LAURELVILLE, Ohio — The family of Calvin A. Akers of Laurelville, Ohio, is having a memorial service at 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 3, 2012, at the Holiday Inn Express, 23911 U.S. Rt. 23, Circleville, OH 43113. Robert J. Arthur

Robert J. Arthur, age 79, of Beckley, passed away on Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2012, at Plateau Medical Center.

He was born on Dec. 31, 1932, in Mingo County.

Robert is survived by three daughters, one son, and five grandchildren.

He is also survived by his stepchildren, Johnna Moye, Valerie Moye, and Jimmy Morgan, a mother-in-law; ten brothers and sisters-in-law. A host of nieces and nephews.

Predeceased in death by his wife Vickie, and father-in-law James Richardson.

A special Thank you to Mary Richardson, Lottie “Suzie” Poore, Carol Richardson and Larry Richardson, George Richardson, Renee Richardson, and Vera Rader.

In keeping with his wishes he has been cremated, and there will be no services.

Karen Ann Barley

MAPLE FORK — Karen Ann Barley, 71, of Maple Fork, passed away Friday, October 26, 2012, in Fairfax, VA.

Born August 8, 1941, in Omaha, NE, she was the daughter of the late William and Dorothy Baird Worthington.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel Ray Barley.

Karen was a member of the Mt. Hope Winolia Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star.

Survivors include her daughter, Stacy Riggs and her husband Rich of Lorton, VA; grandchildren, Austin and Madison Riggs; as well as numerous sisters and brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, November 3, 2012, in the Calfee Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Skee Barley officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. Friends may visit with the family from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Bobby Barley, Matt Barley, Jimmy Chapman, Johnny Dotson, Richard Lovell, and Mike Stratman.

CANVAS — Danny Clark “Chappie” Chapman, 58, of Canvas, died Friday, Oct. 26, 2012.

In keeping with his wishes the body was cremated. Bonnie Jean (Wiseman) Evans

RAINELLE — Bonnie Jean (Wiseman) Evans, 83, of Rainelle, West Virginia, passed away early Tuesday morning, October 30, 2012, at Wilson Memorial Hospital in Wilson, North Carolina, following a long illness.

Born November 11, 1928, at Rainelle, West Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Albert Charles and Kathleen Marcena Burns Wiseman.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Karel F. Evans, in 2004, brother, “Sonny” Wiseman; brother-in-law, Ray Turner; and nephew, Jerry Turner.

Bonnie graduated from Rainelle High School in 1946, and from Charleston School of Business in 1947. She worked 40 years as the Office Manager for Appalachian Power Company.

Bonnie was a member of Rainelle United Methodist Church, the Rainelle Garden Club, the Red Hat Society, and served on Friends of the Rainelle Public Library. She was deeply loved and treasured by her family and friends, and by everyone whose lives she brightened with her sweet smile and generosity. Bonnie was a very special lady.

Ruth A. Stokes Eye

Ruth A. Stokes Eye, 88, of Beckley went home to be with the Lord on Monday, October 29, 2012, following a short illness.

Ruth was born on August 30, 1924, in Harlan, Kentucky, the daughter of the late Andrew and Elsie Rose Stokes.

In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Harold Eye; three sisters, Evelyn Morrison, June Biggs and Thelma Prestridge; one brother, Herman Stokes, and two infant siblings, Hobert and Willie Jean Stokes.

Ruth was a member of First Baptist Church of Beckley, where she participated in First Place and mentored children in the after-school program. She was also a member of Senior Friends at Raleigh General Hospital. Ruth was a 60-year member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, Alpha Master Chapter, where she most recently achieved the highest degree of Torch Bearer.

During WWII she worked in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, on the top secret Manhattan Project, where she was employed as a Calutron girl at the Y-12 plant. She was retired from Sophia Electric.

Ruth was very active throughout most of her life and enjoyed participating in sports such as bowling, golfing, and swimming to name a few. She loved traveling, playing cards, and working crossword puzzles. She adored her grandchildren and enjoyed the time she spent with them.

Those left to cherish her memory include her son, Edward Eye and his wife, Anisha, of Beckley; grandchildren, Ethan Eye, Colten Prince and Ashlyn Prince all of Beckley; sister, Allene Carr of Cincinnati, OH; brother, Tommy Stokes of Tallahassee, FL; and many nieces and nephews including two special nieces, Cheri Herald of Cincinnati, OH, and Wanda Kelly of Venice, FL.

Memorial Service will be held on Friday, November 2, 2012, at 2 p.m. at Blue Ridge Funeral Home in Beckley, WV, with Pastor Donald “Doc” Adkins officiating. The Beta Sigma Phi Memorial Ritual will be read and burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends Friday, November 2, 2012, from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. at the funeral home.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

PINEVILLE — Thomas “Mack” Goode, 74, of Pineville, passed away Sunday, Oct. 28, 2012.

Due to weather conditions, a celebration of Mack’s life has been rescheduled for 1 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 1, at Calfee Funeral Service Chapel, Pineville, with the Rev. Jessie Dotson officiating. Roger ‘O-Ring’ Dean Humphrey

OAK HILL — Roger “O-Ring” Dean Humphrey, 62, of Oak Hill, WV, died on Sunday, October 28, 2012, at his home.

Born August 8, 1950, at Kilsyth, WV, he was the son of Doris Cumbow Humphrey of Oak Hill, WV, and the late Aubrey Humphrey.

He was an employee of Republic Energy at Kingston, an affiliate of Alpha Natural Resources.

Roger attended Gentry Missionary Baptist Church, Sanger.

Survivors include his wife of 40 years, Darlene Fay Berry Humphrey, one son, Bryan Humphrey of Oak Hill, one brother, Kevin Humphrey and wife, Toni, of York, SC, and three sisters, Connie Ellison and husband, Stan, of Beckley, Yvonne Boles and husband, Ivan, of Beckwith and Cheryl Bishop and husband, Gene, of Craigsville.

He is also survived by two grandchildren, Justin Humphrey and Madison Brooke Humphrey both of Oak Hill.

Funeral services will be on Friday, November 2, 2012, at 2 p.m. at Gentry Missionary Baptist Church in Sanger with Pastor Bill Drennen officiating. Burial will be at High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill. Friends may call one hour prior to the service on Friday at the church.

June Genevieve Jones

June Genevieve Jones, of Crab Orchard, died Monday, October 29, 2012, at her home, of natural causes. She was 88 years old.

June, the daughter of the late Clisby Theodore Kessinger and Chloe Alice DeJernette Kessinger, was born on December 3rd, 1923, in Beckley. June moved to Parkersburg, WV, at the age of six, after the death of her father.

At approximately the age of twenty, June and her mother moved to Detroit, MI, to work in the Defense Factories during World War II. After the illness and death of her mother, June moved back to Beckley where she met her husband, Bub. They were married on August 14, 1947. June was always by Bub’s side as they grew the family Business, Bub’s Cycle Center, into the success it is today. June and Bub also traveled the world over the course of their lives.

June lived a full and wonderful life where she always took great joy in the time she spent with others and brought joy to all around wherever she traveled. June was always around to help with the family motorcycle business and will always be remembered by friends and family stocking oil cans or sweeping up around the “Shop.” June was a member of the Senior Bowling League at Accu Lanes in Crab Orchard and enjoyed working outdoors in all seasons. June lived an active and full life up until her sudden and untimely death.

June is preceded in death by her husband, Haworth “Bub” Jones, and her four brothers, Robert F. Kessinger, William E. Kessinger, James B. Kessinger, and George E. Kessinger.

She is survived by her children, Amelia J. Chen and her husband Li Chen of Oak Hill, WV, and Haworth “Buster” Jones, II, and his wife Dina Jones of Crab Orchard, WV; her grandchildren George A. Metz, Jr., (married to Shawn Kim Metz) of Charleston, WV, Haworth “Alex” Jones, III, of Raleigh, NC, Gregory S. Jones of Washington D.C., and T. Aaron Metz (married to Jennifer L. Metz) of Morgantown, WV; great-grandchild Anthony E. Metz, of Charleston, WV.

Visitation and services will be held at Calfee Funeral Home on November 4, 2012. Visitation begins at 12:30 p.m. with funeral services to begin at 2 p.m. Burial will follow in the Calfee Cemetery at Mt. Tabor.

Stella C. ‘Betty’ Kennedy

BLOUNTVILLE, Tenn. — Stella C. “Betty” Kennedy, age 74, of Blountville, TN, passed away on October 30, 2012, at Holston Valley Medical Center.

She was born in Washington, PA, a daughter to the late Ernest and Stella Rowe Chapman, and had been a resident of Bristol for around eight years.

Mrs. Chapman was a former nurse in West Virginia and was a member of Island Road Freewill Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband Alvin Kennedy.

Survivors include: Children – Kathy Kennedy, Patrick Kennedy and wife Katina, Linda Coates and husband Joshua

Grandchildren – Frances Parmenter, Patty Coates, and Sarah Kennedy

Siblings – Ernest Chapman and wife Laura, Roberta Petro and husband Jim, Kathie Cook

Brother-in-law – Wayne Kennedy

Funeral services will be held on Friday, November 2, 2012, at 8 p.m. in the Weaver Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Scott Kain officiating.

Donald Ray Keyes Jr.

Donald Ray Keyes Jr. of Dorothy, WV, passed away on Tuesday, October 30, 2012, at the CAMC Memorial Division Hospital, Charleston, WV.

He was born December 9, 1958, at Charleston, WV, a son of the late Donald Ray Keyes Sr. and Louise Jones Keyes of Dorothy.

In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by a grandson, Tyler Evans.

Those left to cherish his memory include his mother, Louise Jones Keyes of Dorothy; daughters Christine Foster and husband, Joe, Sherri Bowman and husband, Marky, a son, Michael Keyes; sisters, Vickie Bratcher and husband, Craig, and nephew, Nick and Ashley Bratcher, Peggy Massey Landers and husband, Jim, and nephews, Ben Massey and Erik Massey; grandchildren, Zachary Bowman, Maygen Harless, Kristopher Bowman, Calee Harless, Alexis Bowman and Nick Foster.

Donald had many friends and had requested that we all remember him for who he was in life.

James William ‘Jimmy’ Moye

James William “Jimmy” Moye, age 72, of Shady Spring, WV, passed away on Sunday, October 28, 2012, at the Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital in Beckley, WV.

Born on March 11, 1940, in Beckley, he was the son of the late Edward Moye and Bridgie Elliott Moye.  

Mr. Moye was a retired coal miner, and a member of the UMWA. He was a member of the Fairview Freewill Baptist Church at Flat Top, and had served as a Sunday School Superintendent and Trustee of the church. Mr. Moye enjoyed antique cars. He was a U.S. Army Veteran.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers Robert G. Moye and Omar Thomas Moye, and a half brother, Bill Moye.

Those survivors left to cherish his memory include his wife of 50 years, Darlene Smith Moye, a brother Edward “Henry” Moye and his wife Carolyn of Grove City, Ohio, and nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of friends.

He also leaves behind many children from the church who referred to him as the “Candy Man.”

Funeral services will be conducted to Celebrate The Life Of Jimmy Moye on Saturday, November 3, 2012, at 1 p.m. at the Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home Shady Spring Chapel with Pastor Charles Tilley and Rev. Charles ‘Charlie’ William Plumley

Charles “Charlie” William Plumley, 88, of Shady Spring, passed away on Sunday, October 28, 2012, at Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital following an extended illness.

Born October 1, 1924, in Abraham, WV, to the late Tolley and Susie Plumley.

Charlie enjoyed mechanic work on automobiles. In his earlier years, he was an avid outdoorsman and loved to hunt. Charlie was a pleasant person to be around and he is going to be sadly missed by his family and friends.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by daughters, Katherine Plumley, Joyce Plumley, Louella Nutter, and Sandra Burnes; a son, Charles Daniel Plumley; a great-granddaughter, Danni Lynn Plumley; brothers Charles and Jackie Plumley; and sisters Rudell Weis, Garnet Weis, Myrtle Adkins, and Bertha Meadows.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 70 years, Mrs. Alma Plumley; son, William Andrew Plumley and wife Carol of Shady Spring; daughters, Ida Surratt and husband Floyd of Riverside, CA, Elizabeth Adkins and husband Grover of Shady Spring, and Janice Allison Hinton; brother, Marion Plumley of Beckley; grandsons, Dennis Plumley and wife Karen and their two sons Luke and Elijah of Shady Spring, and Leonard Plumley and wife Bonnie and their daughter Lindsey and her husband Matt and their son Landon of Bradley, whom Charlie thought of as his own sons; grandchildren, Linda, Michael, Carl, Alice, and Dan Plumley, Lisa, Anthony, and Eric Scott, Michelle, John, Andrew, Willy, and Joshua Plumley, Allen, Floyd, and Steven, Jennifer and Patrick Adkins, Christopher and Patricia Barnes, and Charles Daniel; also survived by numerous great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

A Service of Celebration will be conducted 1 p.m. Friday, November 2, 2012, at the Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Chapel in Beckley with Pastor Paul Chapman officiating. Interment will follow at Washington-Plumley Cemetery, Plumley Mountain.

William Lee Shepherd III

SCARBRO — William Lee Shepherd, III, 40, of Scarbro, WV, died on Saturday, October 27, 2012, at Plateau Medical Center in Oak Hill, WV, of a sudden illness.

Born January 29, 1972, at Oak Hill, WV, he was the son of William Lee Shepherd, Jr., of Oak Hill, WV, and Louise Kay Treadway Jeffries of Scarbro, WV, and stepson of Hazel Shepherd and Arnold Jeffries.

William, loving father, son and brother, will be sadly missed.

His grandparents, William Lee, Sr., and Ruby Shepherd and Ernest and Wanda Treadway, and a stepbrother, Russell “Rusty” Jeffries, preceded him in death.
