Shirley Bailey

Shirley Bailey, of Beckley, WV, passed away on Wednesday, April 18, 2012, at her home. She was preceded in death by her parents, George Bailey and Celia Hill Bailey, by a brother Ira Bailey, and by a sister Gerry Bailey.

Shirley is survived by two sisters, Jean Hall of Anna, Texas, and Brenda Vonkaenel of Dover, Ohio. Three brothers, Roger Bailey of Sullivan Road, Glen Morgan, Rick Bailey of Lynchburg, Virginia, and Jim Bailey of Flatwoods, Kentucky.

Shirley led a very prosperous life full of laughter and wit in spite of her long and courageous battle with cancer. Her words, “I owned it, I learned it, I fought it, but had to embrace it. I became very independent of the circumstances.”

Shirley contributes her long survival of this disease to loved ones, family and friends. For that she was very grateful. She will always be remembered for her devotion to family and friends and for her love of life. She will be sadly missed by her family and friends and her very special “shihtzu” dog Sparky who was so bonded to her. Special thanks to Dr. Michael Webb and Robin Cox of Beckley, and Dr. Peyton Taylor of Charlottesville, Virginia.

“Her life has been full and she savored much — Good Friends, Good Times, A loved one’s touch; Perhaps time here seems all too brief — But request we do not lengthen our pain with undue grief.”

Shirley was a retired office manager at Raleigh General Hospital, was of the Methodist faith, and was a member of the Women of the Moose.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held for Shirley Bailey on Sunday, April 22, 2012, at the Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel in Beckley at 1 p.m. with Rev. Betty Lusk officiating.
