Denver Acord

 On Sunday, Nov. 24th, 2013, our most loved, Denver Dale Acord of Glen White, passed away at the Raleigh General Hospital. He was in his 78th year.

Born on Sept. 3rd, 1935, at Surveyor, he was the son of the late Lacy and Ora Cole Acord.   

Denver was a retired coal miner with 20 years of service in the mining industry. In his leisure time he enjoyed the CB Radio. His CB handle was “Jaguar.” Denver was also a HAM operator. Denver immensely enjoyed driving. He knew all the streets in Beckley.

He leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife, Doris Jean Belcher Acord; a step son, Raymond McKinney and his wife, Deborah and the grandchildren, Candis, Raymond Jr. and Audrie Lynn; his sisters and brothers, Carol Sue Wright and her husband, Dale of Beckley, Marie Barker and her husband, John “Sambo” Barker of Glen Daniel, Dallas Paul Acord and his wife, Connie of Augusta, Ga., Charles “Bucky: Acord and his wife, Rebecca and Carl “Buddy” Acord and his wife, Lela all of Eccles; a special aunt, Ruth Cozart survives as well as several nieces and nephews. Denver had many friends.

On Wednesday, Nov. 27th at 1 p.m. there will be “Service of Remembrance” at the Melton Mortuary Chapel. Rev. Paul Zutaut will be officiating. The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. until the service hour. Denver will be laid to rest in the Sunset Memorial Park.

Helen Harrison McLane Arbogast

GREEN BANK — Helen Harrison McLane Arbogast, 83, passed away Saturday, Nov. 23, 2013.

Service will be 1 p.m. Friday, Nov. 29, 2013, at Hebron Baptist Church at Green Bank, with the Rev. Wayne Hooper and the Rev. Ray Humphries officiating. Burial will follow in the Arbovale Cemetery.

Friends may call 12 noon until time of the service at the church on Friday.

Bertha Lee McKinney

RAINELLE — Bertha Lee McKinney, 82, of Rainelle, passed away on Saturday, Nov. 23, 2013, at Appalachian Regional Healthcare Center of Beckley after an extended illness.

She was born on Jan. 6, 1931, in Webster County, to the late Russell and Ruie J. Barker Green.

She was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith. She lived all her life in West Virginia, but 2 1/2 years in New York.

Bertha is survived by her sons, Larry L. (Sarah) McKinney of New York and Jerry L. (Norma) McKinney of Rainelle; brother, Bobby (Sally) Green of Tennessee; sister, Juanita (Sis) Christian of Cowen; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.’

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph L. McKinney; her parents; daughter, Bonnie L. McKinney; brothers, Junior and Ralph Green; sisters, Vie, Mildred, Gatha and Pearl.

Graveside services will be held at Beaver Run Cemetery, Bolair, at a later date.

Lonzo Lamarr ‘Cane Man’ Ross

“I’m Singing in the Heavenly Choir!”

Mr. Lonzo Lamarr “Cane Man” Ross, 59, of Beckley died Saturday, November 23, 2013 at Bowers Hospice House.

Born December 17, 1953 in Tams, W.Va., he was the son of the late Lonzo M. and Glenna E. Biggers Ross.

He was a truck driver and a member of Heart of God Ministries, Beckley.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Ernest, Steve and Marvin Ross.

Left to cherish precious memories are his brother, Wayne (Jackie) Ross of Tennessee; sisters, Drema (Seth) Kellum of Columbus, Ohio, Faith Booker and Mathel Ross, both of Beckley; god-brother, Nathan Shelton of Beckley; two special great-nephews, Ricky Martin, USAF, Korea and DeVon Martin, ROTC, Columbus, Ohio; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

As per his request, there will be no visitation or funeral service.

OCEANA — William “Bill” Sams, 80, of Oceana, passed away on Monday, November 25, 2013 at his home.

Ronald Smith

 It is with great sadness, we announce the passing of our most cherished, Ronald Allen Smith. Ron died last Friday, Nov. 22nd, 2013, of apparent heart attack, while taking an afternoon walk.  

“Ron” as he was affectionately known, was the first of two sons born to the late Roy Allen Smith of Oak Hill and the late Margie June Kincaid Smith of Vero Beach, Fla.

Born on January 22nd, 1948, he was 65 years of age. His brother, Ricky Smith and his wife, Jessica survive of Dawson as well as Roy’s wife, Ruby of Oak Hill.

Ron spent his childhood at Oak Hill. A 1965 graduate of Collins High School, he served in the US Navy during the Vietnam Era. Ron was a recipient of the National Defense Medal.  Ron began a career with C&P Telephone Company, moving on to Bell Atlantic and retiring from Verizon with 23 years of service.

Left to cherish his memory is his devoted wife of 36 years, Kathy Bailey Smith. Ron and Kathy have made their home in Rock Creek since 1996. Ron enjoyed living in the country and watching the birds and wild life that lived throughout the surrounding area. Ron also leaves behind his son, Walter, and granddaughters, Raeanne and Jennifer all of Cincinnati, Ohio and Kathy’s sisters, Carol Smith of Beckley and Patty Nicholson and her husband, James of Athens, Ala.

A Memorial Service commemorating Ron’s life will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 27th at 3 p.m. at the Melton Mortuary Chapel. The Rev. Paul Zutaut will be officiating. Military Rites will be conducted by the West Virginia Honor Guard, Camp Dawson. The family will receive friends from 2 p.m. until the service hour.

Carol J. Tanner

Carol J. Tanner, 77, of Beckley went home to be with our Lord after a courageous battle with cancer on Saturday, November 23, 2013. Born November 24, 1935, she was the daughter of the late Carl and Ola McGuire.

She is also preceded in death by her brother Dr. Carl Houston McGuire.

Carol retired from Beckley National Bank after working for more than 30 years. She was a member of Faith Community Church in Beckley. She loved watching and playing with her great-grandchildren.

Those left to cherish her memory include her loving husband John E. Tanner; children Greg Tanner and wife Patsy, Steve Tanner and wife Donna, Lisa Chapman and husband Ronnie, and Jennifer Tanner Jenkins all of Beckley. Also surviving are her grandchildren, John Chapman and wife Amanda, James Chapman, Gary Tanner, and Stephanie Tanner, and great-grandchildren, Makyeun, Azariah, and Jailyn Chapman. A sister Ramona Ison of Locust Grove, Virginia, and Aunt Edith McDonald of Shady Spring also survive.

Services will be Tuesday, November 26, 2013, at 2 p.m. at Blue Ridge Funeral Home in Beckley with Pastor Sam Peterson officiating. Friends may gather with the family from 12 to  2 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers will be John Chapman, James Chapman, Gary Tanner, Jim Aleshire, Gary Epling and Rick Jones.

The family would like to extend their appreciation to the staff at the Bowers Hospice House. In lieu of flowers, donations of sympathy may be made to Bowers Hospice House, 454 Cranberry Drive, Beckley, WV 25801, in memory of Carol Tanner.
