Mary Madeline Adkins
HINTON — Mary Madeline Adkins, 78, of Hinton, died at 12:10 p.m. Tuesday, March 12, 2013, at Summers County A.R.H. Hospital in Hinton, following a long illness.
Born June 5, 1934, in Hinton, she was the daughter of the late Carl Junior and Croney Ellen Martin Adkins.
Mrs. Adkins was a former employee of Pipestem State Park in the housekeeping department. She was a former housekeeper for E.M. Meadows Funeral Home in Hinton and several area residents. Mary was a lifelong resident of Summers County and attended the Hinton Gospel Tabernacle as long as her health permitted.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold “Buster” Adkins. Also by a daughter, Louella Adkins, twin infant brothers, sister, Kathleen Adkins, daughter-in-law, Joyce Adkins, granddaughter, Angelia Adkins and four great grandchildren.
Survivors include three sons, Dickie Adkins of Hinton, Ducky Adkins and wife Debbie of Hinton and Nickie Adkins and wife Rhonda of Woodrumtown; four daughters, Judy Epperly and husband Doug of Nimitz, Brenda Trout and husband Ralph of Hinton, Deloris Cook and companion Nick DeGroff of Hinton and Lisa Buckland and husband Ronnie of Hinton; one brother, Harold Adkins and wife Betty of Hinton; one sister, Barbara Adkins of Hinton; 16 grandchildren; 33 great grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren also survive.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, March 15, 2013, at Pivont Funeral Home Chapel in Hinton, with Pastor Dallas Peyton officiating. Burial will follow in the Adkins Family Cemetery near Hinton.
Friends may call from 6 until 8 p.m. Thursday evening at the funeral home.
Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Hester Mae McClanahan Gill, 86, of Beckley, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, March 12, 2013.
Born February 21, 1927, she was a daughter of the late Arnold and Anna McCormick McMillion.
In addition to her parents, Hester is preceded in death by her son, Robert Lloyd McClanahan; grandsons, Preston Amick, Travis Hylton, and Ryan Atwood.
Those left to cherish her memory include her husband of 38 years, James Gill of Beckley; daughters, Rose Arthur of Raleigh, N.C., Linda Suders and husband Gary of Madison, Ala., Ann Hewlett and husband Phil of Beckley, Barbara Williams and husband Terry of Beckley, Debbie Ospina of Beckley; son, Bill McClanahan and wife Teresa of Beckley; 14 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild; sisters, Joyce Carter of Beckley, Mary Richmond of Prince, Shirley Dykes of Victoria, Texas, Carol Wood of Beckley and Wanda Gunther of Beckley.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, March 15, 2013, at Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley, with Pastor Ken Souder officiating. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens.

James ‘Jim’ Clark Gray
James “Jim” Clark Gray, 71, of Crab Orchard, passed away Monday, March 11, 2013.
Born January 8, 1942, at Slab Fork, he was the son of the late Lacey and Goldie Clark Gray.
Jim was a retired coal miner for Long Branch Energy and a member of the Glen White Church of God. He was a U.S. Army veteran serving in Germany. Jim had a love for the outdoors and enjoyed fishing and hunting.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by sons-in-law, Terry M. Goff and Gene Alan Byrd; sisters, Eva Terry, Glida Lilly and brothers, Louis, Herbert and Henry Gray.
He is survived by his wife Linda Acord Gray; two daughters, Donna Gray Byrd, Diane Gray Holdren and husband Russell; son, Justin Gray and his girlfriend Samantha Alderman; two grandson, James Goff and Gregory Gray; three granddaughters, Felicia Sydenstricker and her boyfriend Shannon Holt, Samantha Phillips and Ciara Sydenstricker and two great grandsons, Skylar Justin Gray and Harley Holt and by two sisters and five brothers.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Friday, March 15, 2013, at the Glen White Church of God, with Rev. Jesse Farley officiating. Friends may visit with the family one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will follow at Acord Mountain Cemetery.

Jack E. Johnson
ANSTED — Jack E. Johnson, 87, of Ansted, passed away Tuesday, March 12, 2013, at his home following a short illness.
Born May 1, 1925, in Fort Mill, S.C., he was the son of the late Robert Franklin and Lula Eleanor Crenshaw Johnson. The family moved to the Ansted area from South Carolina when he was 5-years-old and he lived there the remainder of his life.
He was preceded in death in 1976 by his beloved wife, Nathale Ferguson Johnson.
Jack retired from EMC Metals in Alloy as chief electrician and was a U. S. Navy Seabee in World War II, having served his country on Saipan and Okinawa. His patriotic spirit carried over into his position as chairman of the New Haven Veterans’ Memorial in Ansted. His hard work and dedication brought that beautiful tribute to life. He was a member of the V.F.W. and was also very active with the Masons, Shriners, and with the Order of the Eastern Star.
He was a member of the Kesler Memorial Presbyterian Church on Sunday Road at Hico.
Jack was a kind, gentle person who easily became an instant friend. He had a strong love of God, family, and country.
Survivors include: two sons, Frank Johnson (Cheryl) of Watkinsville, Ga., and Jack Johnson (Jenny) of Smithfield, Va.; a sister, Mrs. Dave (Dorothy) Miller of Puyallup, Wash.; six (6) grandchildren; and twelve (12) great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m., Saturday, March 16, 2013, at the Wallace & Wallace Funeral Chapel, Ansted, with Pastor Jim Dempsey and Rev. Joan Stewart officiating. Burial will follow in Restlawn Memory Gardens, Victor.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, March 15, at the Wallace & Wallace Funeral Chapel, Ansted.

Arnold Lee Martin
RUPERT — Arnold Lee Martin, 84, of Rupert, passed away Tuesday afternoon, March 12, 2013, at his home, following a long illness.
Born May 26, 1928, at Green Sulphur, he was the son of the late Augustas and Lura Mae Cox Martin.
Arnold was a member of Rupert Missionary Baptist Church, and a retired coal miner. He was a Korean War veteran with the U.S. Army, where he received a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Joann Adkins Martin in 1994; a son, Billy Joe Martin, and a sister, Daisy Mae Martin.
Survivors include a daughter, Kathy Ann Fleshman (Doug) of Rupert; a son, Robert Martin (Connie) of Rupert; five grandchildren: Christina Dean (Chad) of Crichton, Michael Fleshman of Rupert, Eric Fleshman of Rupert, Megan Doyle (Ben) of Waynesboro, Va. and Beth Martin of Frankford; and seven great-grandchildren.
Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, march 16, 2013, at Wallace & Wallace Chapel of Rainelle, with Pastor Don Bean officiating. Burial will follow at Wallace Memorial Cemetery, Clintonville.

Jerrell David Miller Sr.
COLLINSVILLE, Va. — Jerrell David Miller Sr., 68, of Collinsville, formerly of Brenton, died Monday, March 11, 2013 at his home.
He was born in Marianna, W.Va., on December 16, 1944, to the late Roscoe Miller and the Ella Craig Miller. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Carol June Miller and two sisters, Lilly Roscoe and Shirley Miller.
He was raised in the Church of God and was a retired coal miner having worked over 20 years for U.S. Steel. He was a member of the UMWA Local 1713.
He is survived by two daughters, Michelle Green of Collinsville, and Tammy Hatfield of Mt. Hope; one son Jerrell David Miller Jr. of Brenton; eight grandchildren, six great grandchildren; one brother, Roscoe Miller, Brenton; three sisters, Dorothy Green and Janine Miller, both of Brenton, and Sharon Blankenship of Mt. Hope.
The family will receive friends Friday, March 15, 2013, from 6 to 9 p.m. in the Church of God in Brenton. The funeral service will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. in the Church of God with Pastor Lee Fisher officiating. Burial will follow in the Madison-Miller Family Cemetery in Mill Creek, W.Va.

Madleen ‘Cricket’ Surface
MEADOW BRIDGE — Madleen “Cricket” Surface, 85, of Meadow Bridge, went home to be with her Lord and Savior Sunday, March 10, 2013.
Born October 15, 1927, in Rainelle, she was the daughter of the late William F. and Eula Grace Tallman Kane.
Cricket was a homemaker and a member of the Meadow Bridge United Methodist Church. She was instrumental in the opening of the Mission in Meadow Bridge. Cricket loved crafting and bowling.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Robert Surface; two sons Billy and Mike Surface; and one daughter Penny McGuire.
Survivors include her daughter Teresa Mitton and husband Michael of Archer, Fla.; one sister Fran Gast of Fredericksburg, Va.; seven grandchildren Bobby Jones and wife Miranda, Cody Jones, Billy Jones, Miranda McGuire, Megan Parker and husband Andy, all of Florida, Mike Surface and Robert Surface, both of Columbia, S.C.; seven great-grandchildren Abby, Brantley, Kirstie, Caleb, Haley, Brianna and Brittany; one great-great-grandchild Calie; a special niece Debbie Bumgarner and a special nephew Keith Barnett and wife Tamara, who helped care for Cricket; and a host of other family that she loved so much.
Services will be 2 p.m. Friday, March 15, 2013, in the Meadow Bridge United Methodist Church, with Pastor Roger Booth and Ronnie Patterson officiating. Burial will follow in the Patton Memorial Cemetery at Meadow Bridge.

Gentry Leff Williams
Gentry Leff Williams, age 86, of Artie, passed away on Tuesday March 12, 2013, at the Bowers Hospice House.
Born on November 16, 1926, at White Oak, he was the son of the late Murphy Williams and Ada Stover Williams of Pax.
He was preceded in death by his wife Emily Williams, an infant daughter Melinda Williams, a son Gentry Randall Williams, a daughter Evelena Polries, and siblings Lawrence Williams, Magaline Williams, Annette Stover, Ruth Williams, Tom Williams, Roland Williams, and Rex Williams.
Mr. Williams worked 31 years in the coal mines, ending his career at Bethlehem Steel at Eunice. He was a member of the Bolt Church of God at Bolt.
Those survivors left to cherish his memory include his son, Ricky Williams and his wife Anita of Artie; two daughters, Connie Smith and her husband Richard of Port Charlotte, Fla., and Mereda Myers of Cleveland, Tenn.; a sister, Doris Stover of Pax, and he is also survived by 10 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
The family wishes to extend heartfelt thanks to our father’s very special friend Robert Clark of Glen Daniel for his extreme kindness and generosity to our father over the past years.
Funeral services will be conducted on Saturday, March 16, 2013 at 1 p.m. at the Artie Church of God with Rev. Gary Maynor officiating. Burial will follow at the Workman’s Creek Cemetery.
Friends may visit with the family at the church from 11 a.m. until service time on Saturday.
