Kidd Adkins

MATHENY — Lois Kidd Adkins, 65, passed away Tuesday, September 25, 2012.

A celebration of Mrs. Adkins life will be 11 a.m. Friday, September 28, 2012, at Clear Fork Valley Baptist Church with Erwin Gregory officiating.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday, September 27, 2012, at the funeral home.

Ethel May Bays

RAMSEY — Ethel May Bays, 79, formerly of Ramsey, W.Va., while surrounded by a loving family peacefully went to be with the Lord on Monday, September 24, 2012, at Bowers Hospice House in Beckley. She will always be remembered as a deeply devoted Wife, Mother and Grandmother who openly professed her love of Jesus Christ and taught her children Biblical values at a very early age.

Previously employed at Plateau Medical Center in Oak Hill. Her interests included gardening, quilting and cooking

Ethel May Bays was a true role model in love and compassion to not only her family but in her willingness to give whatever she had to those less fortunate.

She dedicated many years of her life as a caregiver to several people in the area as well as to her mother Lucy Skaggs who passed away at age 79.

Other than her parents she was preceded in death by two infant sons, Robert Dale Bays and Herschel Franklin Bays.

She is survived by her loving husband Robert Bays; sister, Francis Stanley of Ansted; three brothers, Frank Skaggs of Oregon, Wayne Skaggs of New Mexico, Delmas Skaggs of North Carolina; seven children, Karol Haynes and husband Charles of Oak Hill, Helen Whited and husband David of Beckley, Marcelle Cole and her husband Darrell of Victor, David Bays and wife Brenda of Victor, Leland Bays and his wife Joann of Burlington, N.C., Jody Hornsby and husband Gary of Fayetteville, Kathy Bragg and husband Ken of Fayetteville; 15 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren and her pet dog Sneakers.

Service will be conducted at 1:15 p.m. Thursday, September 27, 2012, at the Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home in Ansted, with Pastor Morris Nutter officiating. Burial will follow at Chestnut Grove Cemetery at Nallen.

Friends may call from noon until 1 p.m. at the funeral home.

The family would like to thank Bowers Hospice House for their special care and advice during this most difficult time.

Nonoieve Agnes Culver

SUMMERSVILLE — Nonoieve Agnes Culver, 69, of Summersville, went home to be with the Lord Tuesday, September 25, 2012.

She was the daughter of the late Walden Hansford and Ruby Dorothy Ramsey Morris and was born at Nettie, on February 28, 1943. She was a homemaker and primitive Baptist by faith.

She was also preceded in death by her husband Aaron; foster son, David Hamon; brother, Stanley Gordon Morris and sisters, Melva Jean Morris, Abby Gail McCutcheon and Mildred Deloris Morris.

Surviving are a son, Kevin Culver and wife Stacy of Tioga; three daughters, Cyglenda Vickers of Copperas Cove, Texas, Mellanie Jarrell and husband Perry Ingram of Guston, Ky., and Vanessa Martin and husband Terry of Danese; five brothers, Sherley of Leivasy, Arnold, Gilmer, Freddie, Sterling Morris, all of Nettie; three sisters, Norma Wiley of Nettie, Sharon Cochrum of Rupert, and Barbara Hughart of Craigsville; nine grandchildren, and one great-granddaughter.

Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday, September 27, 2012, in the Waters Funeral Chapel at Summersville with Brother Sherley Morris officiating. Burial will follow in the WV Memorial Gardens at Calvin.

Friends may call at the funeral chapel from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday evening.

James Robert ‘Chip’ Cunningham

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — James Robert “Chip” Cunningham, 50, of Daytona Beach, formerly of Richwood, passed away on Monday, September 24, 2012

Per his request, Mr. Cunningham’s body was cremated and a private service for the family will be held at a later date. Interment will be in Mountain View Memorial Park, Richwood.

Aldine Layman

COLCORD — Aldine Layman, 72 of Colcord, passed away on Monday, September 24, 2012.

Born September 29, 1939, she was the daughter of the late Jessie and Barbara Rickman Wright.

Aldine has been a faithful member of the Colcord Presbyterian Church for many years; she enjoyed quilting and playing computer games.

In addition to her parents, Aldine is preceded in death by her brother, Roger Wright.

Those left to cherish her memory include her loving husband Freddie Layman of Colcord, W.Va.; daughters, Cathy and husband Roger Lilly of Davis, W.Va., Renie and husband Steve Mason, of Bolt, W.Va.; three grandchildren, Justin and John Mason of Bolt; Alix Lilly of Davis; four sisters, Lois and husband Bob Cromes, of Kettering, Ohio, Jenny and husband Don Lovell, of Temecula, Calif., Shawnee Phillips, of St. Albans, W.Va., Sherry and husband Roger Graley, of Glen Daniel, and a host of nieces, nephews and extended family and friends.

Earls S. Miller “Poo,” 84 of Beckley, passed away Sunday, September 23rd, 2012.

Jennings Murphy Sr.

Jennings Murphy Sr. of Beckley, formerly of Mingo County and White Sulphur Springs, departed this life on Sunday, September 23, 2012, at the Veterans Hospital in Beckley, WV.

Born on April 4, 192,7 in Lindsey, W.Va., he was a son of the late Thias and Julia Norman Murphy.

In addition to being a loving father, grandfather, uncle, and friend, Jennings was a veteran having served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

Preceding him in death in addition to his parents, was the mother of his children; Mae Mahon Murphy and a son Jimmie Murphy.

He leaves to honor his loving memory his daughters; Nellie (Jim) Woods, Theresa (Don) Dewitt, Renea (Jim) Damron, and sons; Jennings (Audrey) Murphy and Timothy Murphy. He is also survived by 16 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces and nephews.

His funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. on Thursday, September 27, 2012, at Shanklin Funeral Home, White Sulphur Springs with Pastor Roger Murphy officiating. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Cemetery, White Sulphur Springs.

The family will receive friends two hours prior to the service at the funeral home.

Alan Wade Naylor

PERSINGER — Alan Wade Naylor, 51, of Persinger, died Monday, September 24, 2012.

Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, September 26, 2012 in the Mausoleum Chapel at West Virginia Memorial Gardens at Calvin, with Pastor Pat Greene officiating.

Friends may call one hour prior to the services at the Mausoleum Chapel.

Paul Ivan Phillips

CORINNE — Paul Ivan Phillips of Corinne, went to be with the Lord on Monday, September 24, 2012. His quiet and gentle nature will always be remembered by those who were blessed to know him.

One of eight children, Ivan was born July 17, 1928, at Saulsville, W.Va. He was the son of the late Lacy and Susie Tolliver Phillips.

Ivan was a faithful member of the Sand Gap Old Regular Baptist Church, serving as a clerk and deacon since 1964. Each Saturday evening and Sunday morning, he faithfully was present when the church doors opened, and his smooth voice led the congregation in singing. He loved to garden and to build and repair things.

Ivan had a successful career as a machinist having been a graduate of the first machine shop class of Wyoming County Trade School. He was employed by American Armature, Eastern Associated Coal, Slab Fork Coal, and Phillips Machine Inc.

In addition to his parents he was also preceded in death by three brothers Hersie, Marvin Lacy, and James Harold.

Survivors include Vadah Shrewsbury Phillips, his wife of nearly 63 years; one daughter, Delois Jordan, of Barboursville, W.Va.; and four sons,  Charles, of Eagle Rock, Va., Dennis, and his wife, Rhonda, of Blacksburg, Va., Everett, and wife, Diana, of Flatwoods, Ky., and Jeffrey and wife, Kathy of Lake Worth, Fla.

“Papaw” was blessed with 12 grandchildren: Stephen Phillips, of Mesa, AZ; Brian Phillips, of Barboursville, WV; Ashley Smith (along with husband, Matthew), of Princeton, WV; Austin Phillips (along with wife, Jacklyn), of Blacksburg, VA; Bradley Phillips, of Flatwoods, KY; Andrew (along with wife, Nikki), of Raceland, KY; Riley, Lacy, and Mary Reagan Phillips, of Lake Worth, FL; Christopher Weaver, of Wellington, FL; Aerial Bledsoe (along with husband, Jeremy), of Johnson City, TN; and Hannah Jordan, of Barboursville, WV. In addition, he was blessed with four great-grandchildren. He is also survived by one sister Geneva Dixon of Saulsville and three brothers Bryce of Saulsville, Glen of Belle, W.Va., and Roger Darrell of Liverpool, NY.

Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday, September 27, 2012, at Sand Gap Old Regular Baptist Church, with Elder Verne Blankenship, Elder Russell McCoy, and Elder Lonnie Mullins officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. today at Tankersley Funeral Home, Mullens, and one hour prior to services Thursday at the church.

Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Irene G. Stewart

MATHENY — Irene G. Stewart, 96, of Matheny and the Wyoming Continuous Care Center, went to be with her Heavenly Father on Sunday, September 23, 2012.

Born June 9, 1916, at Coon Fork, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Jesse and Dana Halsey.

Irene loved to garden, working with flowers and canning her own home grown vegetables. She loved spending time with her family and sharing special memories with them.

In addition to her parents, Irene was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Oley Stewart; a daughter, Helen Stewart Hamblin; sons, Jimmy W. Stewart and Floyd Glenn Stewart; granddaughter, Francine Hall; grandson, Timothy Stewart; sisters, Berdie Mullens, Virgie Jewell and Annie Gunter; and brothers, Greeley Halsey, Troy Halsey, Oscar Halsey, Woodrow Halsey, and Avery Halsey. Irene was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Those left to cherish Irene’s memory are two daughters, Doris Hall and husband, Robert of Orient, Ohio and Rita Young of Lucasville, Ohio; four sons, Charles Stewart and wife, Kathy of Toledo, Ohio, Jerry Stewart and wife, Bonnie of Carleton, Mich., Lacy Dale Stewart of Matheny, and Buren Stewart and wife, Cindy of Matheny; granddaughters, Sherry Papier and husband, Al of Sylvania, Ohio, Kim Sparks and husband, Harold of Toledo, Ohio, Dana Stewart of Toledo, Ohio, Marge Coffman and husband, David of Genoa, Ohio, Amanda Pedigo and husband, Rich of Toledo, Ohio, Morgan Humphries and husband, Billy of Petersburg, Va., Leslie Stewart of Hopewell, Va.; grandsons, Chuck Stewart and friend, Kimberly Hasapes of Toledo, Ohio, Christopher Stewart of Morgantown, W.Va., Wally Stewart of N.C., Michael Stewart and wife, Melissa of Danville, Va., Dale Lee Stewart and wife, Trish of MT, Greg Stewart and wife, Julie of Toledo, Ohio, Jeremy Stewart and wife, Jody of Toledo, Ohio; Elige Stewart of Mich., and Travis Stewart and friend, Melissa Skelton of Va.; 27 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

In keeping with her wishes, Irene’s visitation and funeral services will be held on the same day. Funeral service will be 2 p.m., Thursday, September 27, 2012, at Evans Funeral Home Memorial Chapel with the Rev. David White officiating. Interment will follow at Palm Memorial Gardens, Matheny. Lois Walker

On Monday, Sept 24, 2012, our most loved Lois Walker, of Princewick, died at Montgomery General Hospital following a long illness. She was 80 years of age.

Lois was born third of ten children on April 11, 1932, at Allen Junction, W.Va.  Her parents were the late Lewis and Lizzie Phlegar Bell. Her brothers Glen, Claude, Clifton and Clyde have preceded her in death.

Lois was married to the late Harry Walker.

Left to cherish her memory is her daughter, Ann Griffith and her husband Steve of Beckley; grandsons, Chad and wife Heather Adams of Nitro, Zachary of Beckley; great grandson, Alexander Adams of Nitro; sisters, Pauline Phillips and husband Ralph of Beckley, Jackilene Cooper and husband Lowell of Toledo Ill., Lorene Young of Beckley; brothers, Danny Bell and wife Nancy of Coal City, Gilbert Bell and wife Betty of Silvis, Ill., and many nieces and nephews and friends that loved her dearly.

When Lois’s family remembers her they will recall how she enjoyed gardening, cooking and caring for others.

Her nephews will serve as pallbearers.
