Ira Dupuy (I.D.) Lilly

ORLANDO, Fla. — Ira Dupuy (I.D.) Lilly of Orlando, Florida, passed away at his residence with family on March 27, 2013, at the age of 93. He was born in the upstairs of an old store building his mother owned and operated in Cool Ridge, WV, on January 26, 1920. After earning a degree in teaching from Concord (Athens, WV), he taught in a one-room schoolhouse in the early 1940s. During World War II, he proudly enlisted in the Navy, where he was stationed in Lakehurst, NJ. I.D. served as a blimp pilot in North Africa, Spain and France. In addition, he was second in command of a blimp that flew missions over the Straits of Gibraltar, searching for German submarines entering the Mediterranean Sea. While serving the Navy in World War II, I.D. attained a ranking of LTJG. After leaving the Navy, he served as a reserve officer until June 1967.

In August of 1947, I.D. married the love of his life, Allegra Daniel, of Beckley, WV. In Beckley, he owned and operated Lewis Terminal, a 24-hour truck stop, at 5-Corners and began a small trucking company. He later moved to Orlando, FL, where he was a successful truck broker and owned/operated a trucking company. He worked closely with the Florida Gift Fruit Shippers Association in Orlando, retiring as the Transportation Manager in the mid-1980s. After retirement, I.D. developed a successful Office/Warehouse rental complex in west Orlando, which continues in operation today. Being a successful businessman was not I.D.’s greatest pleasure in life; his greatest joy was his wife of 65 years, family and friends.

I.D. was truly dedicated to the preservation of the Lilly Reunion, which he faithfully supported and attended throughout the years. He also served as a past board member.

He is superseded in death by his father, Ira; mother, Leona; and two brothers, Franklin and Major. He is survived by his daughter, Barbara Savino and her husband, Bill, of Longwood, FL; his son, Larry Lilly and his wife, Klaye, of Cool Ridge, WV; and his son, Alan Lilly and his wife, Cindy Schleier, of Orlando, FL. I.D. is also survived by his grandson, Michael Savino; his wife, Tisa; and their children, Gavin and Carson of Enterprise, FL; his grandson, Daniel Savino and his wife, Paula, of Raleigh, NC; his grandson, Clayton Lilly and his wife, Christa Lilly, Ph.D., of Fairmont, WV; his granddaughter, Kelley Wamsley, Ph.D., and her husband, Brock, of Starkville, MS; and his granddaughters, Meghan Lilly, M.D., of Harrisburg, PA, and Adriene Lilly of Guizhou, China.
