ROCKY POINT, N.C. — Harry Duane Poling, 90, of Rocky Point, N.C., formerly of Beaver, W.Va., died Friday, Jan. 18, 2013.
Celebration of life will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 22, at Quinn-McGowen Funeral Home in Burgaw, N.C.

Alvin D. Sweeney
PALM BAY, Fla. — Alvin D. Sweeney, 97, passed away January 16th, 2013, at Anchor Nursing home in Palm Bay, Florida.
Alvin was born July 11, 1915, to L.D. and Esta (Williams) Sweeney, in Ghent, West Virginia, the second of five children.
He married Dorothy J. Moore, February 6, 1944, in Ft. Wayne, Indiana. She preceded him in death October 7, 2007. He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Lelia (Ross) Cottle, and Joy (Nathan) Hale.
Alvin attended school in Ghent and graduated from Shady Spring High School. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1939, which later became the U.S. Air Force, retiring in 1962. Alvin and Dorothy returned to Ghent where he served as Post Master for many years. He was instrumental in establishing the Cool Ridge-Flat Top Public Service District in Raleigh County in 1966 for obtaining a community water system for Ghent, Cool Ridge, and Flat Top.
Alvin is survived by his sister, Vera (Roy) Applegate of Ghent; brother, Lonnie (Sarah) of Beckley; son, Michael (Toni) of Palm Bay, Florida; daughter, Leeann Thacker; and grandsons, Michael II, Christopher, Charles, and Delano.
A Military graveside service was held at Fountainhead Memorial Funeral Home, Palm Bay, Florida.
