Elsie Lee Akers

Elsie Lee Akers, 99, of Coal City, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, February 19, 2014 at Pine Lodge Nursing Home following an extended illness.

She was born on the 21st day of November in 1914 in West Virginia and was a daughter to the late Hiram Crusoe “H.C.” Perry and Biddie Fannie Muncie.

Elsie was a homemaker and was an avid gardener; she enjoyed planting flowers and tending to her vegetable garden. She loved to sew. She was also a member of the Lilly Brook Freewill Baptist Church in Coal City.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Coy V. Akers; daughter, Rita Whitehair; brother, Carl Perry; sister, Gartha Dodson; and five grandchildren.

Those left behind to carry on her legacy include her children, Coy Vincent Akers Jr. and wife Joyce of Baltimore, Md., William Jack Akers and wife Daris of Sale Creek, Tenn., Evelyn Maurnetia Belcher of Charleston, W.Va., Martha Sue Miller of Rural Retreat, Va., H.C. “Buddy” Akers and wife Ruth of Lawton, Okla., Bonnie Jean Ford and husband Grover of Christiansburg, Va., Freddie Lee Akers and wife Karen of Charleston, W.Va., Barbara Ann “Bobbie” Lyman and husband Ray of Christiansburg, Va., Leonard Wayne “Bo” Akers and wife Verna of Beckley, Kenneth Dean Akers of Coal City, and Donna Lynette Nicholson and husband Scott of Edgewater, Fla.; 27 grandchildren, 33 great grandchildren, and 13 great-great grandchildren also survive her.

Services to celebrate the life of Elsie Lee Akers will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, February 22, 2014 at the Williams-Blue Ridge Funeral Home in Sophia. Interment will follow at Hot Coal Cemetery, Sophia.

Pallbearers will be family and friends.

Family and friends may gather from 12:30 until 2:30 p.m. at the funeral home on Saturday for visitation.
