Wilma Jean Adams

I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith. 2 Timothy 7:7.

FANROCK — Wilma Jean Adams, 78, of Fanrock, went to be with the Lord on Friday, October 25, 2013, at her home surrounded by her loving family. She was cherished and loved by so many, she will be greatly missed.

She was born on December 23, 1934, at Indian Creek to the late Herbert and Delcie Short.

She retired from Welch Emergency Hospital in 1969. She was a homemaker and a member of Brier Creek Tabernacle Church. She loved quilting, crocheting, Cooking, camping, and spending time with family and friends.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband Ernest Atwell; twin sons Kenneth and Earnest Atwell; a grandson Joey Rose; brothers Orville Ray Short, and Herbie Short, Jr.; and a special aunt Sarah St.Clair.

Mrs. Adams is survived by her husband of 46 years, Robert Lee Adams; daughters Barbara (Jim) Wyrick of Princeton, and Linda (Bo) Rasnake of Fanrock; daughters-in-law Liz Atwell of Indian Creek, and Jackie Blankenship of Indian Creek; one sister Helen (Ronnie) Stafford of Beaver; two brothers Ronny Short of Matheny, and Roger (Gail) Short of Cleveland, OH; 12 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, October 28, 2013, at Brier Creek Tabernacle with Rev. Earnest Francis and Rev. Scotty Cline officiating. Reggie Stafford, soloist. Burial will follow at the Brewster Point Cemetery, Indian Creek. Pallbearers will be grandsons.

The family will receive family and friends from 6 to 9 p.m. on Sunday, October 27, 2013, at the Church.

Ronald G. Baker

Ron (Ronnie) Baker was born on November 6, 1940, at Mullens in Wyoming County and died on October 20th at the Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital. His parents, preceding him in death, were the late John Anderson Baker and Louise Grace Baker of Beckley.

Ron spent most of his early years in Beckley, graduating from Woodrow Wilson High School in 1958. He served in the Air Force for 4 years before finding work near Charleston, West Virginia. Initially, he was employed by FMC Corporation in South Charleston helping build armored personnel carriers, but spent the majority of his work life with Dunbar Printing Company in the bindery department. Ron was especially fond of hunting and hiking in the West Virginia hills where he gained special pleasure in improving his skills in archery. He also enjoyed traveling to Canada to fish with friends.

Ron retired in about 2006 and became the heroic caregiver for his mother and father in their later years on Mankin Avenue in Beckley. Ron was a member of the United Methodist Temple. He is survived by one brother, Michael Baker of Grand Junction, Colorado, and nephews Ethan, also of Grand Junction, and Aaron of Houston, Texas.

The Baker Family would like to acknowledge the assistance provided by caregivers Debbie Adams and Jamie Wolfe and his supportive Mankin Avenue neighbors.

Funeral services will be Monday, October 28th, at 1 p.m. at the Melton Mortuary Chapel. Rev. Dr. Sam Stone will be officiating. Burial will follow in the Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens at Prosperity.

The family will receive friends from noon until the service hour.

Nina Virginia Blair

Nina Virginia Blair, 95, of Crab Orchard, went to her eternal home on Friday, October 25, 2013, just one month shy of her 96th birthday.

Born November 25, 1917, in Danbury, NC, she was the daughter of the late William Wesley and Jennie Gray Rhodes.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by brothers, William Hollis Rhodes, Posey E. Rhodes; sister, Josie Rhodes Stevens; special sister-in-law, Ellen Lackey Rhodes; and stepson, Bruce “Buddy” Taylor.

Nina graduated from Lawsonville High School in 1937 and moved to Crab Orchard in the late 1930s. She owned and operated Nina’s Market in Crab Orchard for many years. Nina was a member of the Crab Orchard Baptist Church and attended the Fellowship Sunday school class as her health permitted. She was also an active member of Circle #1.

Survivors include her son, Donald Blair of Crab Orchard; grandchildren, Mrs. Christopher (Sandra) Graham of Beckley, Mrs. Dale (Joanna) Fitzpatrick, II, of Crab Orchard, Ralph Bailey of Long Branch, WV, Gregory Taylor of Daniels, WV; great-grandchildren, Dakota Blankenship, Sidney Graham, Destiny Blankenship, Alden Fitzpatrick, II, Alex Fitzpatrick, Tyler Bailey, Hannah Bailey; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted at 12 p.m. Tuesday, October 29, 2013, in the Calfee Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Mike Sisson and Pastor Jennie Leake Hemrick officiating.  Entombment will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens.

Friends may visit with the family on Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home and one hour prior to service on Tuesday.

Pallbearers will be Chris Graham, Dale Fitzpatrick, Pete Graham, Butch Harper, Greg Taylor and Barry Stevens.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers donations be made to the Crab Orchard Baptist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 446, Crab Orchard, WV 25827.

MOUNT LOOKOUT — Norma Jean Darby, 76, of Mount Lookout, passed away Oct. 25, 2013.

In keeping with the families’ wishes her body was cremated and there will be no services.

SETH — Hazel Dodrill, 83, of Seth, died Friday, Oct. 25, 2013.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 29, in the Armstrong Funeral Home, Whitesville, with the Rev. Jr. Perdue and the Rev. Troy Howerton officiating. Interment is in Pineview Cemetery, Orgas. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Gloria Louise ‘Mutt’ Canterbury Prichard

KOPPERSTON — Gloria Louise “Mutt” Canterbury Prichard, 80, of Kopperston, died Saturday, Oct. 26, 2013.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 29, at the Oceana Freewill Baptist Church with Pastor Jackie Grimmett officiating. She will be laid to rest in the mausoleum at Palm Memorial Gardens, Matheny. Friends may gather with the family from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday, Oct. 28, at the church.

David W. Rutledge

COAL CITY — David W. Rutledge, 63, of Coal City, passed away Friday, Oct. 25, 2013.

Walter W. Weiford

BUCKEYE — Walter William Weiford, age 61, of Buckeye, passed away Friday, October 25, 2013, at the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Born November 21, 1951, at Marlinton, he was the son of the late William Paul Weiford and Mary Elizabeth Graham Weiford.

Walt graduated from Marlinton High School in 1969, received his degree in psychology from Marshall University and his Juris Doctor degree from West Virginia University. He established a law office in Marlinton, and served as Prosecuting Attorney of Pocahontas County for 17 years.

He was a member of Marlinton Presbyterian Church, member and Past Master of Masonic Lodge #127 and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star Chapter #97.

Walt was an accomplished musician, playing first in a rock band, The Not Quite Five, and later in the bluegrass band Stompin’ Crick.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Donna Jean Weiford Dunbrack; his maternal grandparents, Walter and Addie Graham; and paternal grandparents Detimis Notley and Mary Alice Kellison Weiford.

He is survived by his wife, Robin Wickline Weiford, of Buckeye; a daughter, Jillian Weiford Lacasse, and husband, Andrew, of Buckeye; and niece, Addie Dunbrack Pennington, of Barboursville.

A private family service was held Saturday, October 26.
