Beverly Watts Breckinridge
BELLEVUE, Wash. — Beverly Watts Breckinridge, a native and resident of Beckley for many years, died peacefully on February 25, 2014, at her home in Bellevue, Wash., at the age of 97.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Alex III, a son, Thomas, and a daughter, Jennifer.
She is survived by her son, Lex (Zonnie) of Bellevue, four grandchildren, Alex V (Kirsten) of Washington, DC, Barbara Levesque (Dominique) of Austin, Texas, Robert of New York, NY, Isabel Hall of New York, NY, and two great-grandchildren, Caroline and Alex VI of Washington, DC.
Beverly was a graduate of the University of Cincinnati College of Music and received an M.A. in Music from the Sherwood School of Music in Chicago. A professional musician until the age of 90, Beverly performed in Chicago and throughout the Midwest as a soprano and an accompanist until returning to her hometown of Beckley in 1950 where she met and married Alex and raised her children. She continued her performing career in West Virginia while also serving as the Music Director at St Stephen’s Episcopal Church. After moving to Charlottesville in 1968, Beverly served in various roles in the music program at St Paul’s Memorial Episcopal Church where she was also a member of the Vestry and the Altar Guild and a graduate of EFM. Her last position at St Paul’s prior to her retirement at age 90 was as the accompanist to the Children’s Choir. She had a long association with the Wednesday Music Club, which she also served as President.
Beverly moved to Austin, Texas, in 2007 to be with Lex and his family and to Bellevue, Wash., in 2010 when Lex took up the position as Rector of St Thomas Episcopal Church. She continued to be a dedicated musician to the end of her life, giving her last recital including works from Bach, Debussy, Ravel, and Rachmaninoff at the age of 96.
Beverly loved her family, the Episcopal Church, and the piano in equal measure and her last years were filled with all three.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 8, 2014 at St Thomas Episcopal Church, Medina Wash. Beverly’s ashes will be interred in Charlottesville at a later date.
