Harriet Jane Black

Harriet Jane Black, born July 19, 1925, passed away November 13, 2012.

Harriet served in the U.S. Navy from 1943 – 1947. She was a member of the Nehemiah Baptist Church of Cool Ridge. Harriet married Orvis Black in 1947, and they were married for 50 years.

In addition to her husband Orvis Black, Harriet is preceded in death by her daughter, Debbie Sue Black; granddaughters, Melanie Faith Black, Anna Blake and great-grandson, Joshua David Black.

Those left to cherish her memory include her sons, Donald O. Black and wife Terri of Tenn., David D. Black and wife Michelle of Cool Ridge, Robert M. Black and wife Karen of Beckley; daughters, Karen J. Black and husband Joel of Minn., Suzanne Gail Black Jenkins and husband Harold of Ohio, Kathy A. Childs and husband Danny of Beaver; her grandchildren, Kelsy, Katelyn, Donald, Dillion, Christina, Jennifer, Andrea, David II, Erica, Kayla, Justin, Mackenzie, Christopher, Chad, Danielle, Terry, Jessica and Daniel; her great-grandchildren, Brian, Jacob, Kaleb, Tyler, Nathan, Ishiah, Kaiden, Carmin, Aubree, Isabella, Jack, Elora, and Eli. Harriet will be greatly missed, “Mommie we will see you in Heaven”

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, November 17, 2012, at Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley, with Rev. Brian Harmon officiating. Entombment will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers will be Michael Black, Danny Childs, David Black, Don Black, Harold Jenkins, Joel Frederickson, Chris Cook, and Joe Prince.

Friends may gather with the family Saturday from 1 to 2 p.m. at the funeral home.

Rosemarie Corey

Rosemarie Corey, age 83 of Beckley, passed away on Wednesday, November 14, 2012, at the Raleigh Center at Daniels.

Born on June 4, 1926, at Canton, Ohio, she was the daughter of the late Joseph Solomon and Virginia Waiken.

Mrs. Corey was a homemaker, and was a member of the St. Francis deSales Catholic Church in Beckley.   She was a member of the Ladies of Saint Francis and was a member of the Red Hat Society.

Mrs. Corey had made Beckley her home for most of her life.

She was preceded in death by two sons, Michael and Steven Corey.

Those survivors left to cherish her memory include her husband of 64 years, Edward Michael Corey, and a son, Mark Corey of Beckley.    

A Funeral Liturgy will be held at the Saint Francis deSales Catholic Church in Beckley, on Saturday, Nov. 17, 2012 at noon, with Rev. Samuel Sacus  as the Celebrant. A Rite of Committal will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens Mausoleum at Prosperity.   

Friends may visit at the church from 11 a.m. until service time on Saturday.

Ethel Lusk

HERNDON — Ethel Rozella Lusk, 92, of Herndon, died Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2012,  at home surrounded by family.

She was born July 18, 1920, in Lillybrook, the daughter of the late Lillie Mae and Luther Jennings Lilly.

Ethel Lusk was a full-time homemaker and worked for a short time for the United States Postal Service. She was a charter member of the Bud Missionary Baptist Church. She was the oldest of five siblings. On Feb. 8, 1947, she married Eugene Lusk.

In addition to her parents, was preceded in death by brother Archie Lilly, brother-in-law Glennis Stidam and great grandson Mason Alexandrow.

She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Eugene Lusk; son and daughter-in-law, Danny and Linda Lusk of Basin; daughter and son-in-law, Dixie and Steve Fox of Elon, N.C.; and son and daughter-in-law, Dale and Judy Lusk of Prestonsburg, Ky.; granddaughter and husband,  Missy and Aaron Thompson of Culloden, W.Va.; granddaughter and husband, Tonya and Richard Nkhata of Hamilton, Ohio; granddaughter and husband, Crystal and Gary Morrison of Leitchfield, Ky.; grandson Kevin Lee of Elgin, Ill.; granddaughter Jackie Weeks of Richmond, Ky.; granddaughter and husband, Kim and Shawn Miller of Harlan, Ky.; grandson and wife, Todd  and Audra Hatfield of Pineville, Ky.  Eugene and Ethel have 11 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are brothers and wives, Junior and Naomi Lilly of Pineville, W.Va.; Arnold and Donna Lilly of Roanoke, Va.; one sister Sophia Stidam of Jacksonville, Fla.; and a sister-in-law, Gladys Lilly.

Funeral services will be conducted at 12 noon today, Nov. 16, 2012, at the Rowland H. Bailey Funeral Chapel of the Bailey-Kirk Funeral Home in Princeton, with Rev. Naomi Kaufman officiating. Interment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Princeton.

Pallbearers will be Kevin Lee, Richard Nkhata, Gary Morrison, Aaron Thompson, Shawn Miller and Sim Lee. Honorary pallbearer will be Austin Miller.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Southern WV, Inc., P.O. Box 1472, Beckley, WV 25801.

Friends may visit from 10 a.m. until 12 noon today, Friday, Nov. 16 at Bailey-Kirk Funeral Home in Princeton.

Estel Hiram ‘Junior’ McComas Jr.

Estel Hiram “Junior” McComas Jr., 50, of Beckley, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2012.

Born November 24, 1961, he was the son of Barbara Wilcox McComas and the late Estel McComas Sr.

Junior enjoyed working on antique cars and riding 4-wheelers and motorcycles. He was also an avid gardener. He was a 1979 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School and was an electrician.

In addition to his father, Junior is preceded in death by his foster brother, Opie Jones Jr.

Those left to cherish his memory include his mother, Barbara McComas of Beckley; sister, Sandra Craddock and husband Tommy of Maple Fork; foster sisters, Marilyn Houck and husband Barry of Norfolk, Va., Pat Jones Bays and husband Johnny of Beckley, Glenda Humphrey and husband Hilen of Fairmont; his faithful companion, “Roscoe”, a Jack Russell  Terrier; many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 17, 2012, at Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley, with Pastor Roger E. Pauley officiating. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens.

Friends may gather with the family Saturday from 10 to 11 a.m. at the funeral home.

Betty N. Penn Poindexter

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Betty N. Penn Poindexter, 78, formerly of Beckley, passed away on Sunday, Nov. 11, 2012, at George Town University Hospital, following a long illness. She was born May 7, 1934, in Covington, Va., to the late Hunn and Catherine Penn.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank C. Poindexter; two sisters, Gladys Redmond and Geraldine Martin; five brothers, Sylvester, James, Leonard, William and David Penn.

Survivors include three daughters, Judith (Kitty) Snell of East Hartford, Conn., Charlene Agee (Thomas) of Washington, D.C. and Terri Eubank (Michael) of Fort Washington, Md.; two sons, Frank (Butch) Poindexter of Beckley and David (Hopie) Poindexter (Donna) of Atlanta, Ga.; 22 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Charlotte Jackson of Opa Locka, Fla. and Mary Burns (Ernest) of Miami, Fla.; four brothers, Charles (Bo) Penn (Jackie) of Minden, Raymond (Jack) Penn of White Sulphur Springs, Donald (Mike) Penn (Dorothy) of Philadelphia, Pa. and Ronald (Skin) Penn (Rita) of Beckley and a host of family and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 17, 2012, at the Heart of God Ministries, 1703 S. Kanawha St., Beckley, with Bishop Fred T. Simms and the Rev. Thomas Steelman officiating. Burial will follow in the Greenwood Memorial Park, Beckley.

Friends may gather with the family from 12 noon until service time at the church.

Lorelle Richardson

Lorelle Richardson, age 61, of Beckley, went home to be with the Lord on Nov. 14, 2012, at the Bowers Hospice House, following a courageous battle with Alzheimers.

Born on Jan. 25, 1951, she was the daughter of the late Lee Roy Ball and Lelia Haydon Ball of Mabscott.

Lorelle attended the Calvary Assembly of God and was an educator with the Raleigh County Board of Education, earning her masters degree from Concord College and teaching for over 33 years.

Other than he father, she was preceded in death by a nephew, Robert Honaker and her brother, Harold Ball, his wife Betty and their two sons, Steven and Richard Ball.

In addition to her mother, those left to cherish her memory include her husband and caregiver, Oral Richardson of Beckley; step daughters, Karen Stone (Dwayne) of Fort Mills, S.C., Kristy Kiblinger (Chris) of Crab Orchard; her father in law, Ferman Richardson of Sprague; brothers, Bill Ball (Carol) of St Johns, Fla., Howard Ball (Claudia) of Beckley, David Ball (Bonnie) of Ococee, Fla. and Larry Daniel Ball of Mabscott; sisters, Margaret Lucas (Bill) of Mabscott, Leona Honaker (Larry) of Glen Daniel and Deborah Ullom (Larry) of Jane Lew, W.Va.; one grandson, Brayden Cole Kiblinger and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted on Saturday, Nov. 17, 2012 at 1 p.m. at the Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel in Beckley, with Bishop James Bostic officiating.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

Private interment will follow in the Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens in Prosperity.

Dennis James Taylor

OAK HILL — Dennis James Taylor, 59, of Oak Hill, died on Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2012, at Bowers Hospice House in Beckley.

Born June 06, 1953 at Oak Hill, W.Va., he was the son of the late Alfred Raymond and Anna Margaret Smith Taylor.

He was a disabled auto mechanic.

A brother, Gene Pearlie Taylor and two sisters, JoAnn Scarbrough and Shirley Milam preceded him in death.

Survivors include two daughters, Ashley Shepard and husband, Brandon of Oak Hill and Sarah Adkins and husband, Curtis of Scarbro, and one sister, Frances “Frankie” Rose of Hilltop.

Also surviving are five grandchildren, C.J., Luke, and Whitney Adkins all of Scarbro and Taylor and Braydon Shepard both of Oak Hill and a host of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 17, 2012, at Tyree Funeral Home in Oak Hill, with Rev. Melvin Adkins officiating. Burial will be at Gethsemane Memorial Gardens, Oak Hill.

Friends may call one hour prior to the service on Saturday at the funeral home.

Family members will serve as pallbearers.

Rachel Michelle Brown Toler

OCEANA — Rachel Michelle Brown Toler, 37, of Oceana, passed away August 10, 2011.

Born Dec. 18, 1973, in Mullens, W.Va., she was the daughter of Robert Dale Graham of Welch and Agnus Marie Gunter of Oceana.

Rachel attended school in Mullens.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by two daughters, Lori Michelle Brown of Matheny (with whom she shared a special bond) and Hope Leann Brown of Glen Fork; a son, Jim Remely Brown III of Glen Fork; and a grandchild, Joshuia David Lilly of Glen Fork. Those also mourning her loss are four sisters, Anita (Nikki) Graham of Pineville, Jennifer (Jenny) Lusk of Oceana, Wendy Cook of Oceana, and Tanya Acord of Lillydale; two brothers, Robert (Robby) Graham of Matheny and Joshua Graham of Oceana; two special friends, Courtney Stapleton, with whom she enjoyed hanging out with and her step-mother, Janice Graham of Welch; several nieces and nephews; and many friends and loved ones.

A memorial service will be 2 p.m., Saturday, November 17, 2012 at Glen Fork Church of God, with Bishop Darrell Stapleton officiating and the Rev. Cecil Thompson assisting. Friends may gather with the family from 1 p.m. until time of service Saturday, at the church.
