Charles Wesley Adkins
Charles Wesley Adkins, age 67, of Beckley, WV, passed away at the Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital on Thursday, March 28, 2013, after a long illness.
Born on June 28, 1945, at Sandstone, WV, he was the son of the late Forest Wesley Adkins and Madeline Meadows Adkins.
Mr. Adkins was a retired building contractor, and was of the Protestant faith. He had made his home in Beckley for the past 30 years. He enjoyed writing songs, building airplanes, playing music, and spending time with family and friends. He was a ham radio operator, and also a C.B. operator, by the name of “Clawhammer.” Mr. Adkins was a graduate of Hinton High School. He also was a former pastor and was a local evangelist. Mr. Adkins was a wonderful preacher.
A sister, Barbara Ann Adkins, preceded him in death.
Those survivors left to cherish his memory include his wife and caregiver Lura “Lou” Rhodes Adkins.
Three children, Charles Wesley Adkins Jr. and his wife Pamela Medford Adkins, of Valdese, NC, Wanda Mae Shelton and her husband Jimmy Dean Shelton of Morganton, NC, and Richard Lee Adkins and his wife Lily Ann Adkins of Beckley.
Seven brothers, Vernon Adkins and his wife Drema of Beckley, Warren Adkins and his wife Lisa of Winchester, Va., Gary Adkins of Brooks, WV, Farrell Adkins and his wife Susie of McLeansville, NC, Robert Adkins and his wife Roberta of Thurman, Ohio, Stephen Adkins and wife Denise of Burlington, NC, and Acie Ayers and his wife Phyllis of Barksdale, WV.
Two sisters, Carol Thompson of Gibsonville, NC, and Wanda Ball and her husband Buddy of Talcott, WV.
Grandchildren, Brittany Samples, Hunter Adkins, Tyler Shelton, and Vincent Adkins, and special friend Casey Jones of Virginia are also among his survivors.
Funeral services will be conducted at the Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel in Beckley on Monday, April 1, 2013, at 1 p.m. with Rev. Ronald Adkins officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Park in Beckley. Friends may call at the funeral home one hour prior to the services on Monday. Pallbearers will be friends. HINTON — Forrest Lee Adkins, 78, of 408 Hill St., Hinton, died Friday, March 29, 2013, in Beckley following a short illness.
Born February 22, 1935, in Hinton, he was the son of the late John Samuel and Elva Gladys Lilly Adkins.
Mr. Adkins was retired from the West Virginia Department of Health & Human Resources where he was a District Sanitarian. He was a member of the West Virginia Public Health Association and the West Virginia Association of Sanitarians. He was a lifelong resident of Hinton.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Donna Rae Berry, and also by a niece, Debbie Hunter.
Survivors include a brother, Bill Adkins and wife Gloria of Hinton, three sisters, Virginia Harvey of Columbus, OH, Rose Marie Hubbard and husband Cecil of Lanman, MD, and Kara Sue Slusher and husband James of Dunkirk, MD. Special nephew, Jeffrey Slusher. Close and special friend, Tina Crook of Beckley.

HOMETOWN — Derek J. Cohenour, 32, of Hometown, formerly of Smoot, WV, passed away Friday, March 29, 2013, at C.A.M.C. Memorial following a short illness.
He was a graduate of Concord University with a B.S. in Computer Science and Mathematics. He was employed by the West Virginia Medical Institute as an Information Technology Specialist. Derek attended the Poca United Methodist Church.
Born December 10, 1980, he was the son of the late James E. and Carrell L. Cohenour.
He is survived by his loving wife, Violet Garrison Cohenour; his precious daughters, Lilly Virginia and Lila Grace Cohenour; brother, Darren (Mitzi) Cohenour of Smoot; as well as several nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

Lucy Dorsey Crist
RUPERT — Lucy Dorsey Crist, 66, of Rupert, passed away on Wednesday, March 27, 2013, at Roanoke Memorial Hospital, Roanoke, Va., following a short illness.
Born Feb. 23, 1947, at Rupert, she was the daughter of the late Mildred Bessie Fleshman Dorsey and the late William Addison Dorsey.
Lucy was a homemaker and a member of the Duo Community Baptist Church of Rupert.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Roger Dalton Crist, on Aug. 31, 2005. She was also preceded in death by a son, Jimmie Crist, and a brother, Forrest “Bud” Dorsey.
Survivors include: a daughter, Melanie Crist Myers and Jeff Myers of Quinwood; a son, Roger Lee Crist of Rupert; Lucy’s fiance, Glenn Lamb of Chesapeake, Va.; nine grandchildren, Tiera, Justin, Sasha, Cory, Lacy, Morgan, Chandler, Trinity, and Brooklyn; and three great-grandchildren, Rylee, Haylee, and Colton; and her extended family at Virginia Beach, Va.

Monna Jeanette Thomas Fulton
The Lord is my shepherd. I have fought the good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith.
Monna Jeanette Thomas Fulton, 54, passed away Wednesday, March 27, 2013, at GVMC, after being transported from White Sulphur Care Center Wednesday morning.
She was the daughter of Robert E. Lee Thomas and Shelba Jean Hughart Thomas.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Karl Fulton, in 2003.
She was a member of First Baptist Church of Rainelle.
She was a very loving mother, grandmother, sister and daughter. She enjoyed helping other residents of the nursing home and was involved in several activities there. She was looking forward to the birth of her first great-granddaughter. She passed the day before the baby was born.
Those left to cherish precious memories, besides her parents, are two daughters, Christina Ann Sline-Poore and husband Charles Poore of Alderson, Misty Dawn Fulton of Lewisburg; one son, Emanuel Garett “Gary” Sline, Jr., of Alta; four grandchildren, Shelbi Marie Withrow and Austin Daniel Garett Withrow of Alderson, Mia Faith Sline and Thomas Garett Sline of Rupert; one great-granddaughter, Rylee Marie Jeanette Bryant-Withrow; sisters Theresa Lee Thomas, address unpublished, Katherine Dawn Wallace and husband Rodney of Princeton, WV; one brother, Jeffery Dwayne Thomas of Charleston; several nieces and nephews and many friends.
Services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 2, 2013, at Wallace and Wallace Chapel in Rainelle with Pastor Bob Scharnhorst officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service (1 to 2 p.m.). Burial will follow at Wallace Memorial Cemetery, Clintonville.

Ruth Lilly Garten
HINTON — Ruth Lilly Garten, 90, of 701 Temple St., Hinton, went home to be with the Lord Thursday, March 28, 2013, at Wellmont Hospice House in Bristol, Tennessee.
Born February 3, 1923, at Pipestem, she was the daughter of the late Cecil M. and Elizabeth Pettrey Lilly.
Mrs. Garten was a homemaker and a member of the First Church of the Nazarene in Hinton.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Walter Garten. Also by three infant children, three sons, Ronnie, Eddie and Jimmie Garten, two grandsons, Tony Garten and Gary Nelson Richmond, two brothers and two sisters.
Those left to cherish her memory are five daughters, Lorenda Richmond of Hinton, Drema and husband Joey Burner of Hopewell, VA, Elizabeth Long and husband Ted of Morristown, TN, Sarah Hamm and husband Junior of Glade Spring, VA, and Betty Canterbury and husband Elvis of Ballengee, WV. Two sons, Charles Garten of Beckley and Keith Garten of Hinton. Thirteen grandchildren, twenty-two great-grandchildren, one brother, Rassie Lilly and wife Florence of Princeton, special daughter-in-law, Carol Garten of South Carolina. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 2, 2013, at Pivont Funeral Home Chapel in Hinton with Pastor Pete Cook and W.D. Hamm, Jr., officiating. Burial will follow in Rocky Mount Cemetery at Pipestem. Friends may call from 6 until 8 p.m. Monday evening at the funeral home.

SANDSTONE — James (Jim) A. Hart, 72, of Sandstone, went home to be with his mother, very peaceably in his sleep on Sunday, March 24, 2013.
Born June 10, 1940, in Fireco, WV, he was the son of the late James and Beulah Cadle Hart.
Jim loved being outdoors, hunting, fishing and playing with his grandchildren.

Deanna Lynn Adkins Hulvey
ALANDALE, Fla. — Deanna Lynn Adkins Hulvey, age 46, of Alandale, FL, passed away suddenly at her home on Friday, March 8, 2013.
Born July 4, 1966, in Portsmouth, VA, she was the daughter of the late Jesse Thomas and Glenda Gail Toney Adkins.
A brother, Thomas Ray Adkins, preceded her in death.
She is survived by sisters, Donna Wilson of South Daytona, FL, and Sharon Gutierrez of Canton, GA; brother, Daniel Adkins of Dothan; six nieces and nephews, three great-nieces and one great-nephew.
She will be sadly missed by many other family and close friends. We will carry her memory in our hearts forever.

Ira Dupuy (I.D.) Lilly
ORLANDO, Fla. — Ira Dupuy (I.D.) Lilly of Orlando, Florida, passed away at his residence with family on March 27, 2013, at the age of 93. He was born in the upstairs of an old store building his mother owned and operated in Cool Ridge, WV, on January 26, 1920. After earning a degree in teaching from Concord (Athens, WV), he taught in a one-room schoolhouse in the early 1940s. During World War II, he proudly enlisted in the Navy, where he was stationed in Lakehurst, NJ. I.D. served as a blimp pilot in North Africa, Spain and France. In addition, he was second in command of a blimp that flew missions over the Straits of Gibraltar, searching for German submarines entering the Mediterranean Sea. While serving the Navy in World War II, I.D. attained a ranking of LTJG. After leaving the Navy, he served as a reserve officer until June 1967.
In August of 1947, I.D. married the love of his life, Allegra Daniel, of Beckley, WV. In Beckley, he owned and operated Lewis Terminal, a 24-hour truck stop, at 5-Corners and began a small trucking company. He later moved to Orlando, FL, where he was a successful truck broker and owned/operated a trucking company. He worked closely with the Florida Gift Fruit Shippers Association in Orlando, retiring as the Transportation Manager in the mid-1980s. After retirement, I.D. developed a successful Office/Warehouse rental complex in west Orlando, which continues in operation today. Being a successful businessman was not I.D.’s greatest pleasure in life; his greatest joy was his wife of 65 years, family and friends.
I.D. was truly dedicated to the preservation of the Lilly Reunion, which he faithfully supported and attended throughout the years. He also served as a past board member.
He is superseded in death by his father, Ira; mother, Leona; and two brothers, Franklin and Major. He is survived by his daughter, Barbara Savino and her husband, Bill, of Longwood, FL; his son, Larry Lilly and his wife, Klaye, of Cool Ridge, WV; and his son, Alan Lilly and his wife, Cindy Schleier, of Orlando, FL. I.D. is also survived by his grandson, Michael Savino; his wife, Tisa; and their children, Gavin and Carson of Enterprise, FL; his grandson, Daniel Savino and his wife, Paula, of Raleigh, NC; his grandson, Clayton Lilly and his wife, Christa Lilly, Ph.D., of Fairmont, WV; his granddaughter, Kelley Wamsley, Ph.D., and her husband, Brock, of Starkville, MS; and his granddaughters, Meghan Lilly, M.D., of Harrisburg, PA, and Adriene Lilly of Guizhou, China.

Velma Duncan Sandoval
RICHMOND, Va. — Velma Duncan Sandoval, 87, passed from this earth and into Heaven on Wednesday, March 27, 2013.
Born April 21, 1925, in Herndon, WV, the daughter of the late Okley Thurman Duncan and Cosby Mae Radford Duncan, she was a longtime resident of Mullens, WV, and had made Princeton her home for the past 25 years.
Velma will be reunited in Heaven with her husband of 63 years, Alfonso “Al” Sandoval, Jr.; her sister, Reba Dooley; and grandson, Nathan T. Joyce.
She is survived by three children, Donald D. Sandoval and wife Susie of Columbus, OH, Judith A. Joyce and husband Butch of Richmond, VA, and Marc M. Sandoval and wife Gail of Milton, WV; six grandchildren; and eleven great-grandchildren. Velma was a 1941 graduate of Mark Twain High School in Stotesbury, WV, and a 1942 graduate of Beckley College. She worked for many years as an executive secretary and was an active member of the National Secretaries Association, as well as the Beta Sigma Phi sorority. Velma enjoyed a significant relationship with the Lord, and was a lifelong member of the Mullens Presbyterian Church, and the Princeton Presbyterian Church, where she served as an elder. She also enjoyed Bible study, and participated in numerous Bible study groups in the area. She will be missed by those who knew her for her outgoing personality, positive attitude, and infectious energy.
Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, April 1, 2013, at the Princeton Presbyterian Church with Rev. Ed Pettus officiating. Burial will follow at Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Princeton. RICHMOND, Va. — Jerry Lee Stafford, 70, of Richmond, Virginia, formerly of Wyoming County, passed away Friday, March 29, 2013, in the Bowers Hospice House following a short illness.
Born October 13, 1942, in Matheny, he was the son of the late George Earley Stafford Jr. and Dora Catherine Stewart Stafford of Eccles.
In addition to his mother he is survived by two brothers George Earley “Skip” Stafford III and his wife Yvetta of Cottondale. AL, Eugene Austin Stafford and wife Kelly of Fayetteville. Not to be forgotten his beloved pet Chiquita, and a host of nieces, nephews, and beloved friends.

Mrs. Wise returned to her heavenly home on Tuesday, March 26, 2013. Born in Beckley, West Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Roy Ray and Audrey Hazel Wills Ellison and a 1951 graduate of Berea College. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 53 years, Milton B. “Skeeter” Wise.

She will be remembered for her pure and open heart, her unfailingly kind and generous spirit and her deep faith in God’s plan.
