Ellen Marie Argabright

CROSS LANES — Ellen Marie Argabright, 73, of Cross Lanes, formerly of Summersville, died Saturday, Sept. 7, 2013.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 11, in the Waters Funeral Chapel at Summersville with the Rev. Thomas Harper officiating. Burial will follow in the Hilltop Union Cemetery at Oak Hill. Friends may call one hour prior to the service Wednesday at the funeral chapel.


Ouida Geraldine Brown

CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. — Ouida Geraldine Brown, of Christiansburg, passed away Friday, Sept. 6, 2013.

A memorial service will be at 5 p.m. Thursday,  Sept. 12, at the Bethel United Methodist Church in Radford. The family will receive friends from 3:45 to 5 p.m. and after the service.

Eunice Faye Elkins Dangerfield

SCARBRO — Eunice Faye Elkins Dangerfield of Scarbro, born Dec. 15, 1931, died of complications of Alzheimer’s disease on Saturday, September 7, 2013. She passed away surrounded by her immediate family: Kenneth Dangerfield, her husband of 64 years; her daughter Susan Smith of Oak Hill, W.Va. and Susan’s husband Gary; her daughter Kelli Dangerfield of Scarbro, WV; her son Kenneth Bruce Dangerfield of Morgantown, WV and his wife Vicki; her son Wesley Dangerfield of Charlotte, NC, and his wife, Mazie; and her son Barry Dangerfield of Bristol, TN, and his wife Linda.

Eunice grew up in Pax, WV, and lived most of her adult life in Scarbro, WV. She enjoyed spending time with her family, including her seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She was active in the community, member of the Fayette County Black Lung Association, former Treasurer of the National Black Lung Association and helped to build walking paths in the area. She was a retired employee of Lilly’s Jewelers of Beckley, WV. She liked to cook and read in her spare time.

She is survived by her brother James Murdock and his wife Milda of Knoxville, TN; her brother Larry Murdock and his  wife Helen of Princeton, WV; her sister Sandra Burress and her husband William of Steubenville, OH, and her brother Carl D. Murdock and his wife Sue of Mt. Hope, WV, preceded in death by sister Pat Maynor and husband, Dillard from Detroit, MI.

She will be cremated, as she requested. A celebration of her life for close family will be held at a later date. She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother and she will be missed.

William Dunford

William Dunford, age 83, of Mabscott, passed away on Sunday, September 8,  2013, at the Beckley VA Medical Center.

Born on April 29, 1930, at War, he was the son of the late Avery L. Dunford and Flossie Thornquest Dunford.

Mr. Dunford was retired from the U.S. Air Force with 13 years of service, and also retired from the U.S. Postal Service with 17 years of service.

Mr. Dunford was of the Christian faith and had made his home at Mabscott for most of his adult life. He was a member of the Air Force Sergeant’s Service Association, VFW 4326 Sophia-Midway, WV, and the NARFE. He also was a graduate of Stoco High School.

Mr. Dunford was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Peggy Sue Dunford Mills, by his brothers, Eugene, Albert, Tivis, Samuel, and Donald Dunford, and by his sisters Inez and Pinkelene.

Surviving wife, Launa Horwath Dunford; three children, William Dunford Jr. and his wife Laura of Elberton, Ga., Keith Dunford and his companion Janell Cook of Daniels and Jo Ellen Colo and her husband Kevin of Vancouver, Wash.; five grandchildren, Leslie, Allen, Tristan, Kaylee, and Ella, and three great-grandchildren also survive.

Committal services will be conducted at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens Mausoleum on Wednesday, September 11, 2013, at 2 p.m. with Rev. Charles Bright officiating. Entombment will follow at the mausoleum. There will be no visitation.

Danny Ray Hess, 38, of Midway, passed away Thursday, Sept. 5, 2013.

Services will be 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 11, at Tankersley Funeral Home Chapel. Friends may call one hour prior to services Wednesday at the funeral home. In keeping with Danny’s wishes, cremation will follow.

BURLINGTON, N.C. — Norma Etta Leeber, 66, died Monday, Sept. 9, 2013.

Memorial service will be 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 12, at George Brothers Funeral Service, Greensboro, N.C.

Etta Louise Freeland Lilly

HURRICANE — Etta Louise Freeland Lilly, 80, of Hurricane, died Saturday, September 7, 2013, at Midland Meadows Assisted Living.

Born July 27, 1933, at Jumping Branch, she was the daughter of the late Aaron W. “Poppy” and Dora Hogan Freeland.

Mrs. Lilly was a 1949 graduate of Hinton High School. On November 19, 1949, she married Zane Lilly. They lived in Beckley until 1962 and then moved to Martinsburg, W.Va. They have subsequently lived in Austin, Texas, Falls Church, Va., and Hurricane, W.Va.

Mrs. Lilly was a homemaker early in her marriage and later worked as a medical assistant in northern Virginia and more recently at Charleston Cardiology in Charleston, W.Va. She was a member of the Church of Christ.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Joe Freeland, and two sisters, Catherine Cox and Bohmer Hatcher.

Survivors include her husband of 63 years, Zane Lilly; two sons, Dr. Donald Lilly and wife Kathie of Charleston, W.Va., and David Lilly and wife Gerri of Garland, Texas; a daughter, Dr. Susan Wright and husband Bill of Huntington, W.Va.; a brother, Herbert Freeland and wife Retha of Roanoke, Va. Grandchildren, Emily Lilly and husband Christopher Garnes, Lindsey Lilly, Amanda Tanner and husband Matt, Amy Bailey and husband Brian, Marshall Lilly and wife Hayden and Ethan Lilly and wife Brittany.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, September 11, 2013, at Pivont Funeral Home Chapel in Hinton with Allen Meadows officiating. Burial will follow in Lilly-Crews Cemetery at Nimitz, W.Va.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to services on Wednesday at the funeral home.

Joyce Shelby Jean Walton

Joyce Shelby Jean Walton, 70, of MacArthur, passed away Sunday, September 8, 2013.

Born January 15, 1943, in Amigo, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Emmit Henry and Eleanor Hankins Hutton.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Leslie Ray Walton, in May 2013.

Shelby was retired from Princess House.

Survivors include a son, Doug Walton and wife Robin of Crab Orchard; daughter, Kathy Mullins and husband Hurley of MacArthur; grandchildren, Tyler, Stephanie, Jonathan and Rachel; two great-grandchildren; sisters, Mary Russell and husband Omes of Whitwell, Tenn., Tip Foley and husband Lonzo of Black Eagle, W.Va., Josephine Coalson of Amigo, W.Va., and a brother, E.H. Hutton and wife Linda of Black Eagle, W.Va.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, September 11, 2013, at the Hollywood Missionary Baptist Church with Pastor Tom Wallace officiating.
