Willa Dean Kenney Barnett

RICHWOOD — Willa Dean Kenney Barnett, 65, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2013.

Graveside service and burial will be 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 15, 2013, in the Fields Cemetery at Nettie, with the Rev. Tim Skaggs officiating.

Kathy Lynn Brewer

On February 9th, 2013, our dear mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, Kathy Lynn Brewer, 62, of Sophia, lost her courageous battle of 6 years but earned her wings and Heaven gained an angel.

Born February 13, 1950, at Tams, W.Va., to the late William Gordon Cook and the late Frances Louise Gibson Cook.

Kathy enjoyed singing and playing the piano, shopping, traveling to Tennessee but most of all spending time with her precious family and grandchildren. She was a member of the Sophia Church of God, and was an Insurance Agent at Redden Wood and Associates in Bradley.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Frances E. Cook.

Those left to cherish her precious memory include her brother, Doug Cook and wife, Bev of Midway; three daughters, Leah Pierce and husband, George of Sophia, Jayme Brewer and companion, Roy Wills of Coal City, and Amber Brewer of Crab Orchard; four grandchildren, Bree Tyree, Joseph Tyree, Lydia Wills, and Jayda Lynn Wills; step granddaughter, Lexy Pierce; two special cousins, Pam Binion and Linda Mills; a special niece, Lisa Cook Edwards; several nieces, nephews, and a host of friends.

Services to celebrate the life of Kathy Lynn Brewer will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, February 16, 2013, at Williams-Blue Ridge Funeral Home, 101 1st Street, Sophia, with Rev. F.D. Sexton officiating. Following the services Kathy will be laid to rest at Hot Coal Cemetery, Sophia.

George Pierce, Roy Wills, Ernie Edwards, Christopher Edwards, Nicholas Edwards, and E. Edwards will be serving as pallbearers.

Friends may gather with the family from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Thomas J. Conner

INDIANAPOLIS, IND. — Thomas J. Conner, 69, of Indianapolis, formerly of Stanaford, died Tuesday, February 12, 2013, in Indianapolis after a short illness.

Born in Piney View, W.Va. on April 9, 1943, he was a son of the late Dale Paul Conner and Mary Vonnetta (Von) McDaniel Conner, of Stanaford, who survives.

Other than his mother, survivors include his wife of 49 years, Mary Lou Taylor Conner of Indianapolis; sons Bob (Kelli) of Indianapolis and Tommy (Jodi) of Cincinnati, Ohio,  grandsons Brandon and Nick and granddaughters Maryne and Lucy; two brothers, Carl Willard "Bobby" (Yolanda) Conner of Carson, Calif. and James (Helen) Conner, Goose Creek, S.C. and a sister, Phyllis (George) Voultsides of Bishopville, Md., as well as numerous nephews, nieces and cousins. 

He was also preceded in death by a brother Glennis Conner.

A Memorial Service will be held in Indianapolis, with arrangements pending at Flanner & Buchanan Funeral Center, with burial in Washington Park East Cemetery.

The family requests contributions be made to the American Cancer Society.



Betty Jewell Wright McKinney Davis

Betty Jewell Wright McKinney Davis, 81, of Pineville, passed away Monday, February 11, 2013 in Bluefield Regional Medical Center.

Born September 8, 1931, in Grundy, Va., she was the daughter of the late Hobert (HK) McKinley Wright and Ethel Margret Walden Wright.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her first husband, Kesley P. McKinney and her second husband, Frank Davis Jr.; a grandson, Jeremy Paul Fitch; three brothers, Billy Wright, Buddy Wright and Johnathan Wright; two sisters, Ruth Shultz and Shirley Wright and a nephew, Barry Hensley.

Jewell was a member of The Church of the Nazarene for 53 years. She attended school at the Elk Lick Grade School and Oceana High School. Her very first job was at the Indiana State Soldiers Home as a Nurse’s Aide in Lafayette, Indiana. She was employed by the Wyoming County Board of Education as a cook at the Pineville Grade School and retired after 31 years of service. She loved collecting cookbooks.

Survivors include her daughters; Deanna Sue Stafford of Elkin, NC and Patricia Jewell Fitch and her husband, Paul, of Pineville, WV; three brothers; Bobby Wright and his wife Flowetta, of Lynco, WV; Wayne Wright and his wife Kay, of Nimitz, WV; and Keith Wright of Independence, VA; two sisters; Faye Walker and her husband Marvin of Pineville, WV and Carol Hensley and her husband Robert of Mt. Airy, NC; three grandchildren; Kellie Collins and her husband, Eric of State Road, NC; Landon Stafford and his wife, Stephanie of East Bend, NC and Joshua Fitch of Pineville, WV; and four great-grandchildren, Brooke and Brittany Collins, both of State Road, NC, Mason Stafford of East Bend , and Kassidy Reynolds of Boonville, NC.

She is also survived by several nieces and nephews and very special friends, Virginia Cook and Billie Hannan.

A celebration of Jewell’s life will be at 1 p.m., Thursday, February 14, 2013, in the Calfee Funeral Service Chapel with Pastor Matthew Mitchell officiating.  The family will receive friends from noon until the time of the service.

Burial will follow at Palm Memorial Gardens, Matheny.

Robert “Bob” Lee Gunther, 77, of Mabscott, died Monday, Feb. 11th, 2013, at the Raleigh General Hospital following a long illness.

Demetra Trenice Lawson

FREDERICK, Md. — Demetra Trenice Lawson, 38, of Frederick, formerly of Beckley and

Morgantown, W.Va., died Saturday, February 9, 2013.

Born August 5, 1974, in Beckley, she was the only daughter of Mr. Jessie Lawson of Beckley, and Ms. Yvonne Lawson of Columbia, S.C.

Demetra received her Master’s degree in Community Health Education from West Virginia University and was a Senior Program Manager. She accepted Christ as her Savior at a young age and was baptized at Salvation Praise Ministries in Morgantown, W.Va. and worshiped her final days at Jackson Chapel in Frederick, Md.

She was preceded in death by her aunt Sandra Bibbs.

In addition to her parents, those left to cherish her memories are her son, Pharaoh Lawson, and daughters, Nyla and Jahda Lawson of  Frederick, Md.; paternal grandmother, Annie Gwinn and maternal grandmother, Marguerite Bush of Beckley; husband, Robert Dixon; mother-in-law, Bertha Dixon, two special sisters, Letitia Johnson-Arnold of Fayetteville, N.C. and Larissa Mallard of Stafford, Va., and host of aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, other relatives, friends and sorority sisters.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, February 16, 2013, at Heart of God Ministries, 1703 South Kanawha St., Beckley, with Bishops David Allen and Fred T. Simms  officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Prosperity.

Friends may call one hour prior to the services at the church.

Devon Brooke Mayes

Devon Brooke Mayes of Beckley, went to Heaven Saturday, February 9, 2013. May you find comfort in the arms of Angels.

This tiny someone touched our hearts and left our lives somehow changed forever ... especially the hearts of her parents Timothy Floyd Mayes Jr. and Crystal Rene Prince-Walker; her grandparents Bruce and Ginger Prince of Oak Hill, and Debbie Leggett of Beckley; her great grandmothers Janet Maynard of Pineville and Kathleen Leggett of Cleveland Ohio; an uncle Chad Vigilante of Beckley; an aunt Nicole Prince of Oak Hill; one sister Jordan Taylor Walker of Oak Hill; and cousin London Swar of Oak Hill.

A graveside service in High Lawn Memorial Park at The Garden of The Last Supper, 1435 E. Main Street, Oak Hill, will be held 2 p.m. Thursday with Rev. Pete Lokant officiating.

Wilma McGraw, age 79, of Stanaford, passed away Wednesday, February 13, 2013, at Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital.

Jackie Dale Meadows, 66, a native of Logan, passed away Tuesday, February 12, 2013.

Initial funeral service will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, February 13, 2013, at Goldfinch Funeral Home, Beach Chapel. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. prior to the service. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, February 15, 2013, at Highland Cemetery at Godby, with Military Graveside Rites. Nancy Sparks Peake Stewart

CUMMING, Ga. — Nancy Sparks Peake Stewart, 62, of Cumming, Ga., formerly of Tennessee, passed away on Saturday, February 9, 2013, after battling numerous illnesses for several years.

Nancy was an avid traveler, baker, painter and she loved spending time with her grandsons, Bret and Porter. Always the social butterfly, she never met a stranger. In her younger years, Nancy appeared in off Broadway plays and later continued acting in community theater.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Herman and Hazel Sparks.

Survivors include her beloved daughter and son-in-law, Beth and Tim Buursema of Cumming, Ga.; grandsons, Bret and Porter Buursema of Cumming; sister and brother-in-law, Susan and Larry Burdette of Beckley; nephew and wife, Rob and Kim Leeber also of Beckley, and many other loving relatives and friends.

Memorial services were held Tuesday, February 12, 2013 at 6 p.m. at Cumming First United Methodist Church with Rev. John Cromartie and Rev. Kathie Stasko officiating.

PENCE SPRINGS — Marguerite DiBetta Trueman, 88, of Pence Springs, formerly of New Orleans, La., passed away Tuesday, February 12, 2013.

Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, February 16, 2013, at the Johnson Memorial United Methodist Church in Alderson, with Reverend Rick Duncan officiating. Entombment will follow in Louisiana at a later date.

David Blane Williams

David Blane Williams, age 60, of Cool Ridge, passed away on Tuesday, February 12, 2013, at Raleigh General Hospital, following a sudden illness.

Born May 6, 1952, in Williamson, to Clayton Williams of Beckley and the late Geneva Reed Williams.

David was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting and fishing. He loved to watch West Virginia Mountaineer football. He also served our country in the United States Marine Corps.

Those surviving include his wife, Mrs. Sharon Williams, at home; sons, Shaun Nicholas William, of Cool Ridge, and Joshua Scott Williams, wife Jessica, and their daughter, Raelynn Grace, of Daniels; brother, Melvin Williams and wife Linda of Beckley; sister, Barbara French and husband David of Daniels; niece, Stephanie Woodrum and husband Gene of Columbia, S.C., and also numerous other nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Friday, February 15, 2013, at the Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Chapel in Beckley, with the Rev. Monsignor Sammuel L. Sacus officiating. Interment will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens in Prosperity.

Visitation will be held the same morning from 10 to 11 a.m. at the funeral chapel.

Naomi Kay Wood

Naomi Kay Wood, age 64, of Mabscott, passed away on Monday, February 11, 2013, after a long illness.

Born April 11, 1948 in Comfort, W.Va., to the late Herl and Josie Adkins.

Naomi was a homemaker and enjoyed being outdoors camping and fishing. She also attended Glen White Church of God.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded her in death by her husband, Charles Douglas Wood; a son, Brian Wood; and a grandson, Charles David Wood.

Those surviving include her son Melvin Wood and wife Tasha of Coal City and her daughter Carrie from Mabscott; several brothers, sisters, and grandchildren.

Services will be conducted on 2 p.m. on Friday, February 15, 2013, at Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Chapel in Beckley with Rev. Jerry Tyree officiating. Interment will follow at Hot Coal Cemetery in Sophia.

Visitation will be held on Thursday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral chapel.
