Margaret Mae ‘Sloan’ Sydenstricker

Margaret Mae “Sloan” Sydenstricker, 78, of Beckley, passed away Thursday, August 29, 2013.

Born November 12, 1934, in Mabscott, she was the daughter of the late Henry and Myrtle Sloan. Besides her parents Margaret was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Sydenstricker; daughter, Paula Sydenstricker; and brothers, Harold and Frank Sloan.

Margaret was a retired bus aide for the Raleigh County Board of Education and a member of the Calvary Assembly of God.

Survivors include a son, David Sydenstricker and wife Theresa of Grandview; daughter, Rebecca Stowers of Shady Spring; grandchildren, April Taylor and husband Alan of Princeton, John, Amanda and Mary Stowers, of Shady Spring, Michael and Wesley Flannery of Beckley; 6 stepgrandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren, 14 great-great-grandchildren and numerous other family.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Monday, September 2, 2013, at Calvary Assembly of God, 319 Sunset Drive, Beckley, WV, with Pastor John Jordan officiating. Burial will follow in Calfee Cemetery at Mt. Tabor. Friends may visit with the family from 11 a.m. until service time on Monday at the church.

Pallbearers will be Roger D. Stowers, Jr., Roger A. Stowers, Sr., Roger A. Stowers, Jr., Alan Taylor, Michael Flannery and Wesley Flannery.

Carrie Richmond Stone Weiford

Carrie Richmond Stone Weiford, age 94, of Shady Spring, WV, and Inverness, Florida, passed away at 6:03 a.m. Tuesday, August 27, 2013, at the Hospice House of Citrus County, Florida, following a short illness.

Born on March 3, 1919, at Table Rock, WV, she was the daughter of the late William Kelly Richmond and Ellen Nora Redden Richmond.

Carrie was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, James W. Weiford, on January 6, 2006, by seven brothers, Elliott, Everett, Elmer, Frank, Percy, Charlie, and Forrest Richmond, by five sisters, Gladys Acord, Tennis Redden, Leona Carper, Dell Richmond, and Ida Gilkerson. She was also preceded in death by paternal grandparents, Nathan and Mary Wills Richmond, maternal grandparents, Harrison Redden, and Mary “Polly” Kidwell Redden.

Carrie graduated from Shady Spring High School in 1936. She attended Beckley College and Concord College. She was an employee of the Raleigh County Board of Education for 35 years as an elementary teacher. She taught at Toney’s Fork, Penman, Clifftop and Shady Spring. She was a member of the Grandview Christian Church on Table Rock Road.

Survivors include her daughter, Le Rue Stone Crook Mahaffey and her companion Leonard Dickerson of Shady Spring, and Inverness, Florida. Grandson, Zane Crook, granddaughter Tonya Crook Smith and her husband Terry Smith, great-grandson Colby Smith, all of Shady Spring, Several nieces and nephews, also many other relatives, friends, and her beloved dog, Shasha.

The family extends special thanks to her caregiver, Leonee “Lee” Winburn, and to Hospice of Citrus County, Florida.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel in Beckley on Sunday, September 1, 2013, at 2 p.m. with Pastor Terry Newton and Pastor Oscar Schwitzerlette officiating. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens at Prosperity, WV. Friends may visit with the family two hours prior to the services on Sunday. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Hospice of Citrus County, P.O. Box 641270, Beverly Hills, Florida 34464.
