Lettie Chafin Brescoach

WHITMAN — Lettie Chafin Brescoach, age 79, of Whitman, departed this life on January 1, 2013, at the home of her daughter and son-in-law.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete and Honaker Funeral Home is in charge of her services.

James William ‘Jimmy’ Furrow

PEMBERTON — James William Furrow, age 55 of Pemberton, passed away on Saturday,  December 29, 2012, at the Raleigh General Hospital in Beckley.

Born on July 12, 1957, in Welch, W.Va., he was the son of Velma Ruth Barnes Furrow Douglas of Pemberton and the late Jesse Louis Furrow Jr.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Jackie Edward Furrow and Robert Lee Douglas. He was also preceded in death by his step father Roy J. Douglas, whom he loved dearly.  

Jimmy was a former coal miner, and was a retired fireman for the City of Sophia Fire Department, the Coal City Volunteer Fire Department, and helped  begin the Handley Fire Department.  He served for a brief period on the Army National Guard.

His survivors include his wife of 17 years, Sandra Cole Furrow, his mother, Velma Ruth Furrow Douglas of Pemberton, three sisters, Linda Acord and her husband Dallas of Bolt,  Judy Pennington and her husband Bill of Caycee, SC, and Pat Piercy and her husband Roberk of Beckley. Two step brothers, Roy Douglas of Maple Fork, and Danny Douglas of Stanfield, NC. A step sister, Polly Middleton of Monroe, Michigan. Many nieces and nephews, and numerous great nieces and nephews also survive.

Jimmy loved his family and he had a great passion as a firefighter and as a first responder due to his deep care and concern for others. Jimmy attended the Church of God at Coal City.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel in Beckley, on Friday, January 4, 2013 at 1 p.m., with Bishop Clarence Lee officiating.   Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens at Prosperity.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 11 a.m. until service time on Friday.

Family members and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Rev. Earl H. Hungate

Reverend Earl H. Hungate, born April 21, 1934, of Lakeland, Fla., passed to his heavenly reward on December 30, 2012, at the age of 78.

He was a long time ordained minister in the Church of God of Cleveland, Tenn., having served the church organization in multiple capacities of leadership for over 44 years. Revered Hungate served as a pastor, chancellor, evangelism director, and state overseer, and served on numerous state councils throughout his career. Throughout his many years of ministry he served in multiple states to include, Florida, Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, Virginia, and West Virginia.  He traveled on several mission trips abroad to include Southeast Asia and the Caribbean. He enjoyed hunting, outdoor activities, and spending quality time with family and friends.

Reverend Hungate is survived by his loving and dedicated wife of 57 years, Sena Marenko Hungate; daughter, Sharilyn Hungate Boykin and her husband Reverend Dwayne Boykin; son, Reverend Vincent E. Hungate and his wife Allison Smith Hungate. Reverend Hungate had 3 grandchildren, Brooks Hungate, McKenzie Hungate, and Madison Hungate.  He is the son of the late Ira Hobart Hungate and Lake Evelyn Cole Hungate of Coal City, W.Va.  He is also survived by two brothers, Dale Edward Hungate and his wife Lorraine of Athens, W.Va., and Wayne D. Hungate and his wife Carol of Boise, Idaho.  He is preceded in death by a brother, Gene Herndon Hungate and his wife Ann, who continues to live in Dayton, Ohio.

Services will be held on Thursday, January 3, 2013 at the Abundant Life Church of God at 11:30 a.m. Viewing will commence at 10 a.m. at the church. Friends and guests are invited to attend his home-going celebration. Flowers can be sent to the Abundant Life Church of God. Nella M. Johnson

RICHMOND, Va. — Nella M. Johnson, 75, of Richmond, passed away on Sunday, December 30, 2012.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Boyd Bonds and Mary Combs Bonds; her second husband, Basil Wilkerson; brother, Billy Harve Bonds; twin sister, Stella Baldwin; sister, Kay Ann Brown.

Mrs. Johnson is survived by her husband, Charles Johnson; sons, James Cadran, Michael Cadran (Kathy), Mitchell Cadran (Cherrie), and Timothy Cadran; grandchildren, Christine, Amanda, Jamie, Brandon; brother, Robert Bonds; sisters, Brenda Brown and Kathy Bonds.  Family will receive friends on Thursday, January 3, 2013 from 6 to 8 p.m. at J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home, Chester Chapel.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, January 4, 2012 at 1:30 p.m. also at the funeral home. Interment to immediately follow in Sunset Memorial Park.

Edna Kidwell, age 86, of Beckley, W.Va., passed away on Tuesday January 1, 2013, at the Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital following a long illness.

OCEANA — Edith Elzoria Dancy Lusk, 66, of Oceana, W.Va., passed away on Sunday December 30, 2012.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday January 4, 2013, in the Chapel of Stafford Family Funeral Home with Rev. Ron Harvey officiating.

Burial will follow in the Kopperston Community Cemetery, Kopperston, W.Va.

Jane Bailey McKinney

PINEVILLE — Jane Bailey McKinney, 59, of Pineville, passed away Saturday, December 29, 2012.

Born April 13, 1953, in Pineville, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Wilma Parks and Ray H. Bailey.

She was a 1971 graduate of Pineville High School and received her Nursing Education at the Wyoming Career and Technical Center. Jane was a former nurse and was employed at Wyoming General Hospital, and Welch Emergency Hospital in the Intensive Care Units and Trauma Transfer.  Jane enjoyed music, computers and Facebook. She was a channel operator with Microsoft server in Internet Relay Chat. She also enjoyed playing the guitar and performed in numerous counties.

Those left to cherish her memory are her husband of 31 years, Robert McKinney; a daughter, Sarah McKinney of Pineville; a brother, Dennis F. “Turk” Bailey of Pineville; brothers-in-law, Pat McKinney and wife, Laura of Pineville and Danny and wife, Marcia of Pineville; nieces and nephews, Scott McKinney, Craig and Brad Bailey, Carmen McKinney, Morgan McKinney, and Stuart McKinney.

A memorial gathering will be held 7-9 p.m., Wednesday, January 2, 2013, at Calfee Funeral Service Chapel, Pineville.

RONCEVERTE — Billy Clark Ramsey, 65, of Ronceverte, passed away December 31, 2013.

RAINELLE — James D. “JD” Shaver Jr., 66, of Rainelle, passed away Sunday, December 30, 2012.

Margaret Nell Justice Smith

Margaret Nell Justice Smith, 93, of Beckley, W.Va., died on Monday, December 31, 2012, at Raleigh General Hospital in Beckley, W.Va.

Born June 23, 1919, at Matoaka, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Arthur and Ella Bowman Justice.

She was a homemaker.

Mrs. Smith was a member of the New Prospect Baptist Church, Sweeneysburg.

Her husband, Till John Smith preceded her in death on January 17, 1991.

Survivors include sons Larry Smith of Cleveland, Ohio, and David Smith, of Beckley, daughter Judy Jenkins of Tampa, Fla., three grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be on Thursday, January 3, 2013, at 1 p.m. at New Prospect Baptist Church in Sweeneysburg with Pastor Gary Williams officiating. Burial will be at Davis Cemetery, Mount Tabor.

Visitation will be held at Tyree Funeral Home in Mount Hope on Wednesday, January 2, 2013, from 6 p.m. - 8 p.m. and one hour prior to the service on Thursday at the church.

Darlene Denise Sumpter

FAYETTEVILLE — Darlene Denise Sumpter, 44, of Fayetteville, passed away Sunday, December 30, 2012.

PINEVILLE — Marsha Thompson, 51, passed away Tuesday, January 1, 2013. Services are incomplete.

Isabelle Sesler Tyree

OAK HILL — Isabelle Sesler Tyree, 92, of Oak Hill, W.Va., succumbed on Monday, December 31, 2012, at Bowers Hospice House in Beckley, W.Va.

Born November 4, 1920, at Page, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Charles Harrison Sesler, Sr. and Laura Bessie Coleman Sesler.

Retired from the Fayette County Board of Education with 321⁄2 years service, Mrs. Tyree was a much beloved Home Economics teacher having taught for 30 years at Oak Hill High School/Collins High School. She retired in 1975. She was vice president of Tyree Funeral Home, Inc. of Oak Hill and Mount Hope.

A 1939 graduate of Montgomery High School, she received a medal for being the most outstanding band member. She went on to graduate from Marshall College now Marshall University in 1943 where she was selected to represent Marshall in the Who's Who of American Colleges and Universities.

Isabelle was a long-time member of the Oak Hill Baptist Church. Her community involvement and memberships included being a member of the Marshall Alumni Association, University of Virginia Alumni Association, OHHS/CHS Alumni Association, Association of Retired School Employees, AARP and the Metropolitan Opera Guild.

A former member of the Spade and Trowel Garden Club, she had proudly served as an instructor for the National Garden Club Flower Show Schools and was a National Flower Show Judge.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the staff at Hidden Valley Nursing and Rehab, The Summit at Hidden Valley and Bowers Hospice House for the wonderful care Isabelle has received this past year.

Her only brother, Charles Harrison Sesler, Jr. preceded her in death.

Survivors include her husband of 62 years, Joseph “Joe” Tyree, sister-in-law, Myrtle Sesler Rutherford of Dolores, CO, niece, Mary Houseman of Colorado, nephew, Robert Sesler of Colorado, three great nieces, one great-great nephew and four great-great nieces.

She is also survived by her many cousins including Clyde Coleman, Thomas M. Mason and wife, Jonetta, Jennie Lee Mason and Martha Kay Irwin.

Funeral services will be on Friday, January 4, 2013 at 11 a.m. at Tyree Funeral Home in Oak Hill with Rev. David Sneed, Rev. Bryan Knight and Rev. Delmas Wolfe officiating. Burial will be at High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.

Visitation will be held at Tyree Funeral Home, Oak Hill on Thursday, January 3, 2013, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Employees of Tyree Funeral Home will serve as pallbearers.
