Christopher Columbus Copley

Christopher Columbus Copley, 91, of Daniels, went home to be with his Lord, on Sunday, April 28, 2013 in the Bowers Hospice House, Beckley.

Born October 7, 1921 in Hardy, Ky., he was the son of the late Allen and Mary Lawson Copley.

Mr. Copley was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps, serving proudly during the war to end all wars, World War II; from 1940 until 1946 he served in the South Pacific Islands on Okinawha and Guam. After returning home he sought out to help other veterans by volunteering at the Beckley VA Medical Center for over 28 years. In 2001 he was given the award as Volunteer of the year, and was inducted in to the Volunteer Hall of Fame, with over 15,000 hours as a volunteer. He was a member of the Gospel Chapel for over 43 years where he served as a Sunday School Teacher, Church Treasurer, and a Board Member.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his loving wife, Florence Copley; his brothers, James, Ted, and Junior Copley; his sister, Eva Copley Hatcher.

Those left to cherish his memory include his four daughters, Janice Richmond and her husband, Douglas of Beaver, Gwyn Rismiller and her husband, Tom of Versaillies, Ohio, Mary Cooper and her husband, Roger of Beaver, and Lois Sexton and her husband, Roger of Daniels; a son, Franklin Steve Copley of White Oak; twelve grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, and beloved friends.

Services celebrating the life of Mr. Copley will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, May 2, 2013, at Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley, with Rev. Luke Richmond officiating. Following the service he will be laid to rest in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. Military graveside rights will be performed by the American Legion Post No. 32 Honor Guard of Beckley.

His grandchildren will serve as pallbearers.

Friends may gather with the family Wednesday, May 1, 2013, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
