Rev. Robert I. Brown

The Rev. Robert I. Brown, 71, of Beckley, died Tuesday, May 7, 2013.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 14, at Central Baptist Church. Friends may call from 5 to 6 p.m. Monday at Hilltop Baptist Center with celebration service beginning at 6 p.m. and from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at Central Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Maplewood Cemetery, Tazewell, Va.

PRINCETON — Juanita W. Dunn, 92, of Princeton, passed away Friday, May 10, 2013.

CW2 (Ret) Jerry R. Fink

CW2 (Ret) Jerry R. Fink passed away peacefully at his home in Crab Orchard, on Wednesday, May 8, 2013.

Born on June 17, 1940, the son of the late Garner and Margaret Acord Fink, he grew up in Glen White until he joined the Army in 1957. He was a member of the Glen White Baptist Church. He retired from the military with the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) at Ft. Campbell, Ky., in 1978 having served tours in Panama, Dominican Republic, two in Vietnam and Okinawa with the 7th Special Forces Group, 1st. Special Forces, and 173rd Airborne Brigade, Germany with the 3rd Cavalry 11th Armed Calvary Regiment and 130th Engineer Brigade, and at Ft. Bragg, N.C., with the 82nd Airborne Division. He was awarded numerous awards and decorations, the most notable being the Bronze Star, the Army Commendation Medal, the Air Medal, the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Republic of Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm Medal and the Meritorious Service Medal. He was wounded in action during his 1st tour in Vietnam. Upon his military retirement, Jerry began his second career as the General Manager of the Raleigh County Memorial Airport until his retirement from that position in 1997.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife and the love of his life of 54 years, Helen Greer Fink; his brother, Robert (Bobby) Fink and sister Linda Fink (and Willard) McGraw, all of Crab Orchard, his children, Cyndi Fink Tillinghast of Crab Orchard, Michael (and Devona) Fink of Columbia, S.C., Sherry (and Barry) Barajas of Beckley, and Jerry Lee (and Melissa) Fink of San Antonio, Texas; 10 grandchildren, Tyler (and Tabetha) Fink, Christopher Fink, Hannah Fink, Samantha (and Joe) Chapman, Savannah Barajas, Shannon Barajas, Candace Meadows, LaDawn (and Wesley) Hill, Heather (and Nick) Crissman, and Steven Fink; five great-grandchildren, Hunter, Haylee, Aubree, Tyson, and Tucker; and his best friend of 57 years, Johnny Richards of Glen White.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel in Beckley on Sunday, May 12, 2013, at 2 p.m., with Pastors Kenneth Parent and Roger Pauley officiating. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens at Prosperity. Military graveside rites will be conducted by the American Legion Post No. 32 Honor Guard.

The visitation will be on Saturday from 6 to 9 p.m., at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Michael Fink, USAF (Ret) Tech. Sgt. Jerry Lee Fink, Christopher Fink, U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Tyler Fink, Joe Chapman, and Barry Barajas. Honorary pallbearers will be Steven Fink, USAF (Ret.) Master Sgt. Steve McGraw, Greg McGraw, Willard (Coon) McGraw, Nick Crissman, and Johnny Richards.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Heart Association in Jerry’s name.

Edna Garnette Cook Hatfield

TURKEY CREEK — Edna Garnette Cook Hatfield, 83, of Turkey Creek, went to be with her Lord and Savior Thursday, May 9, 2013, at the Wyoming County Nursing and Rehab Center, New Richmond.

Born February 2, 1930, at Turkey Creek, she was the daughter of the late Joseph Goff Cook and Emily Vida Cook of Turkey Creek.

Mrs. Hatfield was a devoted and lifelong member of the Turkey Creek Missionary Baptist Church. She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend to all. Her hobbies and life’s enjoyment came from gardening, canning, and going for walks with “the girls.”

Her favorite Bible passage was Isaiah 40:31 — “But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.” We know now that her strength has been renewed and she has mounted up as an eagle with her Lord.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 33 years, Rush Hatfield; four brothers, Joseph G. Cook Jr., Noel V. Cook, Algie B. Cook and Roscoe Cook; three sisters, Naomi Wiles, Ruth McKinney and Gladys Cook.

Survivors include two sons, Daniel L. Hatfield and his wife, Linda, of Turkey Creek and  Michael R. Hatfield and his wife, Rhonda, of Turkey Creek; a daughter, Rhonda C. Paugh and her husband, Jerry, of Keyrock Road; eight grandchildren, Christopher M. Hatfield of Turkey Creek, Angela L. Jarrell of Beckley, Melissa S. Tackett of Charleston, Tracy N. Bledsoe of Pineville, Samantha K. Hatfield of Turkey Creek, Stephanie R. Henderson of Fairmont, Shana R. White of Pineville and Nicholas R. Paugh of Keyrock; 10 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Myrtle Cline, Grace Cook, Audie Bottomlee and her husband, J.P.; three sisters-in-law, Vennie Hatfield, Lorene Hatfield and Ruth Hatfield.

She is also survived by a large host of nieces and nephews.

A celebration of Garnette’s life will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, May 12, 2013, at the Turkey Creek Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Glenn Hatfield officiating. Burial will follow in Palm Memorial Gardens, Matheny.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday, May 11, 2013, at the funeral home.

The honor of being pallbearers will be given to family and friends.

SUMMERSVILLE — Mertie Lenora Jackson, 75, of Summersville, passed away Thursday, May 9, 2013.

Melvin Eugene ‘Melvie’ Lewis

LESTER — Melvin Eugene “Melvie” Lewis, 43, of Lester, passed away Monday, May 6, 2013, at Raleigh General Hospital, Beckley.

Born on Nov. 25, 1969, at Beckley, he was the son of Mildred Treadway Lewis of Lester and the late Melvin Cargyle Lewis.

Melvie loved video games, watching TV, and reading. He had attended NIT at Cross Lanes. Previously he had worked at Kroger’s, Montgomery Ward, John W. Eye, and in the warehouse at Sears.

His father, Melvin C. Lewis, preceded him in death.

Left to cherish his memory include his mother, Mildred Treadway Lewis of Lester; three sisters, Joyce (Kenneth) Carpenter, Donna Coughlin, and Patricia (Frank) Mason, all of Lester; two nieces, April (Greg) Mitchem and Kymber Mason; and five nephews, Michael, Zachary, and Daniel Carpenter, Ronnie Allen, and Tyler Mason.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, May 10, 2013, at his residence, 370 Sunburst Lane, Lester, WV 25865, with Rev. Brian McCallister officiating. Burial will follow at the Lewis Family Cemetery there at the home place.

Joyce V. Traynham Willis

WHIPPLE — Mrs. Joyce V. Traynham Willis, 81, of Whipple, passed away Monday, May 6, 2013, at Plateau Medical Center, after a short illness.

Born April 24, 1932, at Red Star, she was the daughter of the late William Traynham and Beatrice Leftwich.

Mrs. Willis was a member of Pleasant Valley Baptist Church and a retired home care provider.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Walter Willis; a son Norman Traynham; two brothers: Willie and Eugene Traynham; and sister, Josette Traynham.

She is survived by her son Nubert Traynham of Whipple; four brothers, Richard Traynham of New Rochelle, NY; Robert Traynham and Kenneth Traynham both of Boston, MA; John Traynham of Charlotte, NC; a granddaughter, Keisha Traynham of Boston, MA; nephews, nieces, cousins, relatives and friends.

Funeral Services will be 1 p.m. Monday, May 13, 2013, at Pleasant Valley Baptist Church, Carlisle, with Rev. Charles Brown officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Memorial Park, Beckley.
