Charles ‘Leon’ Bolen
Charles “Leon” Bolen, age 68, peacefully passed away Saturday, Aug. 17, 2013, with family by his side. He fought a courageous 16 month battle with pancreatic cancer.
He was born Oct. 27, 1944, in Coal City, he was the son of the late Charles “Clenda” Bolen and Edith “Helen” Bolen. He was preceded in death by his siblings, Larry Bolen, Carolyn Bolen and Darlene Lansberry and father-in-law, John Mitchem and brother-in-law, Paul Mitchem.
He is survived by his wife, Rachel Bolen; son, Lee Bolen; daughter, Jo Bolen and grandson, Lee Lee Bolen.
Leon is also survived by his brothers, Lanny Bolen of Max Wellington, W.Va., Leslie (Dee) Bolen of Ghent, W.Va. and sister, Judy Shulick of Culpepper, Va., Betty Sue Bolen of Princeton, W.Va. and Corky Lansberry of Indian Head, Md.; in-laws, Micki Lavis of Akron, Ohio, Flora (Lionel) Griffis of Fairfax, Va., John (Lou) Mitchem of Crab Orchard, W.Va., Ruby Gill of Oakton, Va.; mother-in-law, Mertha Mitchem of Crab Orchard; 20 nieces, nephews and countless other family and friends.
Leon grew up in Coal City and was a graduate of Beckley College and Akron University. He spent his life as a building contractor and his work can be seen around WV and other states. He had a true passion for life and enjoyed being with family, laughing with friends, antiquing, and was an amazing cook.
He was a wonderful father, loving husband, loyal friend, and the best paw-paw a boy could ask for. He will be greatly missed but will be remembered for his strength, honesty and sense of humor.
He was a proud American and a U.S. Navy Veteran.
The family would like to give a special thank you to the VA Hospital, Hospice of Southern WV and friends and family.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 21, 2013, at Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley, with Bob Mattox officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will be family and close friends.
Friends may gather with the family from noon until service time Wednesday at the funeral home.
