Hallie W. Adkins

HOLDEN — Hallie W. Adkins, 85, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 18, 2013.

Service will be 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 21, at the Honaker Funeral Home, Logan, with the Revs. Rodney Spears and John T. Vance officiating. Entombment will follow in the Forest Lawn Cemetery, Pecks Mill. Friends may call 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Tammy Alice Alberty

OAK HILL — God looked upon our family and saw your perfect face, and even though it was early he chose your soul to take. Tammy Alice Alberty, age 45, of Oak Hill, walked into Heaven’s gates on September 17, 2013, following a short illness and passing away at Raleigh General Hospital.

Tammy was born on February 14, 1968, in Connecticut. She was the daughter of the late Clay Roger Alberty and Bonnie Faye Shrewsbury Alberty-Stump and William Edward Stump.

Tammy’s greatest achievements in life were the birth of her sons, Frankie and Chris, and her beautiful granddaughter Taya.

Tammy was preceded in death by her father Clay Roger Alberty.

Those left to cherish her memory are sons, Frankie Hatcher and Chris Hatcher, granddaughter Taya Janae Rochelle Hatcher; mother Bonnie Faye Shrewsbury Alberty Stump; brothers Roger Darrell Alberty and Frances of Crab Orchard, Noah Clayton Alberty and Patricia of Crab Orchard, Jerry Lee Alberty and Lori of Scarbro. With an array of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

To celebrate her life Graveside Rites will be held Sunday, September 22, 2013, at Canaday Cemetery in Crab Orchard, at 1 p.m., where she will be laid to rest beside her father and Pastor Dorothy Osborn will officiate. There will be no visitation.

DURBIN — Wilmer Lewis Byers, 82, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 18, 2013.

Steven Kent Cooper

SPENCER, Tenn. — Steven Kent Cooper, 58, of Spencer, formerly of Mt. Hope, passed away on Wednesday, September 4, 2013, at Generations of Tennessee Nursing Home.

Steven was born on April 24, 1955, to the late Carl Chester Cooper and Elizabeth F. Feazell Cooper Martin.

In addition to his parents, Steven is preceded in death by brothers, Randy E. Cooper, Carl “Reed” Cooper, and Dana S. Cooper.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife Patricia; daughter Christina; son Steven; brothers Gary Cooper and wife Carleen of Twinsburg, Ohio, Michael “Chuck” Cooper and wife Janet of Beckley, Kevin Cooper and wife Maryann of Stowe, Ohio; three nieces, and six nephews.

A memorial service will be held at Stanaford New Beginnings Church at Stanaford, W.Va., on Saturday, September 21, 2013, at 1 p.m. with a eulogy by his brother Michael “Chuck” Cooper.

Friends may call at the church one hour prior to the service.

Committal rites will be held at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens in Prosperity, W.Va., following the memorial service.

Anna Katherine Dickens

Anna Katherine Dickens, 88, of Fairdale, peacefully went to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Tuesday, September 17, 2013, at the Sunbridge Pine Lodge Nursing Home, surrounded by her family.

Our mother was one of our greatest blessings. She was blessed with a beautiful spirit and Godly wisdom. Her memory will be in our hearts and minds always, as well as in the hearts of all who loved her. We love her and will miss her.

Anna loved reading her Bible and spent most of her free time sewing, crocheting, and quilting. She loved bananas resulting in her longtime nickname, “Anna Banana.” She attended the Shiloh Community Church in Saxon, and was a humble and faithful servant to the Lord.

She was born on January 21, 1925, in Raleigh County, to the late Frank and Rose Bolen Jenkins.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Finley Dickens Sr., and a daughter Patty Ann Dickens, as well as three grandsons, Gregory Gene Hunt, Justin Blankenship, and Jeremy Dickens; two sons-in-law, Pastor Jerry Brooks Sr. and Norman P. Hunt, and a daughter-in-law, Vickie Dickens, both of Fairdale, and six brothers, Tom, Henry, Frank, Bobby, J.D., and Buddy Jenkins.

She is survived by her five children, Rose Hunt of Brunswick, Ohio, Jean Brooks of Fairdale, Finley Dickens Jr. of Fairdale, Tom Dickens of Fairdale and  Anita Fitzwater of Beckley; her sisters, Peggy Tackett of Fairdale, Betty Kibbe of Michigan, Velma Hudkins of Charleston and Frances Ruth Cox of Kentucky, a brother Ronnie Jenkins of Fairdale.

Also surviving are 14 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren, 14 great-great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, and family and friends.

A visitation will be held on Saturday, September 21, 2013, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home in Beckley with services beginning at 1 p.m. at the Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel with Pastor Jerry Brooks Jr. and Doug Berkel officiating. Burial will be at the Worley Cemetery at Bolt.

Pallbearers will be Jeff Brooks, Patrick Dickens, Doug Berkel, Larry Wright Jr., Kenny Hunt, and Greg Lane. Great-grandsons will serve as honorary pallbearers. 

The family would like to thank the staff of Sunbridge Pine Lodge Care Center, for their outstanding care of our Dear Mother.

Ada Greene Dillon

WAYSIDE — Ada Greene Dillon, 102, of Wayside, W.Va., passed away Tuesday evening, September 17, 2013, at her home, just eight days prior to 103rd birthday. 

She was born at Wayside, Sept. 25, 1910, a daughter of the late Russell Ashby and Ettie Mae Thomas Greene.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Mark H. Dillon; son-in-law, Clyde Barker; daughter-in-law, Carol Dillon; grandson, Jim (J. J.) Jackson. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family, which included four brothers, Roy, Guy, Carl and Russell Greene, and four sisters, Pauline Lively, Hattie Monroe, Phyllis Turner and Beatrice Meadows.

Mrs. Dillon was a homemaker, a member of the Flint Chapel Baptist Church at Creamery and a member of the American Baptist Women’s Ministry. 

Surviving are a son, Howard Mark Dillon of Lynchburg, Va.; two daughters, Wanda L. Belcher and her husband, Jim, of Summersville, Rita M. Barker of Wayside. Grandchildren, Becky Case, Debby Jackson, Mark Dillon, Terri Waters and husband, Mike, Ann Warner and husband Jerry; Great-Grandchildren, Matthew Case, Angie Johnson and husband, Dave, Amanda Workman and husband, Eric, Chad Dillon, Nicholas Dillon, Spencer Waters, Mary Elizabeth and husband Jack; Great-Great-Grandchildren, T.J., Audrey and Wyatt Johnson, Ava and Acen Workman. Sister-in-law, Irene Greene, very special friend Marrianne Blakeslee and her husband, Jon; devoted caregivers, Emogene Huffman, Mabel Bennett and Marlene Cook; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services will be held 2 p.m. Friday, September 20, 2013, at the Groves Funeral Home Chapel in Union, with Rev. Jim Anderson, Rev. Bill Monroe and Rev. Paul Monroe officiating. Burial will follow at the Campground Cemetery at Creamery.

Samuel Medford Dodrill

CRAIGSVILLE — Samuel Medford Dodrill, 86, of Craigsville, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 18, 2013.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 21, at Waters Funeral Chapel in Summersville with Pastor Linn Schiefer officiating. Burial will follow in the Beulah Baptist Cemetery at Muddlety. Friends may call from 6 until 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

William Dwight ‘Bill’ Goodwin

THURMOND, N.C. — William Dwight “Bill” Goodwin, 58, of Thurmond, formerly of Daniels, passed away Tuesday, September 17, at Carolina Medical Center in Charlotte, N.C., after a long illness.

Born November 11, 1954, in Bud, he was the son of the late Luther and Maggie Lester Goodwin.

Bill was a 1973 graduate of Herndon High School and began his working career as a nuclear welder at Newport News Ship and Drydock Company where he proudly participated in the construction of the Nimitz and Eisenhower aircraft carriers.

Bill was a self-educated electrical engineer at US Steel’s Pinnacle mining operations from 1979 until he became disabled in 2008. His thirst for knowledge was exceeded only by his talent for finding solutions. He was very highly recognized and respected in his field and always pleased to share his experience and knowledge with anyone who cared to learn.

After his forced retirement Bill enjoyed traveling with members of his family, touring the country from coast to coast. He enjoyed the wonders of nature and loved to explore the nation’s history.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Howard Ray Goodwin.

He is survived by his wife Kimberly Cooper Goodwin and two sons, Russell and wife Tammie of Hickory, N.C., Phillip and wife Jamie of Statesville, N.C., and one stepdaughter, Bridgette Cooper of McLean, Va.

Bill adored his three grandchildren, Presli, Piper and William. He was anticipating a fourth grandchild in October.

Also left to cherish his memory are eight brothers and sisters as well as their spouses. Dwaine and wife Glenda of Kingsport, Tenn., Earl and wife Sandra of Princeton, Alma Avizenis of Austin, Texas, Cathy Hartley and husband Clyde of Spanishburg, Jeanne Turner and husband Bob of Mooresville, N.C., Teresa Lawson and husband Gerald of Moore, S.C., Tracy and wife Jennifer of Huntsville, Ala., and Commander Travis Goodwin, USN Ret., and wife Carla of Fairview Heights, Ill., and by his adopted sister/cousin Charlotte Marie Moore Hall and husband Buck of Ennice, N.C.

Bill was especially proud to be called “second father” to his protégé and favorite student, Michelle Stevenson Quinn.

A funeral service will be held 3 p.m. Saturday, September 21, 2013, from the Burns Wornal Chapel of the Memorial Funeral Directory on Athens Road in Princeton with Rev. Randall Topping officiating. Burial will follow in Roselawn Memorial Gardens, Princeton. The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until the service hour at the funeral home.

Delbert Thomas Lewis

OAK HILL — Delbert Thomas Lewis, 84, of Oak Hill, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, September 18, 2013, at Bowers Hospice House in Beckley.

Born May 27, 1929, at Witcher’s Creek, W.Va., he was the son of the late Thomas Jefferson and Della White Lewis.

He was a retired concrete worker for Charleston Construction and was a member of the I.U.C.E. Local in Charleston.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Grace Bell Smith Lewis, and a nephew, Jack Lewis Jr.

Survivors include one brother, Jack Lewis of Gulfport, Fla.; two sisters, Gladys Gray and husband, Eugene, of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Betty Keffer of Oak Hill; five sisters-in-law, three brothers-in-law; nine nieces, 13 nephews and several great-nieces and nephews.

Graveside rites and committal service will be on Saturday, September 21, 2013, at 11 a.m. at Kincaid Cemetery in Kincaid, with Pastor Debbie Blevins Minor officiating. Burial will follow.

Visitation will be held at Tyree Funeral Home, Oak Hill, on Saturday, September 21, 2013, from 9:30 a.m. to 10:20 a.m.

James Lowell Rose

RONCEVERTE — James Lowell Rose, age 76, of Ronceverte, passed away Thursday, Sept. 19, 2013, at the Greenbrier Valley Medical Center.

Born on April 2, 1937, he was the son of the late James Henry Rose and Goldie Marie Barb.

Mr. Rose was a retired construction business owner. He was a longtime member of the Masonic Lodge, Shriners and Gideon’s. He was a faithful member and longtime Sunday School Superintendent at the Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church.

Other than his parents Jim was preceded in death by his wife of 47 years, Betty Jane Kennedy Rose. Parental grandparents, Lowell and Pearl Ramsey Rose of Fort Spring, who primarily raised him, and his sister, Patricia Rose Nichols.

Surviving are his two sons, J.K. Rose and wife, Ina, Lowell C. Rose and wife Diane, and daughter, Kathy M. Legg and husband, Ron. Brothers William C. Rose of Ronceverte, Rick Butuyan and wife, Mary Ann, of Ronceverte and David Barb of Lewisburg; sisters, Maria Hacthman of Sweet Springs, Donna Butuyan of Tuckwilla, Wash., and Cindy Bridges of Tennessee; grandchildren: James D. Rose and wife Sara, Terry Gwinn, Jessie Lynn Rose and Catlin Brook Rose. Special thanks to The Seasons and his two caregivers, Carol Winebrimmer and Phyllis Johnson.

Tom Small Sr.

Tom Small, Sr., 70 years old, of Prosperity, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, September 18, 2013.

He was born December 20, 1942, the son of Flossie Boswell and Tommy Small.

Those that are blessed to carry on his love and memory are the wonderful mother of his five children, Peggy Small; his son, Tommy and wife, Beth, with their two children, Tyler and Emily; his daughters, Debbie Alexander and husband, Calvin, along with their daughter, Faith, Teresa Stewart, and her two sons, Brad and Justin and wife, Terri, Kim Morris and husband, Scott, and her son, Thomas Danley and wife, Michelle, Susan Miller and husband, Shannon, and their two sons, Brett and Cohen; also his great-grandchildren, Sawyer, Ryleigh, Braxton, and Blake.

His love of music inspired him to write and record two gospel records. He enjoyed the years he spent in the boxing business with his son, Tommy, and many others. He was always a very involved Dad and Paw Paw. Spending time with his close family was one of his greatest joys.

Services to celebrate the life of Tom Small Sr. will be held at 12 noon Saturday, September 21, 2013, at Blue Ridge Funeral Home, 5251 Robert C. Byrd Drive, Beckley, with Pastor Donnie Kelly officiating. Following the services he will be laid to rest at Sunset Memorial Park, Beckley.

Grandsons and sons-in-law will serve as pallbearers.

Friends may gather with the family from 11 a.m. until time of the service Saturday at the funeral home.

Jonathan Edward White Jr.

Jonathan Edward White Jr. was called home Saturday, September 14, 2013, following a sudden illness.

He was born March 8, 1969, in Frankfurt, West Germany, and was preceded in the passing of his beloved mother Delores Ann White, grandparents Jack and Betty Bolen and Hansel and Sophie White. 

Jon was a loving husband to his high school sweetheart Rachel for 26 years and was a devoted father to his daughter Ashley. Being one who dearly loved the outdoors, he was an avid hunter, enjoyed 4-wheeling with his friends and found his passion as a master Window Tinter. With pride, Jon served in the U.S. Army.

Those left behind to cherish and carry on his memory are his loving wife Rachel Faye White, a loving daughter Ashley Ann White, his father Jonathan Edward White Sr., a brother Joseph Heath White and numerous family and friends. Jon will be forever loved by all and sadly missed.

Funeral Services will be conducted at the Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel in Beckley on Sunday, September 22, 2013, at 2 p.m. with Rev. Danny Ray Bowman officiating.  Friends and family may visit with the immediate family at exactly 1 p.m. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Park in Beckley.

Phyllis Jean Hillman Wickline

LEWISBURG — Phyllis Jean Hillman Wickline, 78, of Lewisburg, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 18, 2013, at St. Mary’s Medical Center in Huntington, W.Va.

Phyllis was the daughter of the late Rev. Dr. Carden A. Hillman and Talma Kinzie Carper Hillman, born Feb. 2, 1935, in Princeton, W.Va.

She was a graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School in Beckley, class of 1952, and of West Virginia Wesleyan College in Buckhannon, W.Va., class of 1956.

A social worker by profession prior to  marriage, Phyllis worked with the West Virginia Children’s Home Society in Charleston and Board of Child Care of the United Methodist Church in Baltimore, Md.

Phyllis leaves behind her loving husband of 50 years, Rev. BillyReed Wickline; daughters, Lisa Michele (Ed) Wildman of Buckhannon, W.Va., and Karen Renee (Tim) Steens of Huntington, W.Va.; sister, Corrina (Hugh) Gackle of Grayslake, Ill., and brother, Norman (Priscilla) Hillman of Litchfield, Conn.

Affectionately known as “Gigi,” Phyllis was a proud and devoted grandmother to her grandchildren: Cardyn Elizabeth Wildman, Graham Mathew Stevens, Alexander Brooks Stevens and Chelsea Stevens (Chad) Hall.

Visitation will be from 1 to 3 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 22, 2013, at Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home in Lewisburg. A celebration of life will follow at 3:30 p.m. at the Old Stone Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Dr. Dexter Taylor officiating. Burial will follow in the Carmel Cemetery, Gap Mills, W.Va.

Ezra Calvin Williams

Calvin Williams, 88, of Beckley, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, September 18, 2013, at the Raleigh General Hospital, Beckley, after a short illness.

Calvin was born November 9, 1924, at Kilsyth, W.Va., a son of the late George A. and Sadie Ollie Williams.

Calvin worked for 39 years mining coal, he was active in all things with the Union, he was financial secretary of Local Union 1123 for over 30 years. He was Secretary of Marfork Burial Fund.

Calvin was founder, member and deacon of The Full Gospel Community Church.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, George, Rexall, Manuel and Jack; four sisters, Donnie, Velva, Alma and Zona; and his son, Calvin Alfred Williams.

Those left to cherish his memory include his loving wife of 47 years, Kathyrn Jean Stewart Williams; children: Ronnie Gene “Lyndia,” Brenda Lou “Richard,” Raymond Michael “Pam,” Deanna Doris, Randall Eugene and Terry Lee “Pat”; 21 grandchildren, 60 great-grandchildren, and seven great-great-grandchildren.

Service  will be 1 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 22, 2013, at the Full Gospel Community Church at Glen Daniel, with Pastor Kenneth Ayers officiating. Singers will be Three Generations.

Burial will follow in Miller Cemetery at Rock Creek.
