Amy Arnold

HINTON — Amy Arnold, 89, passed away Saturday, Aug. 17, 2013.

Arrangements are incomplete at the Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors in Hinton.

Harold E. ‘Doc’ Bostic

GREENVILLE — Harold E. “Doc” Bostic, 89, of Greenville, WV, passed away Saturday, August 17, 2013, at Princeton Community Hospital following a sudden illness. 

He was born at Rock Camp, WV, January 12, 1924, a son of the late James Homer and Myrtle Ann Copeland Bostic.

Mr. Bostic was a farmer and he also worked at the Ronceverte, Alderson, Caldwell and Narrows Livestock Markets for over 60 years, a member of the Rock Camp Baptist Church and the Monroe Cattleman’s Association.

Surviving are his wife of 60 years, Virginia Mann Bostic of Greenville; 5 children, Marry Ann Smith and husband, Charlie, of Baton Rouge, LA, Sue Burns and husband, Craig, of Mt. Clare, Bobby Bostic and wife, Leressa, of Union, Jim Bostic of Buckhannon, Dwight L. Bostic and wife, Sue, of Austin, TX, 7 grandchildren, Suzanne Wilson and husband, Lenny, Michael Burns and wife, Becky, Adam and Katherine Smith, Jessica Yates and husband, Cory, Sarah and Emily Bostic; 3 great-grandchildren, Brooklyn and Blake Wilson, Jackson Burns.

Funeral Services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, August 20, 2013, at the Groves Funeral Home Chapel in Union with Pastor Paul Broyles and Rev. Eugene Fullen officiating. Burial will follow in the Ellison Cemetery at Dropping Lick.

Friends may call at the Groves Funeral Home in Union from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, August 19, 2013.

Howard E. Crawford

BIG CREEK — Howard E. Crawford, 92, of Big Creek passed away Saturday, August 17, 2013, at Summers Nursing and Rehab following a long illness.

Born July 25, 1921, at Summers County, he was a son of the late Homer R. and Lillian Martin Crawford.

A World War II Veteran having served his country in the United States Army with 863 Antiaircraft Artillery Automatic Weapons Battalion in Europe, retired from the CSX Railroad after many years of service, loved hunting and raising a big garden every year as long as health permitted.

Preceded in death by two brothers, Herbert and Hubert Crawford, and three sisters, Louise Adkins, Viola Crawford and Lacy Humphries.

Survived by his son, Gary “Jackie” Crawford and wife Loretta of Radford, VA; one grandson, Gary Crawford Jr. and wife Lori of Spindale, NC; one great-granddaughter, Tera Crawford of Spindale, NC; one brother, Bobby Crawford of Baltimore, MD; one sister, Gladys Lilly of Charleston, SC; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, August 20, 2013, at the Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors Chapel with Pastor Lynn Maddy officiating. Burial will follow in the Crawford Cemetery at Big Creek.

Friends may call from noon until service time on Tuesday at the funeral parlors.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Cheryl ‘China’ Lynn Griffith

GLEN ROGERS — Cheryl “China” Lynn Griffith, 43, passed away Friday, August 16, 2013, at Raleigh General Hospital.

Born May 8, 1970, in Mullens, WV, she was the daughter of the late Ross and Shirley Douglas Lafferty.

China enjoyed gardening, spending time with her friends and family and cookouts; she also loved watching her husband, Michael, race. She was of the Baptist faith. China was proud to be an organ donor.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Eugene.

Those left to cherish her memory are her husband, Michael Griffith; a daughter, Cecilie Griffith of Glen Rogers; a sister, Annette Tilley and husband, Joseph, of Glen Rogers; a brother, Mark Lafferty and wife, Juanita, of Cowen; four half siblings, Randy Lafferty, Mike Lafferty, Ricky Lafferty and Debbie Hardin; several nieces and nephews; and a host of friends.

Friends may join the family for a celebration of China’s life 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, August 20, 2013, at Evans Funeral Home Memorial Chapel.

Margaret Alpha Sweeney Hutchinson

Margaret Alpha Sweeney Hutchinson, age 96, of Beckley, passed away Friday, August 16, at Bowers Hospice House.

She was born January 4, 1917, at Sun, West Virginia, to the late parents of Roy Lee Sweeney and Mary Ballard Sweeney. She was previously from Skelton before moving to Beckley in 1968.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl J. Hutchinson, two sisters — Juanita Eaton from Dayton, Ohio, and Marie Brown from Sprague, one grandson — Michael Williams. Stepchildren: Earl Jr., Tommy, William, Hal, and Judith Dew.

She is survived by her children: Patrick and Janet Williams of Springfield, Ohio; Nancy and Pat Coutcher of Wagram, North Carolina; Roy and Myrt Hutchinson of Arcanum, Ohio; Earl Wayne and Patricia Hutchinson of Marion, North Carolina; and Dwight of Beckley. She is also survived by a special and blessed friend, Ann Miles of Beaver, Molly, her feline companion, and LuLu, her canine friend.

She is also survived by grandchildren — Cheryl, Tammy, Patrick, Robert, Susan, David, Duane, Laurie, Robin, Hutchie, Lisa; Lauren, and Lindsay, and one sister — Clara Bowden of Prosperity.

Visitation will be at Calfee Funeral Home in Beckley, WV, on Monday, August 19, 2013, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Graveside rites and burial will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, August 20, 2013, at Mt. Tabor Cemetery, with Pastor Vondie Cook II officiating.

Because of her love of animals, memorial contributions may be made to the Humane Society of Raleigh County, 325 Grey Flats Road, Beckley, WV.

Monta Jean Nutter

HOMINY FALLS — Monta Jean Nutter, 83, of Hominy Falls, WV, passed away early Saturday morning, August 17, 2013, at CAMC in Charleston, West Virginia, following a short illness.

Born April 20, 1930, at Bergoo, WV, she was a daughter of the late Raymond and Lena O’Dell Davis.

Monta Jean was a member of the Penile United Methodist Church of Hominy Falls, and a homemaker.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Francis F. “Bob” Nutter, in 2002.

Those left to cherish her memory are her daughter: Sue Nutter Amick (Fred) of Leivasy, WV; 1 son: Robert “Bob” Nutter of Hominy Falls, WV; 1 sister: Bonnie Mace of Hominy Falls, WV; 3 brothers: Bobby Joe Davis of Warren, Ohio, Harry Davis of Quinwood, WV, Tommy Davis of Quinwood, WV; 2 grandchildren: Amanda Carpenter of Craigsville, WV, and Phillip Amick of Logan, WV; 4 great-grandchildren: Aidan, Alyssa, Addyson, and Austin.

Services will be at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, August 20, 2013, at the Wallace & Wallace Chapel in Rainelle, with Rev. Harold Duskey officiating. Burial will follow at End of the Trail Cemetery, Clintonville.

Friends may call 2 hours prior to the funeral (noon to 2 p.m.) at the funeral home. There will be no evening visitation.
