Mr. Charlie Smith Jr., 77, of Beckley, died Friday, August 16, 2013, at Bowers Hospice House.
Born September 4, 1935, in Glen Rogers, he was the son of the late Charlie Lemous Smith Sr. and Bessie Lawson Smith Penn.
Mr. Smith was a security guard for the VA Hospital.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his two brothers, James Smith, infant brother, Phillip Smith, and sister, Barbara Reed.
Left to cherish precious memories are his wife, Fredena Smith; sisters, Bransford Gordon-Cartelle and Wanda Mann; brother, Harvey Smith; children, Andrea Sweatte, Jennifer (Jerry) Spaulding, Charlie (Alice) Smith III, Laurie (Marvin) Lawson, Michael (Thursa) Smith; 12 grandchildren, three great- grandchildren, and a host of other relatives and friends.
As per his request, there will be no visitation or service.

U.S. Army Master Sgt. Ret. James ‘Jim’ Bryant Walker
SPRING LAKE, N.C. — U.S. Army Master Sgt. Ret., James “Jim” Bryant Walker, 71, of Spring Lake, passed away in his residence on Friday, August 16, 2013 after a long illness.
Master Sgt. Walker served in the United States Army for more than 21 years with distinguished and honorable service including two combat tours in Vietnam. He enlisted in the U.S. Army, West Virginia National Guard in 1960 and entered active duty service in May of 1961. Before retiring on June 30, 1982, his assignments included serving as First Sergeant, 396th Transportation Company, 4th Transportation Battalion, Germany and various other units to include 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg; Americal Division in Vietnam; United States Army Garrison at Heidelberg; 173rd Airborne Brigade in Vietnam in 1965; 101st Airborne Division at Fort Campbell, and the West Virginia U.S. Army National Guard in his home state.
He is preceded in death by his son, Ken Lamar Walker; mother, Lorena Alley; sister, Alta Underwood; and great-granddaughter, Selina Walker.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Eva; daughter, Raquel White of Spring Lake; sons: James Walker Jr. and his wife, Lisa of Decatur, Alabama and Timothy Walker and his wife, Stephanie of Albany, Ohio; sisters: Della King and her husband, James of Beckley, and Margaret Hulvey and her husband, Roy of also of Beckley; grandchildren, Dylan and Jonathan White of Spring Lake, Tiffany Walker of Athens, Alabama and Amber Walker of Madison, Ala.; and six great grandchildren.
