Pendleton Lewis Raines
On Monday, February 24, 2014, Pendleton Lewis Raines, 89, of Beckley, passed away with his family by his side. Born April 18, 1924, at Wayside, WV, he was the son of the late Pendleton Roy and Sarah Harris Raines.
Penn was a lifelong resident of Monroe and Raleigh counties. He was a Veteran of WWII, serving in the Army Air Force as an Aerial Gunner and receiving honorable discharge in 1945. Returning to Beckley, he was owner operator of Harper Heights Grocery and Service Station. Later, he attended Morris Harvey College in Charleston, WV, for a degree in Business Science. Raines and Raines Construction was formed in 1958, later becoming Beckley Realty Company. Penn was active in the area home building and real estate industry for over fifty years, completing his last house in 2010. During this time, he obtained his auctioneering license and truly enjoyed those events. He was involved in many community and business organizations. Also a member of several area dance clubs, he enjoyed ballroom and square dancing. Penn had many hobbies: including tending his small vineyard and crafting wines, traveling the back roads and abroad, and being with family and friends. A natural student of life and learning, he was always ready for the next adventure.
Penn was preceded in death by his wife, Louise Morrison Raines, a daughter Penny Ruth, a granddaughter Kristen Leigh, and brother Fred Henry Raines.
Survivors left to cherish his memory include a son, David L. Raines and wife, Tonja, grandson, David Ashton, all of Beckley. A daughter Deborah Denny and husband Chris of Flat Top. Grandson Zephan Keatley and wife, Brandy, great-grandson Liam, all of Raleigh, NC. A brother George Henry Raines and wife Dorty of Mansfield, OH. A sister-in-law Alberta Raines of Shreveport, LA, nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Service will be at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 2, 2014, at Rose & Quesenberry Peace Chapel in Beckley with Pastor Craig Stevens of Northgate Baptist Church officiating. A private burial will follow. Friends may call one hour before services at the funeral home.
