Betty Anne Baker
SWEET SPRINGS — Betty Anne Baker of Sweet Springs, WV, passed away Thursday, December 20, 2012, at the Lewis Gale Alleghany Hospital.
She was born at Sweet Springs, WV, the daughter of Pauline Schumaker Baker of Sweet Springs and the late Russell Baker.
Granddaughter of the late Tom and Lettie Schumaker and Richard and Daisy Baker.
Betty was employed by the State Department of Finance and Administration for 18 years, a career that culminated in her being appointed as Supervisor of the Micrographics Division of that Department before she relocated to Charlotte, North Carolina. While living in Charlotte, Betty was in charge of the Micrographics Division and the Archives Center of Alltel Corporation and held that position for 15 years. After her retirement from Alltel, Betty returned to her home in Sweet Springs, WV. She was a member of the Cokesbury United Methodist Church at Sweet Springs.
Those left to cherish her memory include her Mother, Pauline S. Baker of Sweet Springs; 2 sisters, Doris Rowan and husband, John, of Toledo, Ohio, Patricia Campbell and husband, Franklin, of Gap Mills; 2 brothers, Donald Baker and wife, Mary, Bobby Baker and wife, Janet, all of Covington, Va.; special nephews, Roger and Stephen Rowan of Toledo, Ohio, Michael Baker of Charlotte, NC, Rodney Baker of Covington, Va., Jerry Campbell of Union, WV, Keith and Mark Campbell both of Gap Mills, WV, and a special niece, Dana Baker of Charlotte, NC.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, December 23, 2012, at the Groves Funeral Home Chapel in Union with Revs. Mark and Marva Smearman officiating. Burial will follow at the Mt. View Cemetery at Sweet Springs, WV.
Friends may call at the Groves Funeral Home in Union from 12:30 until service time on Sunday.

CLEAR FORK — Eugene Cook, 85, passed away Friday, Dec. 21, 2012.

Tennis ‘Shorty’ Cook Sr.
PINEVILLE — Tennis “Shorty” Cook Sr., 85, of Pineville, passed away Thursday, Dec. 20, 2012, in Bowers Hospice House following a long illness.
Born Oct. 27, 1927, in Pineville, he was the son of the late Morton Blaine and India Ethel Walker Cook.
Shorty was a member of Cook Memorial Baptist Church, Pineville. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He enjoyed camping, reading and being with his family. During his 33-year mining career at Allied Chemical, he trained the National and State Championship Mine Rescue teams. He also retired from the West Virginia Department of Highways where he served as a store keeper.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by five brothers, Romeo, Raymond, Barbe, Orville and Ralph Cook; and three sisters, Ethel Ecelbarger, Jessie Parker and Mary Ann Parker.
Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Jeannine Parker Cook; three sons, Tennis “Pee Wee” Cook Jr. and his wife, Melody, of Rockview, David Cook and his wife, Kathy, of Teays Valley and John Cook of Frederick, Maryland; one daughter, Nancy Tabor and her husband, Ralph, of Foster; five grandchildren, Stacey Lusk, Josh Cook and his wife, Latisha, Lauren Cook-Childress and her husband, Chris, Leslie Cook, and Natalie Cook; and three great-grandchildren, Carmen Grace Lusk, Haylee Marie Cook and Harper Nicole Cook.
A celebration of Shorty’s life will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 22, 2012, at Calfee Funeral Service Chapel, Pineville, with the Rev. Evan Arkell officiating. Burial will follow in Palm Memorial Gardens, Matheny. Pallbearers will be Wyoming County Law Enforcement and West Virginia Department of Natural Resources Officers. Family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until time of service at the funeral home on Saturday.

Randolph Thomas Epperly Sr.
OAK HILL — Randolph Thomas Epperly Sr., 87, of Oak Hill, passed away Tuesday, December 18, 2012, at the Bowers Hospice House.
Born June 10, 1925, at Gatewood, the son of the late Earl Owen Epperly and Mary Louise (Moses) Epperly.
He was a member of the Oak Hill Baptist Church where he served as Deacon.
He was a WWII Navy veteran. During his military service he received the Good Conduct Medal, the WWII Victory Medal, the American Campaign Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal with one Bronze Star, the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, and the Presidential Unit Commendation Ribbon with one Bronze Star.
After the war, he returned to Fayette County. He worked for Epperly Motor Freight Company in Fayetteville, and he served 30 years as a Deputy Sheriff in Fayette County before retiring.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife Rosia Belle Epperly and two brothers Doug Epperly and Myles Epperly.
Those left to cherish his memory include three sons, Randolph Thomas Epperly Jr. and his wife Susan of Oak Hill, John Earl Epperly and his wife Clara of Richmond, Va., and Michael Wayne Epperly and his wife Kathy of Pittsburgh, Pa.; five sisters, Margarite Null of Fayetteville, Jean Hunt and her husband Keith of Hico, Barbara McGuffin and her husband Emory of Oak Hill, Betty Nahodil and her husband Bob of Jumping Branch, and Shirley Shumaker and her husband Ray of Ravenswood; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
His remains rest at High Lawn Funeral Home Chapel, 1435 E. Main Street, Oak Hill. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, at the Oak Hill Baptist Church, 613 Lundale Drive, Oak Hill, where the funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday with Rev. Bryan Knight and Rev. David White officiating.
Entombment will follow in High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill, with military rites conducted by the Oak Hill V.F.W. Post 3110.

Darrell Wayne Gwinn
Darrell Wayne Gwinn, age 54, of Beckley, WV, passed away at the Charleston Area Medical Center General Division on Thursday, December 20, 2012, following a work-related accident.
Darrell was born on June 8, 1958, in Beckley, and was the son of the late Howard Gwinn and Mildred Phillips Gwinn.
Darrell was a graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School in 1976, and was employed by Mountain Vending Inc. of Oak Hill as a warehouse manager. He was of the Methodist faith, and enjoyed music, the outdoors, and spending time with his family. Darrell was a kind and tender-hearted person, who loved his family dearly, and would freely give to anyone in need. He was always loyal to his job of 25 years.
Those survivors left to cherish his memory include his siblings, Gary Gwinn and his wife Melissa of Fairfax, Virginia; Danny G. Gwinn and his wife Brenda of Beckley; Randy Gwinn and his wife Joyce of Beckley; and his twin sister Darlene Blake and her husband Ira of Oak Hill, WV.
5 nieces, Kelli Watson and her husband Michael of Rock Creek, Amber Mann and her husband Jason of Stanaford Road, Beckley, Meryl Gwinn of Fairfax, Virginia, Erin Gwinn of Fairfax, Virginia, Syndi Poland of Washington, DC. Two nephews, Chad Gwinn of Springfield, Virginia, and Nick Gwinn, of Beckley, who often made his home with Darrell. He also was loved by his three great-nieces, Madison, and Baylee Mann, and Kendall Watson.
Several aunts and uncles are also among his survivors.
Funeral services will be conducted to Celebrate The Life Of Darrell Gwinn on Sunday, December 23, 2012, at 2 p.m. at the Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel in Beckley with Pastor Rudell Bloomfield and Minister Jarrod Martin officiating. Jonathan Lee Hornsby Sr.
Jonathan Lee Hornsby Sr., age 30, of Beckley, passed away on Wednesday, December 19, 2012, at his home with complications of Juvenile Diabetes.
Born June 23, 1982, in Beckley and is the son of Barbara and Ronnie Rose of Beckley.
Jon was an avid outdoorsman; he enjoyed fishing. Some of his fondest memories were taking his son and daughter fishing and camping.
In addition to his parents he is survived by his children, Jonathan Lee, Jr., and Savannah Hornsby; sister, Dena Hornsby of Lafollette, TN; and a host of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles who loved him very much.
In keeping with Jon’s wishes, he was cremated.
There will be no services.
