OCEANA — William “Bill” Sams, 80, of Oceana, passed away on Monday, November 25, 2013 at his home.

It is with great sadness, we announce the passing of our most cherished, Ronald Allen Smith. Ron died last Friday, Nov. 22nd, 2013, of apparent heart attack, while taking an afternoon walk.
“Ron” as he was affectionately known, was the first of two sons born to the late Roy Allen Smith of Oak Hill and the late Margie June Kincaid Smith of Vero Beach, Fla.
Born on January 22nd, 1948, he was 65 years of age. His brother, Ricky Smith and his wife, Jessica survive of Dawson as well as Roy’s wife, Ruby of Oak Hill.
Ron spent his childhood at Oak Hill. A 1965 graduate of Collins High School, he served in the US Navy during the Vietnam Era. Ron was a recipient of the National Defense Medal. Ron began a career with C&P Telephone Company, moving on to Bell Atlantic and retiring from Verizon with 23 years of service.
Left to cherish his memory is his devoted wife of 36 years, Kathy Bailey Smith. Ron and Kathy have made their home in Rock Creek since 1996. Ron enjoyed living in the country and watching the birds and wild life that lived throughout the surrounding area. Ron also leaves behind his son, Walter, and granddaughters, Raeanne and Jennifer all of Cincinnati, Ohio and Kathy’s sisters, Carol Smith of Beckley and Patty Nicholson and her husband, James of Athens, Ala.
A Memorial Service commemorating Ron’s life will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 27th at 3 p.m. at the Melton Mortuary Chapel. The Rev. Paul Zutaut will be officiating. Military Rites will be conducted by the West Virginia Honor Guard, Camp Dawson. The family will receive friends from 2 p.m. until the service hour.
