Elizabeth Faye Defibaugh

ANSTED — Elizabeth Faye Defibaugh, 92, of Ansted, passed away Thursday, May 2, 2013, following a long illness.

She was born September 29, 1920 in Jodie, W.Va. Elizabeth was the daughter of the late Ira Stone and Pearl Settle Elkins Stone. She was preceded in death by a son, Richard A. Holder, on January 5, 2010.

She was a willing and great volunteer to help her church or anyone in need of help. She was a public cook for restaurants and a member of Fresh Fountain Family Worship Center in Ansted.

Elizabeth is survived by one son, Howard Holder and Janis of Milford, Ohio; four brothers, Carl R. Stone Sr. and Daniel E. Stone, both of Ansted, Fred A. Stone of Ft. Mill, S.C. and William E. Stone of Chicago, Ill.; four grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Sunday, May 5, 2013, at the Fresh Fountain Worship Center in Ansted, with Pastor Jesse Smith officiating. Burial will follow in Restlawn Memory Gardens in Victor.

John W. ‘Jack’ Feller

 MULLENS — John W. “Jack” Feller, 90, died peacefully on Thursday, May 2, 2013, at his home on 12 Ridgeview Drive, Mullens. He was a lifelong resident of Mullens except for the time he was a student at West Virginia University, serving his country in the US Army Air Corps during World War II, and working for several insurance companies.

Jack was born on November 21, 1922 in Beckley. He was the son of the late Charles Vic Feller and Genevieve Wyand Feller.

In addition to his parents he is also preceded in death by his deeply loved first wife of 581⁄2 years, Margaret E. “Peggy” Cullington Feller who died in 2008 and an older brother, Captain Charles Harry Feller, an Army Air Corps pilot killed in action in France in 1944 during World War II.

The family he leaves behind includes his loving and devoted wife, Marion Brooks Feller; sons, Charles T. Feller and his wife, Victoria and John Steven Feller, all of Mullens; grandchildren, Derek S. Feller and his fiancée, Kayla Vaught, Brent T. Feller and Logan Marie Feller Collinsworth and her husband, Andrew, all of Beckley.

Jack graduated from Mullens High School in 1940 where he lettered in football and baseball. He then attended West Virginia University until 1942 when he enlisted in the US Army Corps, rising to the rank of Staff Sargent, serving with the Eighth Air Force in England and then with the Ninth Air Force in occupied Germany. (Jack and his family made numerous trips back to his Debach, England air base where he was instrumental in the reconstruction of the control tower, where he served.) He then returned to WVU where he graduating in 1948 and then worked for several insurance companies before returning to Mullens in 1952 to join his father in the CV Feller Insurance Agency until he retired in 1982.

Jack was a lifelong member of the First Presbyterian Church of Mullens where he served as Deacon, Elder, and Clerk of Session. For over six decades he was a member of Masonic Lodge #151 AF&AM, Beni Kedem Shrine, American Legion Post # 106, Lions Club, Loyal Order of the Moose, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #8238, and Mullens Area Chamber of Commerce.

Active in community service Jack served as Secretary of the Wyoming County Airport Authority while it was being built, director of the Coal Field Expressway, and Davis Stewart Orphanage as well as Little League and American Legion baseball programs.

After compiling and writing numerous books on the history of Mullens, Jack was named a West Virginia History Hero and a local railroad museum is named in his honor.

Funeral services will be 12 noon, Sunday, May 5, 2013 at the First Presbyterian Church of Mullens, with Rev. Tracy French officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park Memorial Mausoleum, Beckley.

The family will receive visitors from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, May 4, 2013 at the church and one hour prior to services Sunday.   

Members of Mullens Masonic Lodge #151 will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Carl Green, WIlliam "Sarge" McGhee, Lewis D'Antoni, Bill Lester, Orion Morgan, John Tice, Ray Roop, Morris Lusk, Joe Hill, and Joe Parsons.

In lieu of flowers donations of sympathy may be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Mullens P.O. Box 826 Mullens, WV 25882.

Nancy Carol Fox

SOUTH CHARLESTON — Nancy Carol Fox, 62, of South Charleston, passed away unexpectedly Sunday, April 21, 2013.

She was born in Fayetteville on December 25, 1950 and was a daughter of Nellie M. Fox of Fayetteville and the late David W. Fox.

In addition to her mother, Nancy is survived by her sister, Norma (Susie) Pauley and brother-in-law, Ray Pauley of St. Albans; her sister Sandra Mullins and brother-in-law, Tom Mullins of Fayetteville; and brothers, Richard Fox of Orrville, Ohio and Larry Fox of Lorain, Ohio.

She will be dearly missed by the three nieces she considered her daughters, Cindy Pauley Raines, Micki Stephens and Crystal Pauley and by their families. She will also be missed by her other niece, Jessica Bates and her family and her nephew, David Mullins.

Nancy was a devoted animal lover and is also survived by her beloved cat, Abby.  She was preceded in death by her three beloved dogs, Pansie, Tobi and Chloe.

She was a long time employee with Mason and Barry Control Tech.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Sunday, May 5, 2013 at Casdorph & Curry Funeral Home, 110 B Street, St. Albans, with visitation starting at 1 p.m.

Alva Ann Cline Gunter

On Wednesday, the 1st day of May, 2013, after a long and full life of 101 years, three months and three days, our most cherished, Alva Cline Gunter of Joseph Street, Beckley, passed away at the Raleigh General Hospital.  

Known affectionately as “Granny” in the later years of her life, Alva was born on Jan. 28th, 1912, at Davy. One of seven children, Alva’s parents were the late Jasper C. and Sallie Musick Cline. Her husband, Herbert Clayton Gunter, her daughter, Donna Lynn Gunter Francisco, her sisters, Naoma Green and Theda Collins and brothers, Carmel, Aubrey, Wardy and Ray have preceded her in death.

A retired school teacher, having taught for 40 years in Wyoming and Raleigh counties, she finished her teaching career in 1972, while teaching at Crab Orchard.

Alva was a graduate of Mullens High School and Concord College. She was an active member of the Hollywood Missionary Baptist Church of MacArthur for over 50 years, where she taught the Ladies Bible Class for more than 40 years.

An active and independent woman to the end, Alva was blessed with a keen mind until the day of her passing.

She is survived by her grandson, Brian Francisco and his wife, Sherri; son-in-law, David Francisco and his wife, Jenny; a great granddaughter, Meggin Harmon; a great great grandson, Zayne Khristain Flannery; 11 nieces and nephews survive; as well as her faithful caregivers, Dana Bailey and Robin Acord.

On Sunday, May 5th, at 5 p.m. we will celebrate the life of Alva with a “Home Going Service” at the Hollywood Missionary Baptist Church. Rick Martin and Tommy Wallace will be officiating.   Alva will be laid to rest in the Mt. Tabor Cemetery beside Herbert. And now… “Oh Glad Reunion.”  The family will receive friends from 3 p.m. until the service hour at the church.

In lieu of flowers the family has requested that donations be made to Hollywood Missionary Baptist Church, 155 Luray Street, MacArthur WV 25873.

Margie Lafferty

MIDDLESBORO, Ky. — Margie Lafferty, 85, of Middlesboro, went home to be with the Lord of Wednesday, May 1, 2013.

Born August 30, 1927, she was a daughter of the late William and Dorothea Smith Tingle.

Margie loved to go camping, fishing and shopping. She was an avid reader and loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Margie was a 20 year member of the Midway Church of God.

In addition to her parents, Margie is preceded in death by her husband, Larkin Lafferty.

Those left to cherish her memory include her daughter, Julia Pitt of Middlesboro, KY; sons, Lawrence Lafferty and wife Anita of Havelock, NC, Michael Lafferty and wife Pamela of Sparta, NC, Steven Lafferty and wife Debbie of Bluefield, WV; six grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Louise Treadway of Beckley, WV and Juanita Tingle of Crab Orchard; special friends, Elva Taylor of Midway, Lucy Foley of Sophia, and Herb and Lorraina Milam of Midway; also a host of nieces and nephews.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, May 6, 2013 at Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley with Pastor Richard Walker and Pastor Jason Albertson officiating. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers will be Michael Lafferty Jr. Christopher Williams, Jeremy Lafferty, Shawn Martin, John Lafferty and Joey Lafferty.

Irene Lusk

LAKE SHAWNEE — Irene “Teenie” Lusk, 88, of Lake Shawnee, died Thursday, May 2, 2013, at Princeton Community Hospital.

Born May 20, 1924 at Rhodell she was the daughter of the late George Blankenship and Victoria Graham Blankenship Hensley.

Mrs. Lusk was a homemaker and attended Sweet Home Baptist Church in Princeton.  She enjoyed canning, crocheting and quilting. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Roy Kermit Lusk in 2011; one son, Otis Rehm Sr.; one daughter, Sharon Snuffer; three sisters, Gracie, Letha and Etta; five brothers, Fred, Carl, Willard, Herbert and George and one grandson.

Survivors include one daughter, Kyla Pacitto of South Daytona, Fla.; one step-son, Roy T. Lusk and wife Pat of Conway, S.C.; one step-daughter, Linda Faye Mullens and husband Randall of Beckley; daughter-in-law, Melody Rehm of Kegley; two sisters-in-law, Willa Mae Blankenship Haynes of Lashmeet and Juanita Blankenship Culler of Princeton; grandchildren, Bob, Roby, Vickey, Fred, Gracie, Desi and Otis Jr.; step-grandchildren, great grandchildren, step-great grandchildren and step-great-great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, May 5, 2013 at the Rowland H. Bailey Funeral Chapel of the Bailey-Kirk Funeral Home in Princeton, with Pastors Thurmond Belcher and Kevin Belcher officiating. Interment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Princeton.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Barbara Ann Frazier Wood

OAK HILL — Barbara Ann Frazier Wood, 55, of Oak Hill, died on Thursday, May 2, 2013, at Appalachian Regional Hospital, Beckley.

Born May 28, 1957, at Bad Hersfeld, Germany, she was the daughter of the late William Howard and Cristeen Schada Frazier and stepdaughter of June Badgett of White Plains, N.C.

She was a nursing assistant and a member of the Christian Church.

A brother, William Frazier Jr., preceded her in death.

Survivors include her son, Jerry Wood Jr. of Scarbro; her former husband, Jerry Wood Sr. of Scarbro; three brothers, James Frazier of King, N.C., Robert Frazier of Oak Hill and Tony Frazier of Lincolnton, N.C.; and two sisters, Mary Ann Watson of Mt. Airy, N.C. and Carmen Mercado-Shade of Puerto Rico.

She is also survived by two grandchildren, Landyn Wood and Kayle Wood, both of Scarbro.

Services will be 3 p.m. Saturday, May 4, 2013, at Tyree Funeral Home in Oak Hill, with the Rev. Larry Humphrey officiating.

Friends may call one hour prior to the service on Saturday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Wood will be cremated following the service.
