William Russell ‘Bill’ Baker

CANTON, Ohio — William Russell “Bill” Baker, 73, of Canton, formerly of Summersville, died  Monday, Oct. 8, 2012.

A private viewing for the family was Thursday, Oct. 11, and a service for family and friends was Friday, Oct. 12. The body was cremated.

Reed Funeral Home of Canton was in charge of the arrangements.

James Dillard ‘JD’ Banther Jr.

LYNCO — James Dillard “JD” Banther Jr., 74, of Lynco, passed away Friday, Oct. 12, 2012.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 18, in the Chapel of Stafford Family Funeral Home, Lynco, with the Rev. Ron Harvey officiating. Burial will follow in Palm Memorial Gardens, Matheny. Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 17,, at the funeral home.

Carl ‘Mel’ Cernuto

Carl “Mel” Cernuto, age 73, of Crab Orchard, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, October 13, 2012, at his home following an extended illness.

Born January 23, 1939, in Stanaford, WV, to the late Nuziato and Louise Greco Cernuto.

Mr. Cernuto was a native and lifelong resident of Raleigh County and attended the Church Of God Family Worship Center in Beckley. He graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School Class of 1957. He entered the work force in the glass business his senior year of high school with Raleigh Glass Company for 4 years, a former employee of West Virginia Glass for 46 years before he was forced to retire due to illness in 2001. He spent most of his time before retirement enjoying favorite hobbies of gardening, hunting, and sports. After retirement his time was filled with joy from his children and grandchildren. Mel never met a stranger. He was known for his loving, warm smile and outgoing personality. He was loved by all who knew him and is going to be sadly missed.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by sisters, Nellie Cernuto Hutchens and Pauline Cernuto Bonham; and a brother, Bob Cernuto and his wife Joyce.

Those left to cherish his wonderful memory include his loving wife, together for 35 years, Mrs. Pansy Bernice Cernuto, at home; sons, Mike Cernuto and wife Chris of Crab Orchard, and Dwayne Cernuto and wife Lisha of Crab Orchard, and Joe Cernuto of Crab Orchard; daughters, Lisa Daniel and husband Talmedge of Fitzpatrick Road, and Gina Cernuto and companion Mike of Crab Orchard; stepson, Daniel Maples of Beckley; brother, Charles Cernuto and wife Lula Mae of Fitzpatrick Road; brother-in-law, Charles Ballengee of Albemarle, NC; six grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; a special nephew, Danny Hutchens and his wife Freda of Lewisburg; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and his beloved cat, Jesse, whom he loved.

Mel’s Going Home Celebration will be conducted at 12 p.m. Tuesday, October 16, 2012, at the Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Chapel in Beckley with Rev. Walter Leach officiating. Interment will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Last Supper Garden, in Prosperity.

Pallbearers will be family and friends.

Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the funeral home on Tuesday.

LOOKOUT — Frances Catherine Fish, 52, of Lookout, passed away Friday, Oct. 12, 2012, following an automobile accident.

Gladys Ruth Spangler Hall

Gladys Ruth Spangler Hall, age 80, of Prosperity, passed away on Saturday, October 13, 2012, after a short illness.

Born January 23, 1932, in Bradley, a daughter to the late Howard Spangler and Retha Pack Spangler.

Mrs. Hall was a homemaker and a member of the Terry Independent Christian Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by sisters, Shirley Yates and Joyce Trent; and her brother, Henry Gray.

Those left to cherish her memory include her loving and faithful husband of 61 years, Rev. Gene Hall, at home; daughters, Jackie Hamilton of Beckley and Sharon Ballengee and husband Ronnie of Beckley; sons, Bobby Hall of Prosperity and Ronnie Hall and wife Missy of Grandview; sisters, Laura Neely of Beckley, Janice Campbell Smith of Beckley, and Glenna “Punkin” Halstead of Flat Top; brothers, Leroy Gray of Oak Hill and Leslie Gray of Prosperity; nine grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.

A celebration of Mrs. Hall’s life will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, October 17, 2012, at the Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Chapel in Beckley, with Rev. Ronnie Hall and Rev. Gene Snuffer officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park, Harper Road in Beckley.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Visitation will be held from 12 to 2 p.m. at the funeral home on Wednesday.

Mrs. Barbara Hurtte, 79, of Beckley, died Saturday, Oct. 13, 2012.

Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 17, at Beckley Presbyterian Church, 203 S. Kanawha St., Beckley, with Pastor John Kinnon officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Prosperity. Friends may call one hour prior to the service at the church.

Jackie Justice

Jackie Justice, 66, of Crab Orchard, passed away October 13, 2012, in Raleigh General Hospital, following a long illness.

Born April 23, 1946, in Jolo, he was the son of the late Cecil and Erma Sizemore Justice.

Jackie was a disabled coal miner, an avid fan of the West Virginia Mountaineers and the New York Yankees, but his joy was spending time with his children and grandchildren; Jackie was also a member of the Grace and Truth Ministries of Coal City.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two brothers Charles “Rock” Justice and David “Deon” Justice; one sister Lula Gay Justice.

Those left to cherish his memory include his loving wife of 46 years, Vickie Gail Shumate Justice of Crab Orchard; three sons, Bo Justice and companion Sharee Ballard of Pax, Douglas and his wife Cindy Justice of Beckley, Timmy and his wife Kelley Justice of Danese; one daughter, Angie and her husband Danny Painter of Pax; nine grandchildren, Jake Justice, Seth Justice, Dustin Justice, Tyler Painter, Brianna Justice, Whittney and Brittney Justice, Carly Jo Justice, Cassidy Justice; one great-grandchild, Kayleigh Leann Justice, and her mother Courtney Drennen; two brothers Terry Justice of Crab Orchard and Gerald Justice of Princewick; two sisters, Denna and her husband Robert Blythe of Crab Orchard, Janet and her husband Gary Blankenship of Beckley; special friends, Johnny McGraw, Diane Cawley, and Grass Spencer. He will be missed by many very dearly loved friends and family.

A service celebrating Jackie’s life will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, October 18, 2012, in the chapel of Blue Ridge Funeral Home with Pastor Bill Spencer officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens.

James Crouch, Mark Nelson, Seth Justice, Jake Justice, Dustin Justice, and Tyler Painter will serve as pallbearers.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Edward Taylor Lilly, 79, of Shady Spring, passed away Saturday, Oct. 13, 2012.
