Opal Wanda Bearfield

WHITESVILLE — Opal Wanda Bearfield of Whitesville, WV, went home to be with the Lord on January 17, 2013, at CAMC Memorial Division Hospital, Charleston, WV, after a long illness.

She was born May 17, 1935, at Garrison, WV, to the late Ray Holstein and Bessie Faye Canterbury.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Robert Lee Bearfield; a daughter, Joann Venoy.

She is survived by two daughters, Ramona McFalls and Doug of Whitesville, WV, and Delores Ivenhoe and David of Virginia; five sons: Randy Bearfield and Roberta of Seth, Chester Bearfield and Ericka, Jesse Bearfield and Betty, Jerry Bearfield and Gladys all of  Whitesville, WV, Robert Bearfield and Amanda of North Carolina; 20 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Monday afternoon, January 21, 2013, at 1 o’clock in the Armstrong Funeral Home, Whitesville, WV, with the Rev. Rick Perry and Pastor June Ferrell. Interment will be in Pineview Cemetery, Orgas, WV. Pallbearers: Tommy, John, Randy, Jerry, David, Kevin and Robbie. The singers will be Special Guests.

Visitation will be Monday 2 hours before the service at the funeral home.

RICHWOOD — Lula Noria Faulkner, 92, of Richwood, passed away Friday, Jan. 18, 2013.

Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 21, in Simons-Coleman Funeral Home, Richwood, with Pastor Tim Deal officiating. Interment will be in Richwood Cemetery, Richwood. Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 21, in the funeral home.

LOGAN — Robert G. “Bobby” Gallion, 79, of Logan died Friday, Jan. 18, 2013.

HINTON — Elaine Garten, 85 of Hinton died Friday, Jan. 18, 2013.

Ellis Grady Goodwin

COLUMBUS, Ga. — Our buddy Ellis Grady Goodwin, of Columbus, Georgia, received his angel wings on Friday, January 18th, 2013, at Columbus Hospice House. Before moving to Columbus, Georgia, in June 2006, he lived in Beckley and Glen White.

Born on January 28th, 1953, in Beckley, West Virginia, he was the son of the late Grady Goodwin and Helen Witt Goodwin.

Ellis was a wonderful son, brother, uncle and buddy.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Harold Goodwin.

Those left to cherish his memory include a sister, Caralene McPeake and husband Jackie of Beckley; sister Arlene Goodwin of Columbus, Ga.; sister Gena Farley of Columbus, Ga.; brother Ronald Goodwin and wife Betty of Beckley; niece Kim Brooks (Mark Muldrew) of Midland, Ga.; nephew Ron Goodwin (Rose) of Beckley; niece Elaine Sanda (Mike) of Columbus, Ga.; niece; Amy Job (Jeff) of Raleigh, NC.; great-nieces and great-nephews, Tommy Oakes, Kendra and Jeffrey Job, Christopher Goodwin and Casey Sanda; Jeannette Blevins of St. Clair Shores, Michigan; and his loyal dog Mary Jane.

Funeral services will be 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, January 22, 2013, in the Calfee Funeral Home Chapel. Entombment will follow in Sunset Memorial Park. Friends may visit with the family from 12:30 p.m. until service time Tuesday at the funeral home.

BELLROSE, N.Y. — Ms. Beatrice Martin, 69, of Bellrose, N.Y., formerly of Beckley, died Saturday, Jan. 12, 2013.

SPARTANBURG, S.C. — William George Masters, 61, of Spartanburg, S.C., died Monday, Jan. 14, 2013.

Graveside committal services with burial to follow will be at 2:15 p.m. Monday, Jan. 21, at Gethsemane Memorial Gardens, Pea Ridge Road, Oak Hill, with Pastor Ken Souder officiating. Denise E. Nary

Denise Elaine Nary of Beckley died Sunday, January 13th, 2013, at her home following a long illness. She was 50 years of age.

One of three children and the only daughter, Denise was born on March 22nd, 1962, at Portsmouth, Virginia. Denise leaves to cherish her memory her beloved father, Danny Nary of Mabscott and the late Shirley Elaine Ferguson Nary. In addition to her mother, Denise was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, David and Inez Nary, and maternal grandparents, Orville and Annamae Ferguson.

Denise is the dear sister of Danny Nary Jr. and his wife, Donna, of Beckley and David A. Nary of Surveyor; she was the sweet aunt of Ashley and Katie Nary of Beckley, Takayla Nary of Surveyor, and Jennifer Stone and her husband, Eric, of Russellville, Kentucky; and her companion, Tony Wright, survives also.

In keeping with her wishes Denise has been cremated. A Memorial Service to remember her life will be Sunday, January 20th, at 3 p.m. at the Melton Mortuary Chapel. Dr. Charles Bright will be officiating. The family will receive friends from 2 p.m. until the service hour.

Eugene Leroy Pitsenbarger

ALDERSON — Eugene Leroy Pitsenbarger, 83, of Alderson has gone home to be with the Lord. He passed peacefully on Thursday, January 17, 2013, at the home of his stepdaughter and son-in-law, Tammy and Kenneth Jarvis. His wife Marlene and little dog Abby remained by his side.

Eugene was born on June 30, 1929, in Marlinton, WV, to the late Henry Floyd and Eva Welch Pitsenbarger, and was preceded in death by his parents, his wife and mother of his children, Orphia Hoke Pitsenbarger; two sisters, Aretta Flack and Mary Pitsenbarger; four brothers, Arthur, David, Henry, and James.

He is survived by his wife, Marlene Burns Pitsenbarger of Alderson, WV; a friend on whom he could always depend, Jack Gadd of Alderson, WV; five children: Carolyn Ann Hernandez and husband Erwin of Chicago, IL, Lila Jean DelaRosa and husband Leo of Sugarland, TX, Michael Ray Pitsenbarger and wife Debbie of Texas City, TX, Ronald Lee Pitsenbarger and wife Lucy of Lithia, FL, and Debra Kay Kress and husband Jeff of Peekin, IL; three stepchildren, Debra Lynn Ballard and husband David of Alderson, WV, Tammy Wilson Jarvis and husband Kenneth of Sugar Grove, VA, Tommy Roger Wilson and wife Teresa of Covington, VA; his sister Bonnie Mae Martin and husband, Calvin, his brother Freddie and wife Mildred Pitsenbarger all from White Sulphur Springs, WV. He was blessed with 23 grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren.

Eugene was a Corporal in the U.S. Army and served during the Korean War. He was captured on December 1, 1950, and was detained at Camp Ch’ang Song. He remained a prisoner of war until his release on August 23, 1953. He returned home to White Sulphur Springs in September of 1953 and was honored for his service with a homecoming parade. He was a recipient of many medals of honor while serving our country. Eugene was a member of the VFW Post #6723, Alderson, WV.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, January 22, at 1 p.m. at the Fort Spring Missionary Baptist Church, Fort Spring, WV, with Pastor Jonathan Hunt officiating. Burial will follow immediately after the service at Adwell Cemetery near Ronceverte.

The family will receive friends on Monday, January 21, at Wallace and Wallace Funeral Home in Lewisburg, WV, from 6 to 8.

Pallbearers will be brothers in Christ from the Ft. Springs Missionary Baptist Church.

Alvin D. Sweeney

PALM BAY,  Fla. — Alvin D. Sweeney, 97, passed away January 16th, 2013, at Anchor Nursing home in Palm Bay, Florida.

Alvin was born July 11, 1915, to L.D. and Esta (Williams) Sweeney, in Ghent, West Virginia, the second of five children.

He married Dorothy J. Moore, February 6, 1944, in Ft. Wayne, Indiana. She preceded him in death October 7, 2007. He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Lelia (Ross) Cottle, and Joy (Nathan) Hale.

Alvin attended school in Ghent and graduated from Shady Spring High School. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1939, which later became the U.S. Air Force, retiring in 1962. Alvin and Dorothy returned to Ghent where he served as Post Master for many years. He was instrumental in establishing the Cool Ridge-Flat Top Public Service District in Raleigh County in 1966 for obtaining a community water system for Ghent, Cool Ridge, and Flat Top.

Alvin is survived by his sister, Vera (Roy) Applegate of Ghent; brother, Lonnie (Sarah) of Beckley; son, Michael (Toni) of Palm Bay, Florida; daughter, Leeann Thacker; and grandsons, Michael II, Christopher, Charles, and Delano.

A Military graveside service was held at Fountainhead Memorial Funeral Home, Palm Bay, Florida.
