James Dillard ‘JD’ Banther Jr.

LYNCO — James Dillard “JD” Banther Jr., 74, of Lynco, went on to a better life on Friday,  October 12, 2012.

He was born December 23, 1937, in Laurel Branch, W.Va., a son of the late James Dillard and Hattie McCarty Banther Sr.

JD was a member of UMWA local 7604 and worked at Kopperston #1 mine.

Along with his parents he was also preceded in death by a sister, Mary Lou Lambert and brother in law Arthur Lambert; a sister, Elsie Mae Abshire, and a brother, John Banther.

He is survived by his loving wife of 44 years Janice Faye Brown Banther; a daughter Wanda Gail Perry of North Carolina; three sons, Mark Banther of North Carolina, Jimmie Banther and wife Kimberly of Matheny, and Jackie Banther and wife Phyllis “Bit” of Oceana; four grandchildren, Ashley Perry, Samantha Morgan, Kyle Lusk, and Joshua Banther and wife Haleigh; one great grandchild, Kyleigh and one due in May 2013; a special niece Joyce Hatfield and husband Tim of Beckley, and a host of other loving family and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, October 18, 2012, in the Chapel of Stafford Family Funeral Home, Lynco, with Rev. Ron Harvey officiating. Burial will follow in Palm Memorial Gardens, Matheny.

Pallbearers will be grandsons and special friends of the family.

Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, October 17, 2012, at the funeral home.

LOOKOUT — Frances Catherine Fish, 52, of Lookout, passed away Friday, October 12, 2012, following a motor vehicle accident.

She was born December 4, 1959 in Brooklyn, N.Y. Frances was the daughter of the late James Marion Morris and Frances Helen Gobes.

Frances was a Motel Manager for Hillcrest Motel in Lookout. She was a member of Lovers Leap Baptist Church of Ansted.

Survivors of Frances are her husband, Michael David Fish Sr. of Lookout; a daughter, Misti Dawn Fish of Lookout; two sons, Michael David Fish Jr., of Lookout and Matthew Dellson Fish of Gatewood; sisters, Joyce Larson and Patty Huwa; brothers, Charlie Morris, Jim Morris, John Morris and William Hill; and six grandchildren.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m., Thursday, October 18, 2012, at Lookout Baptist Church Lookout, with Pastor Ron George officiating. Burial will follow in Jennette Cemetery in Lookout.

Friends may call at the church Thursday from 1 to 2 p.m.

Joyce B. Hamrick-Smith

Joyce B. Hamrick-Smith, 71, of Beckley, went home to be with the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Monday, October 15, 2012, at her home in Beckley after and extended illness.

She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She was also dedicated to her Lord first and foremost and attended Calloway Heights Baptist Church. She also worked 20 years at Beckley Hospital after retiring and finished her time as a wife and homemaker. She collected dolls, teacups, and pitchers and loved spending time with her grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her late husband, Carl Robert Hamrick; a son, Sandy Carl Hamrick; and a daughter, Tina Lynn Hamrick.

Those left to cherish her memory include her beloved husband, Charles R. Smith of Beckley; two sons, Tyrone L. Hamrick and Fred Michael Hamrick,  both of Beckley and her grandchildren, Mandy, Tyler, Zach, Melissa, and Austin Hamrick; step children,  Teresa and Kevin Cyrus, Bernadette and Henry Kelly, and Chuck Smith; step-grandchildren, Amber and David Cyrus, Makayla and Nicolle Kelly, and Ashley Smith.

Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday, October 18, 2012 at Calloway Heights Baptist Church, Beckley, with Pastors Jeff Canterbury and William Parker officiating. Following the services Joyce will be laid to rest at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Friends may gather with the family from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley.

Barbara May Hurtte

On Saturday, October 13, 2012, God sent his Angels to escort Barbara May Hurtte to her heavenly home.

The youngest of four sisters, she was born on July 6, 1933 to the late John Henry and Laura A. Traynham.

A graduate of Stratton High School, she also attended Beckley College. She was a teachers aide at Mabscott Elementary School and a restaurant manager. She became a member of the Beckley Presbyterian Church, where she actively served, enjoyed singing in the choir and served on the hospitality committee.

 Barbara had limitless faith in God. She was loving, caring and compassionate, generous, kind and forgiving, with infinite patience. Her passion was God, her husband, children, extended family and her host of friends. She always had an open door, and was an excellent cook.  

Survivors include her loving and devoted husband, Bernard C. Hurtte; their children, Renee (Reginald) Smith, Michael (Loretta) Hurtte Sr., Joseph (Monique) Hurtte, Donna (Royal) White and Mark Hurtte; three sisters, Dorothy (Bishop Azel) Colston, Maxine Carter, and Frances Hurtte; 11 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephew, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday, October 17, 2012 at Beckley Presbyterian Church, 203 S. Kanawha Street, Beckley, with Pastor John Kinnon officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Prosperity.

Friends may call one hour prior to the service at the church.

Melvin C. Lewis

LESTER — Melvin Cargyle Lewis, 75, of Lester, passed away Monday, October 15, 2012 at St. Francis/Specialty Select Hospital, Charleston.

Born on March 19, 1937, at Kingston, he was the son of the late Elijah and Eva White Lewis.

Mr. Lewis was a disabled coal miner having worked for New River Coal Company. He was a US Marine veteran.

Besides his parent, he was preceded in death by five brothers, Russell, Charles, Donald, Elijah Jr., and James; one sister, Glenna; and two nephews, Mark and Kevin.

Left to cherish his memory include his wife, Mildred Treadway Lewis of Lester; four children: Joyce (Kenneth) Carpenter, Donna Coughlin, Melvin E. Lewis, and Patricia (Frank) Mason, all of Lester; two brothers: Hollie (Shelia) Lewis and Bob (Jane) Lewis; four sisters: Dolly Dick, Gail Sheppard, Cleo Jordan, and Drema Bragg; seven grandchildren: April (Greg) Mitchem, Michael, Zachary, and Daniel Carpenter, Dean Allen, Tyler and Kymber Mason; special grandchild: Scarlett Lovell; nine nephews; and eight nieces.

The family will receive friends at the family home, 370 Sunburst Lane, Lester, W.Va.,  beginning from noon until 5 p.m., Thursday, October 18, 2012.

Graveside funeral services will be held at 5 p.m. on Thursday following the visitation with Rev. Brian McCallister officiating in the Lewis Family Cemetery at the home place.

Edward Taylor Lilly

Edward Taylor Lilly, 79, of Shady Spring, passed away on Saturday, October 13, 2012 at his home surrounded by his family.

Born on May 21, 1933 at Ellison Ridge, W.Va., he was the son of the late Howard L. Lilly and Clarice E. Graham Lilly.

In addition to his  parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Lloyd Lilly.

Edward was a retired coal miner with 33 years of service, was a member of the UMWA since 1956, and was a member and deacon of the Rich Creek Primitive Baptist Church near Matoaka, W.Va.

He was a Korean Conflict Veteran, having served in the US Army.

Those survivors left to cherish his memory include his wife of 60 years, Virginia A. Wills Lilly. His children; Doug Lilly and his wife Rebecca of Nimitz, Larry Lilly and his wife Anna of Shady Spring, Sherry Lilly and her husband Gene of Jumping Branch, Beverly Underwood and her husband Randy of Coal City, and Carol Dameron and her husband Mark of Beckley. Brothers, Merlin Lilly and his wife Shirley of Ellison Ridge, Arnold R. Lilly and his wife Susie of Flat Top, Wilbert Lilly and his wife Nancy of Flat Top, Grady Lilly and his wife Diane of Ellison Ridge; a sister, Vada Wyrick and her husband Delmar of Radford, Va., and a sister-in-law Jo Marie Lilly of Clyde, Ohio. Grandchildren: Gena Smith, Jamie Lilly, Michael Lilly, Kristen Lea, James Underwood, Holly Howerton, Tiffany Dameron-Massie, and Christopher Dameron. Great-grandchildren, T.J. Smith, Aleah Lilly, Ariel Lilly, Kian Lilly, Arianna Lilly, Ashton Lilly, Gabby Massie, Brennan Dameron, and Taylor Miller.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home Shady Spring Chapel on Thursday, October 18, 2012 at 1 p.m., with Elder Tony Pack and Elder Sam Walker officiating. Entombment will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens Mausoleum at Prosperity.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 6 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday. Pallbearers will be grandsons. Military graveside rites will be conducted by the Oak Hill VFW Post #3110 Honor Guard.

Mr. Eddie Joseph Steelman, 66, of Beckley died Wednesday, October 10, 2012 at Raleigh General Hospital.

Born February 1, 1946 in Raleigh County, he was the son of the late Joseph and Julia M. Moore Steelman.

Mr. Steelman was a member of Outreach for Christ Christian Center, Beckley.

Ruth Woods Cooke Thorne

Ruth Woods Cooke Thorne of Beckley, passed away Monday, October 15, 2012.

Born in Beckley on October 23, 1915, she was the daughter of the late Ralph E. and Myrtle McManamay Woods of Beckley.

She was a lifelong resident of Beckley and the last of her immediate family.

Ruth was a member of the First Christian Church, member and past president of the Friendship Class, charter member of the Shepherd Center in Beckley, member of Senior Friends and the “Well I’ll Bee” organization of Beckley. She worked for J.C. Penney in Beckley for over 24 years retiring as the head of the Ladies Ready to wear department.

Ruth was preceded in death by her first husband, Kyle K. Cooke and second husband, Lamaral W. Thorne; three brothers, Fred B. Woods, Ralph J. Woods and Robert J. Woods,  all of Beckley; one sister, Virginia Chambers of Glen Daniel, and sister-in-law, Mrs. Fred (Alma) Woods of Beckley.

Survivors include her daughter, Keith Cooke Rutherford and husband Jim of Greenville, S.C.; grandson, Tim Rutherford and wife Sharon of Taylors, S.C.; great grandchildren, Bailey and Connor Rutherford of Taylors, S.C.; six nieces, Mrs. Edward (Shirley) Obugene, Mrs. Jerry (Sheila) Cook, Mrs. Floyd (Carol) Wagner all of Ohio, Mrs. Doug (Eva) O’Neal of Glen Daniel, Mrs. Karen Woods Collins of Florida, Mrs. Lowell (Lois) Davis of Columbus, Ohio; one nephew, Fred B. Woods of Beckley, several great nieces and nephews as well as many wonderful friends.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, October 19, 2012 in the Calfee Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Don Snyder officiating. Entombment will follow in Sunset Memorial Park Mausoleum A, Beckley.

Friends may visit with the family one hour prior to service on Friday.

Charles K. ‘Chuck’ Toombs

OAK HILL — Charles K. “Chuck” Toombs, 82, of Oak Hill, passed away Monday, October 15, 2012, from a sudden illness at C.A.M.C. Memorial Hospital.

 Born July 15, 1930, the son of  the late Ryland Toombs and Agnes Bowyer Toombs.

Charles was known by his friends as Chuck, and also by his family and early childhood friends by the nickname of Jerry. At the age of seventeen Chuck became the youngest person in the state to receive his pilots license, he graduated from Beckley College and was a pilot and an air traffic controller for the U.S. Air Force. While at Andrews Air Force base he helped with the landing and take offs of several U.S. President’s planes. Chuck truly loved being a pilot and working in the air traffic industry, he retired from Yeager Airport in Charleston, with 29 years as an Air Traffic Controller. Chuck was the developer and owner of the Hill’n Dale Estates mobile home court. Chuck and his wife Barbara attended the Oak Hill Church of the Nazarene.

Those left to cherish his memory include his loving wife of 17 years Barbara Hickman-Toombs of Oak Hill, daughters Kaye Woodrum-Robertson and spouse Patrick of Roanoke, Va., Kathy Hickman-James and spouse Mark of Hurricane W.Va., a sister Betty Toombs Hiser of Newark, Ohio, a brother Tom Toombs of Oak Hill. Grandchildren Darrin Woodrum, Novella Thompson, Josh and Justin James, Shelly Street, and Reece and Tori James, and three nieces and one nephew.

His remains rest at High Lawn Funeral Home Chapel, 1435 E. Main Street, Oak Hill, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday (today) and where the funeral will be held 2 p.m. Thursday with Rev. Jerry Bush, Rev David Edwards and Dr. Charles Miller officiating. Burial will follow in High Lawn Memorial Park, with military rites conducted by Oak Hill V.F.W. Post 3110.
