Fred L. Blackburn

Fred L. Blackburn of Beckley passed away Thursday, March 18, 2010, in the VA Hospital.

Mr. Blackburn was the son of the late Charlie and Lester Johnson Blackburn. He was born March 30, 1924, at Mill Creek, W.Va.

Fred was a World War II Veteran with the United States Army.

He was the former owner of Blackburn Chevrolet, Jeep in Hinton; President of Blackburn Motors Inc. in Bradley and Beckley. He was a Broker for Blackburn Patterson Realty Co.; an Appraiser for the State Right of Way Dept.; State Liquor Control Commission. He was also President of the Bradley Lions Club.

He was dedicated to his family; Fred loved walking on the beach, working, and car auctions.

Survivors include his wife Launia Sweeney Blackburn of Beckley; a son, Freddie Blackburn Jr. and his wife, Helen, of Beckley; three brothers, Charles F. Blackburn and wife, Marty, of Colonial Beach, Va., Earney Blackburn and wife Joyce of Greencove, Va., and Skip Blackburn also of Greencove, Va.; one grandson, Jeff Blackburn and wife, Alicia, of Beaver; two great-grandchildren, Cody and Kailee Blackburn of Beaver.

Services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 21, 2010, at Blue Ridge Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Bill Parker officiating. Graveside Military Rites will be conducted by the American Legion Post # 32 Honor Guard of Beckley. Entombment will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Friends may gather with the family 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday, March 21, 2010, at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers donations may be sent to the Alzheimer’s Association West Virginia Chapter at 111 Lee Street, East, Charleston, WV 25301.

Lester Junior Chandler

PETERSTOWN — Lester Junior Chandler, 91, died Friday, March 19, 2010.

Services will be 2 p.m. Sunday, March 21, at the Broyles-Shrewsbury Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Otuce Huffman Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in the Peterstown Cemetery, Rich Creek, Va. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today, March 20, at the funeral home.

GILBERT — Gregory Pearlie Cline, 55, died Thursday, March 18, 2010.

Mary Allcock Doman

Mary Allcock Doman, 95, of Beckley, formerly of Wheeling, died Wednesday, March 17, 2010, at the Bowers Hospice House in Beckley.

She was born January 23, 1915, in Zanesville, Ohio, daughter of the late William John Mosley and Louise Jane Hill Allcock and moved to Wheeling, at the age of 6.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Otto Reed Doman, in January 1968.

Mrs. Doman graduated from the former Triadelphia High School and from West Liberty State College, and received her Master’s in Elementary Education from West Virginia University. She taught at Bridge Street School for 41 years, having retired in 1975. She was a member of St. Mark Evangelical Lutheran Church for over 60 years, where she was a member of the Sanctuary Choir for over 50 years, taught Sunday School, and was an Elder of the church. She was a Girl Scout leader and camp counselor. She was a member of the AARP; OCARSE; the Thursday Music Club; Women’s Club of Wheeling; Delta Kappa Gamma Society; AAUW; and the Women’s Collegiate Alumni Association. She was an active volunteer for Meals On Wheels for many years.

Surviving are a son, Daniel R. Doman and his wife, Rebecca, of Beckley; a daughter, Joy Fox and her husband, Pete, of Triadelphia; a sister, Betty Taylor and her husband, Kenneth, of Bethesda, Md.; three granddaughters, Sandra Fox Keller and her husband, Grant, Renee Fox Norred and her husband, Martin, and Sally Doman Woodard and her husband, Brent; and three great-grandchildren, Tyler and Hunter Keller and Tristan Woodard.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, March 22, 2010, at the Kepner Funeral Home, 166 Kruger Street, Elm Grove, Wheeling. Services will be held at St. Mark Evangelical Lutheran Church, 141 Kruger Street, Elm Grove, on Tuesday, March 23, 2010, at 2 p.m. with the Reverend R. Paul Schafer officiating. Interment in Greenwood Cemetery, Wheeling.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mark Evangelical Lutheran Church.

Donald Michael Glessner

Donald Michael Glessner, age 75, of Shady Spring, died Thursday, March 18, 2010, at the Raleigh General Hospital in Beckley, following a long illness.

Born on February 5, 1935, in Pennsylvania, he was the son of the late Michael Glessner and Irene Rudolph Glessner.

Don was retired as an engineer and an experimental mechanic from General Motors Corporation after 32 years of service in Ohio and Michigan. He was of the Catholic faith. Don was a U.S. Army Veteran of the Korean Conflict.

He will be sadly missed by his wife of 35 years, Dola Radford Glessner; a daughter, Deborah Glessner Moreck and her husband Michael of Hiram, Ohio; one stepdaughter, Gloria Jean Houk of Orlando, Fla.; two brothers, Charles Glessner and Clyde Glessner, both of Pennsylvania; two grandsons, Jason Glessner of Ohio and Derek Houk of Florida; sisters-in-law, Rosalie Radford Lilly of Daniels, and Gail Radford Richmond of Daniels.

The family would like to extend special thanks to Richard and Mary Ann Miser for their kindness and help.

A rite of committal will be held at Sunset Memorial Park in Beckley, on Monday, March 22, 2010, at 1 p.m. with Rev. Mr. Don Wise officiating.

Friends may call from 10:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. on Monday at the Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home in Beckley.

Pallbearers will be family members and friends.

Opal Vealey Miller

DREWS CREEK — Opal Vealey Miller of Drews Creek went home to be with the Lord, whom she served for 59 years, on Thursday, March 18, 2010, at the CAMC General Division Hospital, Charleston, W.Va.

She was born July 3, 1926, at Pine Knob, W.Va., a daughter of the late Hubert and Merlie Gunnoe Vealey.

She graduated from Marsh Fork High School; after completing four years at Concord College she became a Raleigh County School teacher with 38 years of service.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Reathel Jarrell.

She is survived by her husband, Byrd Miller whom she married on November 1, 1947; a daughter, Byrdena Shepherd and husband, Matthew, of Clemons, N.C.; two sons, Wayne Miller and wife, Carolyn, of Dry Creek, W.Va., and Ronald Miller and wife, Nancy, of Naoma, W.Va.; a sister, Erna Howell and husband, Denver, of N. Wilkesboro, N.C.; two brothers, Clinton Vealey and wife, Janet, of Naoma and Keith Vealey of wife, Patricia, of Solon, Ohio; six grandchildren, three great-grandchildren.

Services will be 12 noon Sunday, March 21, 2010, in the Union Chapel at Drews Creek, with the Revs. David Cook and Danny Gilfilen officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park, Beckley.

Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. today at the Armstrong Funeral Home, Whitesville.

Glenna Irene Nutter

RUNA — Glenna Irene Nutter, 81, of Nicholas County, died Friday, March 19, 2010.

Service will be 2 p.m. Monday, March 22, in the White Funeral Home, Summersville, with Pastor Mike Loudermilk officiating. Interment will follow in the Pleasant Hill Church Cemetery at Runa. Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Elizabeth ‘Liz’ Stoots

Elizabeth “Liz” Stoots of Eccles moved on from this life on Wednesday, March 17, 2010. She was 24 years old and had fought a long, courageous battle with a neuromuscular disease.

Born December 2, 1985, in Valdosta, Ga., Elizabeth was the oldest daughter of Kathy Stoots of Eccles, and the late Jamie Stoots.

Elizabeth was a 2004 graduate of Liberty High School. She was devoted to her family and friends, and loved spending time with her cats and dogs. She loved to read, watch movies, and listen to music, as well as creative writing, and cooking.

Liz was preceded in death by not only her father, but by her paternal grandmother, maternal grandparents, and several infant nephews.

Liz leaves behind a horde of people who will always love her including her mother, Kathy; sister, Becky; maternal aunt, Diane Smith; paternal aunt, Sharon Arthur; dearest friends, Amanda Jolliffe, Amelia Len, Dolly Bradley, and the little angel of her heart, Novella. There are so many more family and friends who also love and miss her.

Per Liz’s wishes, there will be no services.

DORCHESTER, Mass. — Eugene Edward Traynham, 71, formerly of Whipple, died March 16, 2010.
