Jessica Ann Bradley

Jessica Ann Bradley, 29, of Beckley, formerly of Fenwick, passed away Thursday, April 4, 2013.

Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 7, at Simons-Coleman Funeral Home, Richwood, with Pastor Larry Russell officiating. Interment will be in Mountain View Memorial Park, Richwood. Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. Sunday, April 7, at the funeral home.

Frank Mason Fortner

BAILEYSVILLE — Frank Mason Fortner, age 95, passed away at his home in Baileysville on Wednesday, April 3, 2013.

He was born on November 14, 1917, to the late Len and Anne Bailey Fortner.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Bertha Perry Fortner; two brothers, Onnie Fortner and Wonnie Fortner; and four sisters, Minnie Bailey, Myrtle Toler, Nellie Steele and Shirley Steele.

He is survived by two sisters, Bessie Travis of Fayetteville, NC, and Louise Riffe of Fredericksburg, VA; three children, a son, Nicholas Fortner of Brenton, and two daughters, Peggy Carey of Lynn Haven, FL, and Linda Jenkins of Riverview, FL; five grandchildren, Deborah Carey-Burkett of Panama City, FL, Patrick Dean Carey of Mooresville, NC, Johnnie Jenkins, Jr., of St. Cloud, FL, Michael Todd Jenkins of Riverview, FL, and Shawn Jenkins of Baileysville. Mr. Fortner is also survived by several great-grandchildren.

He was a coal miner prior to serving as a Deputy Sheriff for the Wyoming County Sheriff’s Department until his retirement. Mr. Fortner was a very generous person who never met a stranger. He will be sorely missed by all who knew him.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Sunday, April 7, 2013, at Calfee Funeral Service in Pineville, with the Rev. Russell King officiating. Mr. Fortner will be laid to rest at Palm Memorial Gardens Mausoleum, Matheny. Friends may gather with the family 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, April 6, at the funeral home.

Tracy L. Riffe

Tracy L. Riffe, 88, of Beckley, passed away Wednesday, April 3, 2013. Born November 30, 1924, in Crab Orchard, he was the son of the late Duffey Alderson and Beatrice Stephens Riffe. Following his graduation from Woodrow Wilson High School and Beckley College, Tracy enlisted in the U.S. Navy during which he served in both the North African and Pacific Theatres during WWII.

The majority of his professional career was spent with Beckley Federal Savings Bank where he served as president for numerous years. In addition, Tracy was a member, former Deacon, Trustee and Treasurer of the Crab Orchard Baptist Church. He was also a member of the Friendship Sunday School Class and a member of the Crab Orchard Hunting Club.

In addition to his parents, Tracy was preceded in death by a sister, Hester Plumley, and two brothers, Orval and Ellis Riffe.

Survivors include his devoted wife of nearly 65 years, Martha Jane Riffe; daughter, Sue Ellen Swepston and husband Clark of Flat Top, WV; granddaughters, Emilee Payne and husband Michael of Charleston and Andrea Campbell and husband David of Princeton; international granddaughter, Olga Semenova Allen and Mark of Germantown, MD; great-grandchildren, Elisabeth, Molly and James Payne, Grace, Sarah, Elijah and Erin Campbell and Peter Allen; sisters, Frances Dickerson and husband Ray of Beckley, Alice F. Riffe of Crab Orchard; sisters-in-law, Alice M. Riffe of Crab Orchard and Norma Riffe of Raleigh, NC. He will be sadly missed by a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Sunday, April 7, 2013, at the Crab Orchard Baptist Church with Pastor Mike Sisson officiating. Entombment will follow in Sunset Memorial Park. Friends may visit with the family from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the Calfee Funeral Home, 800 S. Oakwood Ave., Beckley.

Pallbearers will be Duffey Riffe, Greg Riffe, Randy Cook, Rick Cook, Jerry Phipps, Johnny Phipps, Kelly Phipps and Robert Skiles.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Crab Orchard Baptist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 446, Crab Orchard, WV 25827.

Patricia Ann Roles

JUMPING BRANCH — Patricia Ann Roles, age 72, of Jumping Branch, West Virginia, passed away on Thursday, April 4, 2013, at her home.

Born on January 2, 1941, in Winding Gulf, WV, she was the daughter of Geneva Treadway Patrick Giles of Prosperity, WV, and the late Johnnie Patrick.

Mrs. Roles was a former office manager at the Shady Spring PSD, and was a former manager of the Green Valley Town Houses.

She was a member of the Cross Pointe Church of God, and had made her home at Jumping Branch for the past 17 years.

Mrs. Roles was preceded in death by her husband, John Roles.

Survivors include two sons, William Glenn Roles of Jumping Branch, and Mark Alan Roles of Jumping Branch.

A sister, Brenda Wurst of Dallas, Texas, six grandchildren, Jocelyn, Jenna, Jessica, Ty, Trip, and Trent. Two great-grandchildren, Kylee and Adrian.

A memorial service will be held at the Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home Shady Spring Chapel on Sunday, April 7, 2013, at 2 p.m. with Pastor Vondie Cook officiating. Friends may visit with the family 30 minutes prior to the services at the funeral home.

James ‘Bunn’ Isaac Singleton

COLUMBIA, S.C. — James “Bunn” Isaac Singleton, 48, of Columbia, South Carolina, and formerly of Beckley, West Virginia, passed away Easter morning, March 31, 2013, after a sudden illness.

He was the son of James Hairston of Charleston, West Virginia, and Shirley Singleton of Beckley, West Virginia. James graduated from Charleston High School where he played football and the Academy of Careers and Technology (ACT) with an Electrician Degree. He served in the United States Army with an honorable discharge.

James moved to South Carolina about three months ago to work as an Electrician at Schneider Electric.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, LeVette Brown Singleton of Columbia, South Carolina; sons: James Isaac Singleton, Jr., of Kimberly, West Virginia, Terrell Gray of Charlotte, North Carolina, and daughters: Jamicka Gray of Charlotte, North Carolina, and Courtney Brown of Atlanta, Georgia; brothers: Timothy L. Singleton and Jason Hairston of Charleston, West Virginia; sisters: Terri L. Singleton of Beckley, West Virginia, and Tiffany Stone of Charlotte, North Carolina; seven grandchildren and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, family and friends.

A celebration of his life will be Saturday, April 6, 2013, at 1 p.m. at the Levi Missionary Baptist Church, 5125 Church Drive, Rand, West Virginia, with Apostle Robert L. Haley, III, officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to service.

Preston Funeral Home is in charge of the funeral arrangements. Interment will be at the Donel C. Kinnard Memorial State Veteran Cemetery in Institute, West Virginia.



Thomas ‘Tommy’ F. Sparks

Thomas “Tommy” F. Sparks, 73, of Prosperity, died Wednesday, April 3, 2013.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday, April 8, at the Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Chapel in Beckley with Pastor Bryan Bird and Dr. Charles Bright officiating. Interment will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens in Prosperity. The visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday at the funeral chapel.

Harold Joe Via

The big buck can rest a little easier now. The great hunter has laid down his rifle and the Volkswagen King has laid down his tools as our beloved Harold Joe Via went home to be with the Lord, Friday morning, April 5, 2013.

Harold was the most enduring and courageous person we have ever known, having undergone a heart transplant in 1994 and a kidney transplant in 1995. He was a master mechanic of automobiles, an avid hunter, gun collector, auto enthusiast and sportsman. Harold performed his first flight solo to obtain his pilot’s license at the age of 16. He was the first son of local aviator and mechanic Harold R. Via and Edith O. Via, who both preceded him in death.

Harold is survived by his sons, Darold J. Via and Harold Ray Via, daughters Kimberly L. (Sam) Brewer and Terrie A. Bailey. Brothers James W. (Wanda) Via, William “Bill” R. (Kimberly) Via of Beckley, and Ray B. (Karen) Via, sister Sandra J. (William) Acord all of the Beckley area. Harold also is survived by 10 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren, several nieces, and nephews.

Visitation will be at Blue Ridge Funeral Home from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, April 6, 2013. The funeral services are on Sunday, April 7, at 1 p.m. at the Blue Ridge Funeral Home with Pastor Chad Shaffer officiating.

Shirley May Walker

MOUNT HOPE — Shirley May Walker, 66, of Mt. Hope, passed away Wednesday, April 3, 2013, following a long illness.

She was born May 29, 1946, in Sugar Creek, WV. Shirley was the daughter of the late Elmer David Clark and Alice Grace Slayton Clark. She was preceded in death by her husband Henry Walker and a brother, Kenneth Clark.

Shirley was of the Pentecostal faith and a homemaker.

Survivors are her children, Cynthia Kincaid of Scarbro and Jacob Walker of Clarksville, Tenn.; sisters, Caroll Holcome of Canton, Ohio, Margaret Price of Wellington, Ohio, Sue Dickerson of Canton, Ohio, Anne Barnett of Canton, Ohio; 1/2 sisters, Edna Neff of Canton, Ohio, Naomi Bebe of Brownsville, WV; brothers, Michael Clark of Canton, Ohio, and David Clark of Canton, Ohio; grandchildren, Jason Kincaid, Amanda Miller, Jeffery Kincaid, Shyanne Bernard, Kali Walker, June Walker; great-grandchildren, Dezire Miller and Atlas Kincaid.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Saturday, April 6, 2013, at Wallace and Wallace funeral home chapel in Ansted with Rev. Randy McGuire officiating. Burial will follow in Richmond Chapel Cemetery at Ramsey.

Ruby A. Keffer Wheeler

HINTON — Ruby A. Keffer Wheeler of Hinton, our 100-year-old mother, went home to be with the Lord on April 5, 2013, after a wonderful, long life.

Born February 4, 1913, at Buck, she was the daughter of the late Samuel and Virginia Carson Keffer.

She was the oldest living member of the Elk Knob Baptist Church, a member of the Rebekahs, the Hinton Eastern Star, Hinton Degree of Honor, a Statewide Volunteer of the Year, a former employee of the Hinton Hospital for 21 years, Hinton Senior Center for 22 years and a volunteer for the Summers County Hospital Auxiliary. Mrs. Wheeler was a loving, kind and caring person who was always there for her family and friends in times of need.

Preceded in death by her husband Reverend E. C. “Buck” Wheeler and eighteen brothers and sisters.

Those left to cherish her memory include two sons, Bobby Wheeler and wife Shirley of Hinton and Garry Wheeler of Hinton; one daughter, Jeanie Ratliff and husband Bobbie Rex of Union; nine grandchildren; eighteen great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Eugene Keffer and wife Nancy of Elkins; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 7, 2013, at the Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors Chapel with Pastors Andy Howdock and Bobbie Rex Ratliff officiating. Burial will follow in the Elk Knob Baptist Church Cemetery.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, April 6, 2013, at the funeral parlors.

Mike Ratliff, Phillip Ratliff, Jeff Ratliff, Jody Ratliff, Timmy Wheeler and Tommy Miller will serve as pallbearers.
