Elizabeth Ann Bare

Elizabeth Ann “Betty” Bare, 87, of Surveyors Branch, died at 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 28, 2010, at her home following a sudden illness.

Arrangements are pending completion at Pivont Funeral Home, Hinton.



Jesse J. Blankenship

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Jesse James Blankenship, 76, died August 25, 2010.

Mr. Blankenship was born in Stephenson, W.Va., to the late Jess and Mary Shrewberry Blankenship.

He was a veteran having served in the U.S. Army during Korean conflict, a member of London Bridge Baptist Church and an avid gardener.

Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife, Sylvia Pauline Blankenship; sons, James Eugene Blankenship and Melvin Blankenship and wife Martha, all of Virginia Beach; grandchildren, Courtney and Caitlyn Blankenship.

Graveside services will be held on Friday at 11 a.m. at Princess Anne Memorial Park with Rev. Ken Carlton officiating.

Lura Pauline Campbell

PETERSTOWN — Lura Pauline Campbell, 83, of Bloomingdale, Ga., formerly of Peterstown, passed away Monday, Aug. 30, 2010, at Hospice Savannah, Savannah, Ga.

Darrell Dempsey Davis

Darrell Dempsey Davis, age 81, of Coal City, happily entered Heaven’s gates on Saturday, August 28, 2010, at the Bowers Hospice House in Beckley, surrounded by his family, following a long illness.

Darrell was born on May 23, 1929, at Mill Creek; he was preceded in death by wife Lula Mae Walker Davis, by his parents, Frank and Lillian Magdalene Tucker Davis, by his father and mother-in-law, Alvie and Mettie Thompson Walker; brothers, Charles, Bob, Pete, and Billy Davis; a sister, Barbara DeNower; and a newborn son, Kevin Daley.

Darrell was a longtime member and trustee of the Sunset Hills Missionary Baptist Church at Coal City. He worked as a boss in various coal mines for many years and enjoyed spending time at his camp at Barger Springs, fishing and hunting. Darrell spent his lifetime loving and caring for his family as well as helping others.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps.

He is survived by his brother, Franklin Davis of Wilmington, Delaware, and a sister, Patsy Davis Brosch of Ocean City, Maryland.

Surviving are his children, Lynn Milam of Coal City, Vicki Davis of Coal City, Mike Davis and his wife Pat of Coal City, Tom Davis and his wife Connie of Portland, Texas, and Tim Davis and his wife Evelyn of Coal City. His grandchildren include Kevin Milam and his wife Brandy, Traci Wiley and her husband Brent, Brent Milam and his wife Norma, Micah Davis and his wife Heather, Sarah Robertson and her husband Bret, Jason Davis and his wife Scarlett, Kimberly Davis, Mark Covington and his wife Tracy, Melodie Necessary and her husband Kenny. He is also survived by 20 great-grandchildren whom he loved dearly, as well as his dear friend Pastor Bob Dean of Missouri. Darrell will be lovingly missed by all.

Friends may visit him today, Tuesday, August 31, 2010, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Sunset Hills Missionary Baptist Church on Coal City Road in Coal City with the funeral service also being held at the church on Wednesday, September 1, 2010, at noon. Pastor Tim Mitchem will be officiating. Entombment will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens Mausoleum in Prosperity.

Pallbearers will be his sons and grandsons.

In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that love gifts be given to the Bowers Hospice House, or to the Sunset Hills Missionary Baptist Church. The family also would like to thank Dr. Golden and his staff for the many years of care given to him and also to the staff of Bowers Hospice House for their love and care given to Darrell during his visit with him.

Charles Allen ‘Charlie’ Durrett

Charles Allen “Charlie” Durrett, 59, formerly of Fayetteville, passed away Monday, August 30, 2010, at Appalachian Regional Hospital, Beckley.

Born on June 26, 1951, in Montgomery, he was the son of the late William Thomas “Bill” Durrett and Roberta Pauline Arbaugh Durrett.

Mr. Durrett taught physical education at Daniels Elementary from 1977-1989. He taught drivers education and coached girls’ softball at Woodrow Wilson High School from 1989-2008 where he was instrumental in developing the girls’ softball complex.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Robin Basman Durrett of Beckley; daughters, Sarah Durrett of Beckley, and Rebecca Cottle-Makhene and husband, Moe, of Manassas, Va., and their two children, Drew and Eli; son, Paul Cottle and wife, Megan Turnock, of British Columbia, Canada; two brothers, William Thomas “Tom” Durrett and wife, Loretta, of St. Albans, and Gary Evans Durrett and wife, Van, of The Villages, Fla.; two sisters, Elizabeth Ellen “Betsy” Turner and husband, Bruce, of Dayton Beach, Fla., and Roberta Ann “Anne” Carte and husband, Andy, of Fayetteville; nieces and nephews, Stephen Durrett, Mark Durrett, Denise Matthews and Doug Turner; and a host of other family and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, September 1, 2010, at Dodd-Payne-Hess Funeral Home, Fayetteville, with Pastor Jackie Pittman officiating. Burial will follow in Huse Memorial Park, Fayetteville.

The family will receive friends one hour before the funeral at the funeral home.

Wanda Delcie Cox Honaker

Wanda Delcie Cox Honaker, age 89, of Beckley, passed away on Sunday, August 29, 2010, at the Heartland of Beckley Nursing Home following a long illness.

Born on April 4, 1921, at Camp Creek, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late William Albert Cox and Cora May Lilly Cox.

Mrs. Honaker was a homemaker, and was a member of the Cross Point Church of God in Beckley, where she also served as a Sunday School teacher. Mrs. Honaker worked as a private sitter for the elderly for several years, and was a loving mother and grandmother. She had made her home in Beckley since 1971.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William Taft Honaker; a daughter, Jo Ann Doris Dvorak; brothers, Teddy, Bobby, Brice, Trevor, and Toy; sisters, Glenda, Twila, and JoAnn; and granddaughters, Angela Marie Bair, and Dana Slusarczyk.

Survivors include a daughter, Diana Bair and her husband Garry of Beckley; a granddaughter, Deadra Williams of Beckley; three grandsons, Justin Dvorak of Cleveland, Ohio, Jason Bair, and Christopher Bair, both of Beckley; two great-grandchildren, Nicholas Dvorak and John Alex Williams, both of Beckley; two great-great-grandchildren, Nicholas Philip Dvorak and Lucinda Nicole Dvorak of Beckley; a brother, Quinton Cox of Mobile, Ala., and one sister, Virginia Elizabeth Barber of Princeton.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel in Beckley, on Saturday, September 4, 2010, at 11 a.m. with Rev. Vondie Cook officiating. Burial will follow at the Tom Lilly Cemetery at Ghent.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday.

Pallbearers will be family members and friends.

Connie Sue Hubbard

Connie Sue Hubbard, 57, of Beckley, passed away Sunday, Aug. 29, 2010, in a Charleston hospital following a long illness.

A memorial service will be 7 p.m. today, Aug. 31, at the Hilltop Baptist Church, Midway, with Pastor Patrick Haynes officiating. Friends may visit with the family from 6 p.m. until service time today at the church. Refreshments will be served following the service.

Lena Adkins Hundley

ELTON — Lena Adkins Hundley, 80, of Elton, passed away Sunday, Aug. 29, 2010, at CAMC, Charleston, W.Va., following a short illness.

Born March 27, 1930, at Elton, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Calvin and Sallie Elizabeth Kincaid Adkins.

Lena attended Meadow Bridge Church of Christ.

She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

She was a homemaker and loved to cook.

Other than her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Dolphis Gene Hundley, in 2008; two sisters, Rosa Brown and Elsie Martin; and six brothers, Herbert, Teddy, Lewis, Wilson, Noah, and James Adkins.

Survivors include her daughter, Virginia Crane of Meadow Bridge; three grandchildren, Luke, Steven, and Kimberly Crane; her special friends, Richard and Lois Simms of Green Sulphur Springs, and Dee Richmond of Lockbridge, W.Va.

Services will be 7:30 p.m. today, Tuesday, at Wallace & Wallace Chapel in Rainelle. Burial will follow the next day in the McElhenney Cemetery at Grassy Meadows, beside her late husband.

Friends may call 6 to 7:30 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 1, 2010, at McElhenney Cemetery, Grassy Meadows.

Frances Greco King

CHESTER — Frances Greco King, 71, of Chester, died Sunday, August 29, 2010.

Mrs. King was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Dorothy Babcock Greco.

She was a member of the Women of the Moose.

She is survived by two daughters, Thresa Maria King and companion, Darrell, and Lisa Harrison; a son, John F. King; three grandchildren, Amy Harrison, “Gabby” King, Cheyenne King; a sister, Betty Jo Williams of Hinton, W.Va.; a brother, Frankie Greco of Beckley; a niece and three nephews, many family members and friends, and her dog, Coco.

A Memorial Service will be held 6 p.m. on Thursday, September 2, 2010, at the Hopewell Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son. Interment will be in West Virginia at a later date.

The family will receive friends following the service.

Marilyn Chaffin Miller

Marilyn Chaffin Miller, who grew up in Sophia, died Friday, Aug. 27, 2010, along with husband Melvin and daughter-in-law Tina in an automobile accident on Interstate 95 in northern Virginia. Mrs. Miller, 70, was a resident of Stafford, Va. She and her family were en route to Beckley to visit her family in this area.

William ‘Bill’ C. Pack Sr.

LANCASTER, Ohio — William “Bill” C. Pack Sr., 82, of Lancaster, passed away on Monday, August 30, 2010, at his residence surrounded by his family.

He was a Korean conflict veteran serving in the U.S. Army. He was a retired welder for Diamond Power and Specialty Co. with 25 years of service. He was a member of Bible Baptist Church and United Steel Workers Union.

The love of his life was his wife, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Virginia; sons, William C. (Masuko) Pack Jr. of Lancaster, Ohio, and Mark S. (Louise) Pack of Sugar Grove, Ohio; grandchildren, Tessa, Jessica, Kelly, Jeff, and Steve; eight great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Grace Pack, sisters and brothers.

A graveside service will be held 1:30 p.m. Thursday, September 2, 2010, at Mt. Zion Methodist Cemetery, Hinton, W.Va., with Pastor Roy Maple officiating.

Friends may visit 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday at the Frank E. Smith Funeral Home, 405 N. Columbus St., Lancaster, Ohio 43130.

Tommy Wayne Painter

SCARBRO — Tommy Wayne Painter, 58, of Scarbro, died on Thursday, August 26, 2010, at his home.

Born May 18, 1952, at Oak Hill, he was the son of the late Quincy Edward “Pete” and Edna Vermillion Painter.

He was preceded in death by his son, Duane Daniel Painter, on October 20, 2009, and a brother, Marvin Painter.

Survivors include brother, Danny Painter and wife Sherry of Oak Hill, their daughter Jennifer and her son Andrew, and their son Kevin; sister, Dorris Miller Collins and husband Tom of Parkersburg, and their daughter Cynthia; stepson, Karl Roseblock and wife, Tina, of Greenville, SC, and their children Christopher, Nicholas, and Natalie; stepdaughter, Michelle Roseblock Miller and husband Nathan of Oak Hill, and sons Daniel and James and nephew Mark of Ohio.

Memorial services will be 1 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 2, 2010, at Jones Avenue First Church of God, Oak Hill, with Rev. Ralph Shupe officiating.
