Stephen Glen Bailey

PETERSTOWN — Stephen Glen Bailey, 23, of Peterstown, formerly of Glen Fork, passed away Tuesday, August 27, 2013, at Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

David D. Brumfield

GLEN FORK — David D. Brumfield, 57, passed away Tuesday, August 27, 2013, at Raleigh General Hospital after a long illness.

David was born January 5, 1956 to James and Faye Brumfield of Skin Fork. 

David was saved when he was a small child and always felt the Lord with him throughout his entire life and strived to do his best for the Lord and for others. David was an avid fisherman and loved being in the woods with his dog, Logan, who passed in 2011. He also loved visiting with his buddies.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, James Brumfield. 

David is survived by his wife of 33 years, Pamela Francis-Brumfield and his little dog, Sammi. Survivors also include two brothers, Donald of Turkey Dip and Dallas of Skin Fork and three sisters, Peggy and husband, Johnny of Wolf Pen, Shelia of Skin Fork and Charlotte (“Charlie”) and husband, Mike of Ohio. He is also survived by his special mother-in-law, Loretta Francis of Glen Fork; four brothers-in-law, Coy of Glen Fork, Kevin and wife, Nina of Glen Fork, Tim and wife, Kim of Charleston and Keith and wife, Lois of Buchannon; and three sisters-in-law, Darlene and husband, Randall, Linda and husband, Joe and Angie and husband, Tommy all of Glen Fork. Nieces and nephews include: Matt, Shawna, Nathan, Josh, Jared, Benji, Dana, Domini, Joy, Amber, Ashley, Millie, Caleb, Chad, Shelley, Brittany, Zach, Cassie, Ethan, Garrett, Kayla, Kori, Michael, Glenna, Jennifer, Faith and several very special great nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held 1 p.m., Friday, August 30, 2013, at Glen Fork Community Cemetery with Kevin and Keith Francis officiating.

Layla J. Graham 

Layla Joyce Graham, 65, of Basin, passed away on Tuesday, August 27, 2013 at Woltz Hospice Home, Dobson, N.C. following a long illness.

Mildred Louise Hicks

Mildred Louise Hicks entered the gates of Heaven on the morning of August 26th, 2013, following a long illness.

She was born Mildred Louise Carte in Gamoca, W.Va., Fayette County on May 18, 1931, to the late Clowney H. Carte and Ruby B. Puckett. Mildred has lived most of her life as a resident of Crab Orchard, Raleigh County. Her husband, Frank A. Hicks whom she married on July 16th, 1962, in Elton, Maryland, preceded her in death on January 14th, 1970.

Mildred was a homemaker and devoted Mother to her children. She was employed at Nina’s Market in Crab Orchard from 1952 to 1973 as a Store Clerk and Cashier. During this time she also conducted a self-employed bakery business, specializing in wedding cakes, birthday cakes and creations of her own unique designs and recipes.

She was a life time member of Bethel Freewill Baptist Church in MacArthur, W.Va. and a member of the Women’s Auxiliary, a member of the Marine Corps League, Chapter WV 1059 Fayette County Detachment serving as Chaplin and was awarded four distinguished National Chaplin Awards during her tenure.

She loved her church activities, home decorating (especially Christmas), antique collecting and various other crafts.

In addition to her husband Frank, she is preceded in death by her son, Danny Wayne Richardson. Mildred was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Two brothers, Adam Riley and Harold Hubert Carte, seven sisters: Hildred Lucille Carte Thompson, Mabel Elizabeth Carte Acord, Freda Elouise Carte Gillespie, Mary Rose Carte, Marion Carte, Wanda June Carte and Delma Jane Carte Wooten. 

Left to love and cherish her memory are two sons:  Dwayne Franklin Hicks and Ronald Lee Hicks. Three daughters: Lois Jane Vargo (Mike), Marcia Kay Carpenter, (Dale) and Myra Louise Craft. 

Also included are two very special nieces and loving care givers, Kathy Wooten and Sue Dixon, and two special people (like sons to her) Jeff Stanley and Dennis Barker. Several grandchildren, nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends. Other dear friends: Sue Richardson, Nancy G. Cook, Betty C. Basham, Mary R. Sisk, Norma J. Bibb, Ava McKinney, Sue Daniels, Peggy Bolt and JoAnn Bolen Behnseldt.

A special thank you to the staff of Hospice of Southern WV for their kind and compassionate care provide to our Mother a her end of life.

Funeral services will be Friday, August 30th, at 1 p.m.  in the Bethel Freewill Baptist Church at MacArthur. The Rev.’s Terry Hatcher and L. C. Calhoun will be officiating. Burial will follow in the Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens at Prosperity.

Pallbearers will be: Bill Acord, Sonny Boninsegna, Chris Burnside, Robert Hilton, Gregory Withrow and Hal Withrow.

Honorary pallbearers will be David Gillespie and Randy Wooten.

The family will receive friends at the church on Thursday evening from 6 to 9 p.m. and one hour prior to the services on Friday.

Robert E. Jones

CAMDEN, N.C. — Robert Eugene Jones, 79, of 120 Taylor’s Lane, Camden, died Tuesday, August 27, 2013, at the Albemarle Hospital. A native of Fayette County, W.Va., he was the son of the late Robert Jones and Gladys Dodd Jones and the widower of Barbara Jean Jones.

He served in the U.S. Navy and the U. S. Coast Guard as an Electronics Technician. He was an independent insurance salesman and a member of the CPOA Club.

He is survived by three sons, Wayne Jones and wife Sandra and Scott Jones and wife Linda all of Camden, N.C. and Gene Jones of Elizabeth City, N.C.; three grandchildren, Bobby Jones and wife Danielle, Lauren Jones and fiancé J. T. Copeland, and Tawny Jones; and one great grand daughter, Kaiden Lowe.

Funeral services will be Friday, August 30, 2013, at 11 a.m. at Twiford Memorial Chapel with the Rev. David Moehring officiating. Burial will follow in West Lawn Cemetery with Military Honors rendered by the William Clarence Jackson VFW Post No. 6060. The family will receive friends Thursday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. and at other times at the residence of the son, Scott Jones, 123 Pine Street, Camden, N.C.

SUMMERSVILLE — Savannah Rae-Brooke McKinney, 25, of Summersville, passed away Tuesday, August 27, 2013.

James Dean Perry

SYLVESTER — James Dean Perry, 64, of Sylvester, peacefully left this world on Monday, August 26, 2013, surrounded by his loving family at Hubbard Hospice House, after a long and courageous 6-year battle with cancer.

Dean was born on September 23, 1948, in Cabin Creek, W.Va. He was a U.S. Army Sergeant In the Vietnam War and was Honorably Discharged.

He was preceded in death by his father Ernest Perry Jr.; mother, Kathleen Pack Perry, brother, Robert “Buddy” Perry, sister, Judy Butler and his grandson, James “Jamie” Perry III whom he couldn’t wait to meet.

  He is survived by his loving wife, Belva of Sylvester, a son, James “Jimmy” Perry Jr. and Ally of Fairdale, daughters, Lyndsey and Sydney, both of Sylvester, granddaughter, Mandi of Arnett, granddaughter, Toni of Arnett and grandson Kaden of Sylvester; brothers, Jackie “Becky” of Parkersburg and Ricky “Sandy” of Charleston, sisters, Sandy “David” of Cross Lanes, Shara “J.L.” of Dorothy, Donna “Joey” of Ameagle and Vicki of Leevale, sister-in-law, Lois of Charleston, father-in-law, William Skeens, mother-in-law, Linda Skeens both of Seng Creek, brother-in-law, William Skeens Jr. “Linda” of Beckley; 18 nieces and nephews, 30 great nieces and nephews and one  great great nephew, the children and grandchildren were his life.

The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to all of the doctors involved in Dean’s care, especially Dr. Heather Tarantino. In Dean’s words “If there was ever an angel on earth it was Dr. Tarantino.

LONG BOTTOM, Ohio — Ester Louise Pitzer, 78, of Long Bottom, Ohio, a native of Beckley, passed away Tuesday, August 27, 2013.

Joni M. Shetler

GAP MILLS — Joni M. Shetler, age 79 years, three months, of Gap Mills, W.Va., went home to Glory on Tuesday, Aug. 27, 2013, at 2:10 a.m., unexpectedly at the home of his daughter, Rachel and Mark Stoltzfus of St. Thomas, Pa.

Joni was born on May 27, 1934, in Apple Creek, Ohio, son of the late Moses M. and Mary J. Miller Shetler and Barbara J. Miller Shetler.

He was senior bishop of Gap Mills Christian Fellowship. He was ordained a minister June 2, 1968, and as bishop May 10, 1970, at Mission Home, Va.

In 1977 he moved to Gap Mills, where he helped establish the church. He was also instrumental in establishing churches in the US and foreign missions. Joni and his wife, Anna served in missions in Honduras and Central America. He faithfully served  His Lord in service to his church. Joni was a farmer and carpenter all his life and in his retirement years enjoyed many hours in his woodworking shop. He loved spending time with his children, twenty-six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Surviving are four sons, James (Janet Nisly) Shetler of Hutchinson, Kan., Jason (Jeanette Grove-Heline) Shetler of Navarre, Ohio, Jadon (Charlene Rutter) Shetler of Phoenix, Ariz., Jesse (Marianne Petre) Shetler of Gap Mills, W.Va. and four daughters, Arlene and (Jerry) Miller of Freidens, Pa., Leona and (Alvin Stoltzfus) of Romney, W.Va., Rachel and (Mark) Stoltzfus of St. Thomas, Pa. and Naomi Shetler of Gap Mills, who lovingly cared for her Dad at the home; four brothers, Lewis (Marilyn) Shetler of Millersburg, Ohio, Levi (Amanda) Shetler of Holmesville, Ohio, Eli (Fannie) Shetler of Apple Creek, Ohio, Norman (Carole) Shetler of Mt. Eaton, Ohio; five sisters, Elizabeth Petersheim and Martha (Ernest) Schrock, both of Oakland, Md., Ada Swartzentruber, Mary Shetler and Ella Shetler, all of Apple Creek, Ohio; one sister-in-law, Rachel Shetler of Farmville, Va.; one aunt, Barbara Miller of Brown City, Mich.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Anna, with whom he lived 55 happy years, a daughter, Elmina May Shetler, his parents; a sister, Emma Shetler and a brother, Uria Shetler.

Calling hours are form 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 30, 2013, at Groves Funeral Home, 715 Sweet Springs Road, Union, WV 24983 and 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 31, 2013, at Gap Mills Mennonite Christine Fellowship, Gap Mills, W.Va.

Services are 10 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 1, 2013, at Gap Mills Mennonite Christian Fellowship, Gap Mills, with Pastors William Beiler and Tim Miller officiating. Interment is at Gap Mills Mennonite Christian Fellowship Cemetery.

Ronald Ray ‘Rondal’ Shifflett

Ronald Ray “Rondal” Shifflett, formerly of Oak Hill, died Wednesday, July 17, 2013, at his home in Cornell, Wis.

Born in Kingston, W.Va., on July 24, 1940, he was the son of the late Raymond and Thelma (Coleman) Shifflett.

After attending school in Oak Hill, Ron enlisted in the U.S. Navy when he was 19. He spent time on the west coast, overseas and then was stationed at Patauxent River, Md. While on the skydiving team he met and married Carol Staudacher. They later divorced.

Ron enrolled in the West Virginia State Police Academy in 1968. Throughout his career with the State Police he spent time with the drug task force and working different cases as an undercover agent. The stories that Ron would tell and the accomplishments throughout his career show the pride he took in his work.

In 2006 he moved to Wisconsin to live with his daughter due to Alzheimer’s. To the very end, Ron never lost a certain personality trait: you never knew what kind of prank Ron was going to pull.

Surviving are his daughters, Karen (Joel) Craker of Luck, Wis., and Donna Shifflett (Bob Kendall) of Cornell, Wis.; sister, Nancy Plunkett of Slaughterville, Okla.; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild as well aunts, uncles, niece, nephews, his ex-wife and numerous other family members.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, August 30, 2013 at Tyree Funeral Home, Oak Hill, with Chaplan Jim Mitchell of the WV State Police officiating. Friends may call two hours prior to the service on Friday at the funeral home. Cremains will be interred at High Lawn Memorial Park in Oak Hill with military graveside rites by Oak Hill VFW Post #3110.

Clyde “Dale” Sizemore, passed away Monday, Aug. 26, 2013.

Barbara Gail Smith

OAK HILL — Barbara Gail Smith, 75, of Oak Hill, died on Sunday, March 10, 2013, at Plateau Medical Center in Oak Hill.

Born August 16, 1937, at Beckley, she was the daughter of the late Roby Grant and Gola Myrtle McLain Smith.

A longtime resident of Twin Oaks Apartments in Oak Hill, Barbara Gail was a member of the Oak Hill Gospel Tabernacle. 

Her brothers, Mack H. Smith and Gerald Steven Smith and sister-in-law, Ruth Nester Smith preceded her in death.

Survivors include niece, Teresa Black and husband, Roger; nephew, Mark Smith, sister-in-law, Starlette Nester Smith and several cousins.

Graveside rites and committal services will be on Saturday, August 31, 2013, at 2 p.m. at High Lawn Memorial Park in Oak Hill. Burial will follow.
