Jean Porter Gallaher Zutaut
Jean Porter Gallaher Zutaut, 89, passed away Thursday, Oct. 4, 2012, at Raleigh General Hospital of a short illness.
Born in Flat Top, WV, May 6, 1923, in the house that is now known as Mavis Manor, she was the daughter of the late James Lee and Patricia Lilly Porter. She was preceded in death by her 3 brothers, Maurice, Harold, and Robert (Bob) Porter. She was also preceded in death by her first husband, Dr. Gray Gallaher, a Beckley dentist, who passed away in 1986.
Jean graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in 1941, attended Beckley College and Concord College. She taught elementary school and later became a preschool teacher at First Christian Church Pre-School and the Montessori School at Beckley Presbyterian Church. A past member of the Raleigh County Dental Society and Beckley Art Group, she was a longtime member and actively involved at the First Christian Church, especially the Friendship Class and Circle Groups. She was also a member and past president of the Primrose Garden Club, winning many awards for her beautiful flower arrangements at flower shows, including a Best of Show award. Jean was a talented artist and enjoyed creating and working on paintings, arts and crafts and also tending to her yard and flower garden.
After the death of her beloved Gray, Jean moved to Boca Raton, FL, to be near her daughter Christy. There, Jean worked for a Podiatrist and at the City of Boca Raton Library. After marrying her second husband, Willis Zutaut, in 1995, she moved to Pleasant Ridge, Michigan, where she lived for the last 17 years. An avid reader, she also enjoyed music of all kinds, singing and playing the piano whenever she could. She loved all her family and kept up with and enjoyed hearing about all her grandchildren, nieces and nephews and cousins alike.
Survivors include her husband Willis Zutaut of Michigan, her loving daughters, Christy (Mike) Duane of Indiantown, FL, Jean (Mike) Nutting of Fraser, CO, and Leslie (Larry) Misiti of Beckley, WV; 9 grandchildren, Eliza Jean (EJ), Burgess Lee, Thomas Gray and Michael James Duane all of Florida, Amanda Leigh and Mallory Landis Nutting of Colorado and Michael Stephen, Phillip Lawrence and Catherine Tory Misiti of WV. Also surviving is sister-in-law Vesta Porter of Macon, GA, along with many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Always a giving person, Jean requested that her body be donated to the Human Gift Registry. Even in death, Jean is giving life to others through her contribution to the training of medical doctors.
There will be no funeral service, but per Jean’s request, a Memorial service and family gathering will take place at a later date. Donations of sympathy may be made to the Salvation Army or to the First Christian Church, 119 N. Fayette St., Beckley, WV.
