VICTOR — Gene Marguerite Fitzwater, 91, of Victor, with family by her bedside, slipped quietly away from the Bowers Hospice House to Heaven on Tuesday, October 29, 2013. She had been a resident of the Summit Assisted Living for seven years.

Gene was born at Graydon, W.Va., the place she always affectionately called “out home.” She was the last surviving member of her immediate family which included her parents, George Jackson and Annie Heald Clendenin: brothers George, Charles, Lorrie; sisters Edith McKown, Violet Moses, Kathleen Nickell, Maxine Barker and an infant sister.

She was also preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Carl C. Fitzwater, who fell in love with her at first sight as he told his family, “I don’t know her name, but I just met the girl I’m going to marry.”

Gene was a member of Victor Methodist Church and Ansted High School graduating class of 1941; she was an accomplished seamstress, having worked in clothing factories during WWII. She used her artistic talent to design handmade quilts for family and friends.

Left to cherish her memory are her daughters and sons-in-law, Sylvia and Ralph Parks of Victor, Harriett and Paul Nusbaum of Charleston: grandchildren, Rachel and Johnny Carte of LaVista, Carl and Brandy Parks of Hico, Nathan and Holly Parks of Nallen, Michael Nusbaum of Morgantown and Brooke Nusbaum of Boston, Mass.; great-grandchildren, Emily and Catherine Carte, Renee, Sidney, Halee, Davis and Maryn Parks; sisters-in-law, Marie Fitzwater, Audrey Fitzwater, Mary Dailey, Anna Kinslow; and many nieces and nephews.
