Millie Garnet Meadows Vest
Millie Garnet Meadows Vest, age 90, of Blue Jay, was carried away to Heaven on the wings of angels on Thursday, July 18, 2013, at 2:20 p.m. in the afternoon from the Doug and Lucy Bowers Hospice House in Beckley. Her loving family surrounded her as she changed worlds peacefully.
Born October 13, 1922, Millie was the daughter of Luther and Ella Lilly Meadows. Raised in Beckley, Millie was the tenth of twelve siblings. Her mother passed away when Millie was 13, and her father passed shortly afterward. At her young age, Millie helped care for her younger siblings and at times lived with her sisters in their homes until she married her soul mate, the late Robert W. (Bob) Vest, on January 9, 1945. They made their home first in Hinton; then settled in Blue Jay, where they raised their family. They were blessed with four children: Bob, Randy, Ronnie, and Kathy.
Millie was a loving homemaker, and worked in the kitchen at Pinecrest Hospital prior to her marriage.
Millie is preceded in death by her loving husband Bob in 1997; her parents Luther and Ella, grandson Mark, and siblings Lula, Maude, Taff, Pearl, Katherine, Kenneth, Goldie, Jennings, James, and Junior.
Her loving memory will be cherished by her children and their spouses: Robert D. (Bob) Vest and wife Barbara of Shady Spring, Randall K. Vest and wife Donna of Beaver, Ronald K. Vest and wife Becky of Ripley, and Kathy L. Vest Jeffords and husband Larry of Blue Jay; eleven grandchildren; eighteen great-grandchildren; a special brother whom she adored, Frank Meadows of Warren, Michigan; numerous nieces and nephews; a host of extended family and friends who love her dearly; and a special friend, Dorothy Ayers of Beckley.
Millie, affectionately known as “Granny,” loved to make people laugh. You always felt better after visiting with her than you did when you came, because she was sure to share her good sense of humor. Her family truly was her pride and joy. Her children and grandchildren treasure many happy memories of “Sunday dinners at Granny’s house.” She poured out her love on her family, and loved to cook, bake, and can special treats for them. She loved the Lord Jesus with all her heart, and served Him faithfully for many years, after giving her heart to Him during a tent revival in the 1940s. She leaves the legacy of being a “prayer warrior,” and had countless testimonies of answered prayers. She attended Spoken Word Tabernacle at Beaver.
Proverbs 31:28 “Her children arise up, and call her blessed.”
Services will be held at the Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home Shady Spring Chapel on Sunday, July 21, 2013, at 1 p.m. with Rev. Larry Jeffords and Rev. Roy Shrewsbury officiating. Millie will be laid to rest next to her husband Bob at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Garden of Peace at Prosperity.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 6 to 9 p.m. on Saturday.
Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
The family extends a heartfelt thank you to those who helped give Granny special loving care during her last few months: her daughter Kathy who was her primary caregiver, Janie Morris, Drema Roach, Cindy Bair, Patty Gravely, and nieces Maxine Crews, Norma Hylton, and Debbie Hambrick. Also, to Dr. Jenny and the wonderful staff of the Bowers Hospice House in Beckley; words cannot express our deepest appreciation for your care and support.
