THURMOND, N.C. — William Dwight “Bill” Goodwin, 58, of Thurmond, formerly of Daniels, passed away Tuesday, September 17, at Carolina Medical Center in Charlotte, N.C., after a long illness.

Born November 11, 1954, in Bud, he was the son of the late Luther and Maggie Lester Goodwin.

Bill was a 1973 graduate of Herndon High School and began his working career as a nuclear welder at Newport News Ship and Drydock Company where he proudly participated in the construction of the Nimitz and Eisenhower aircraft carriers.

Bill was a self-educated electrical engineer at US Steel’s Pinnacle mining operations from 1979 until he became disabled in 2008. His thirst for knowledge was exceeded only by his talent for finding solutions. He was very highly recognized and respected in his field and always pleased to share his experience and knowledge with anyone who cared to learn.

After his forced retirement Bill enjoyed traveling with members of his family, touring the country from coast to coast. He enjoyed the wonders of nature and loved to explore the nation’s history.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Howard Ray Goodwin.

He is survived by his wife Kimberly Cooper Goodwin and two sons, Russell and wife Tammie of Hickory, N.C., Phillip and wife Jamie of Statesville, N.C., and one stepdaughter, Bridgette Cooper of McLean, Va.

Bill adored his three grandchildren, Presli, Piper and William. He was anticipating a fourth grandchild in October.

Also left to cherish his memory are eight brothers and sisters as well as their spouses. Dwaine and wife Glenda of Kingsport, Tenn., Earl and wife Sandra of Princeton, Alma Avizenis of Austin, Texas, Cathy Hartley and husband Clyde of Spanishburg, Jeanne Turner and husband Bob of Mooresville, N.C., Teresa Lawson and husband Gerald of Moore, S.C., Tracy and wife Jennifer of Huntsville, Ala., and Commander Travis Goodwin, USN Ret., and wife Carla of Fairview Heights, Ill., and by his adopted sister/cousin Charlotte Marie Moore Hall and husband Buck of Ennice, N.C.

Bill was especially proud to be called “second father” to his protégé and favorite student, Michelle Stevenson Quinn.
