Auda Mae Brown Cook

OCEANA — Auda Mae Brown Cook was the daughter of the late William Elmer Brown and Susie Bailey Brown. She was the last surviving member of her family; she was preceded in death by her siblings, Hurley Brown, Dora Walker and Joe Brown. She was born February 17, 1918, at Craney, WV, and passed from this life March 22, 2013, at the age of 95 years.

Mrs. Cook was the wife of the late James Gilbert Cook who preceded her in death on March 14, 2002.

She was the loving mother of the late Gilbert Gerald Cook, a stillborn baby in 1937, Jerry T. Cook, with whom she made her home, and Geraldine Faye Cook Walker who passed away in 2004.

She enjoyed her grandchildren, Elizabeth Karen (Mike) Growe, Lela Dawn Walker and Matthew Jackson (Megan) Walker, and her four great-grandchildren, Hannah Nicole Growe, Michael Growe, Madilyn Walker and Whitney Walker. She also enjoyed having several nieces and nephews in her life. Other special people in her life were Linda Allen, Scott Hatfield and Sandra Holmes.

Mrs. Cook was a homemaker all of her life and greatly enjoyed cooking, baking cakes and sewing.

At the time of her death, she was the oldest member of Toneda Baptist Church.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday, March 25, 2013, at Evans Funeral Home chapel, with her pastor, the Rev. James Hamrick, officiating. She will be laid to rest at Cook Cemetery, located behind Toneda Baptist Church. Friends may gather with her family 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, March 24th, at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Gideon International or Alzheimer’s Foundation.

Ruth Ann Miles Dillon

Ruth Ann Miles Dillon of Shady Spring passed away on Thursday, March 21, 2013, after a long illness.

Ruth was born on May 3, 1937, in Grandview, W.Va., and spent 23 years as an Army wife traveling throughout the United States, and living for six years in Germany before returning to WV. Ruth lived in Shady Spring for the last 34 years.

Ruth was a loving and dedicated wife and mother, and she spent her life as a positive force in the lives of those she loved.

She was preceded in death by her son, Charles Michael Dillon, in January, 2013, her grandson, Eric Michael Dillon, in 2009, and her parents, Russell Jackson and Ida Belle Miles.

Ruth is survived by her devoted husband of 57 years, Charles F. Dillon of Shady Spring, her daughter and son-in-law, Karen A. and Keith Cook of Roanoke, Va., granddaughter, Katherine Cook Cheslow of Roanoke, grandsons, Adam S. Dillon of Shady Spring, and Ryan Dillon of Coal City, W.Va., a great-granddaughter, Tessa S. Dillon, and great-grandson, Eli M. Dillon, both of Shady Spring. Also surviving are sisters, Elaine Wills of Grandview, W.Va., Mary Hench of Chesapeake, Va., and her brother, Jack Miles of Daniels, W.Va. Additional survivors include nieces, nephews, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.

Ruth loved going to the beach and listening to the ocean. Ruth enjoyed reading, working puzzles and “NCIS.” Most of all, Ruth enjoyed her family. Ruth was a strong, kind-hearted woman who always looked for the best in people. She tried to always find the positive and praise it. Ruth’s memory will be treasured and will live on with those who loved her. “I love you Mom — that’s a given.” “They are not dead who live in the hearts they leave behind.”

Novona Parker Hacker

CINCINNATI, Ohio — On Wednesday, March 20th, 2013, the first day of spring, our beloved Novona Parker Hacker passed away at her home in Cincinnati, Ohio. She was 43 years of age.

One of three children, Novona Carol Parker was born at Cleveland, OH, on Dec. 3rd, 1969. She was the precious daughter of Clayton and Carol J. Allen Parker who make their home in Bradley. Novona was the granddaughter of Ralph and Josephine Allen of Bradley as well and the late William “Bill” and Inis Ferguson Parker.

Novona spent her childhood in Woodbridge, Virginia, and Topeka, Kansas, where she graduated from Topeka High School. She has made her home in the Cincinnati, Ohio, area for the past five years. Our sweet Novona will be remembered for her love of life. She had a love for poetry and had a great fondness for cats. Her faithful feline companion, Harley, “Has Crossed Over the Rainbow Bridge.”

In addition to her parents and maternal grandparents, Novona leaves to cherish her memory her dear husband, Jerry Hacker of Cincinnati; she was the fond sister of Tony R. Parker and his wife, Paula, of Richwood, OH, and Joseph C. Parker of Locust Grove, VA; she was the kind aunt of Vincent, Devon, Morgan, Jordan, Ayla and Aidan; she leaves an extended family of aunts, uncles and cousins and many friends.

On Monday, March 25th, at 1 p.m., we will remember the life of Novona with a “Service of Remembrance” at the Melton Mortuary Chapel. Pastor Darrell Fuller will be officiating. Novona will be laid to rest in the Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens at Prosperity. The family will receive friends from noon until the service hour. Family members and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Lucy Glenna Tilley Halsey

MATHENY — Lucy Glenna Tilley Halsey, 90, passed away Thursday, March 21, 2013, at Wyoming Nursing and Rehab Center following a long illness.

Born January 20, 1923, in Wyoming County, she was the daughter of the late William Riley and Almeda Kelly Tilley. Lucy was a member of the Coon Fork Church at Keyrock and enjoyed crocheting, gardening, and working in her flowers. She also worked for many years with her late husband at the Castle Rock Bank in Pineville.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years Woodrow Halsey, an infant son, Woodrow Halsey, Jr., an infant daughter Trilla Faye Halsey, four brothers, Jess, Carl, Lonnie, and Garland Tilley, three sisters, Mildred, Vadie, and Irene.

Survivors include: 2 Sons: Cyril Halsey and wife Maxine of Concord, NH, and Gary Halsey and wife Geraldine of Keyrock; 1 Daughter: Almeda Holding of Nettleton, MS; 1 Brother: Riley Tilley and wife Irene of Richmond, VA; 2 Sisters: Thelma Brooks of Glen Fork and Faye Pruitt of High Point, NC; 8 Grandchildren; 14 Great-Grandchildren; 3 Great-Great-Grandchildren; Her special faithful friend “Bullet” her dog.

A Celebration of Lucy’s life will be held at 12 p.m. Monday, March 25, 2013, in the Chapel of Calfee Funeral Service with Rev. Gary Ford and Mr. James “Bimbo” McCracken officiating. Burial will follow in Palm Memorial Gardens, Matheny. Friends may gather with the family from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Monday at the Funeral Home.

Luther C. Hylton Sr.

On Wednesday, the first day of spring, March 20th, 2013, our most cherished, Luther Carl Hylton Sr., went to be with the Lord, after a courageous 14-month battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 65 years of age.

Born on March 11th, 1948, in Beckley, he was the son of the late Bige and Juanita Smith Hylton. Luther spent his childhood in Sophia. His father and mother-in-law, Jerry and Ersie Harmon of Stanaford, have preceded him in death as well.

Luther was a member of the Beckley Masonic Lodge # 95 AF&AM, and the Scottish Rite of Free Masonry of Charleston. In the 1960s, he worked at Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital. He had served in the WV National Guard. An electrician in the mines, Luther had worked for Eastern Associated Coal and AT Massey, retiring in 2004.

In his retirement, Luther loved to watch his grandsons play football and travel to visit his granddaughters. He loved fishing his favorite trout creek or hunting with his family at Green Bank. He immensely enjoyed spending time with his dog, Caliou; summers spent in the camper at Pipestem with Carolyn was a treasured time.

He leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife of 45 years, Carolyn Harmon Hylton; he was the dear father of Wendy Murdock and her husband, Marvin, of Beaver, Luther Hylton Jr., and his wife, Marilyn, of Clarksville, TN.

Luther was the proud grandfather of Andrew and Daniel Murdock, Lindsey, Iray and Katy Hylton; he has been blessed with a great-grandson, Talon Hylton.

He was the fond brother of Dorothy Craddock of Crab Orchard, Linda Hylton of Prosperity; Larry Hylton and his wife, Cathy, of Pineville, Penney Burleson and her husband, Ronnie, of Prosperity; several nieces and nephews also survive.

On Monday, March 25th, at 7 p.m. in the evening we will remember the life of this good man with a “Service of Remembrance” at the Melton Mortuary Chapel. Rev. George Wood will be officiating. The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. until the service hour.

At the end of the day when we his family remember Luther, we recall a man “Who never knew a stranger and a stranger was never the same after they met him. He was loved by all that knew him.”

Ronnie Joe Lusk

OCEANA — Ronnie Joe Lusk, age 54, of Oceana, passed away Thursday, March 21, 2013, following a sudden illness.

Born May 16, 1958, in Logan, W.Va., a son to the late Joseph C. Lusk and Vernola Lucille Lucas Lusk.

Ronnie went to Oceana High School and then served our country in the United States Army where he was honorably discharged. He has over 30 years of experience in hauling coal for numerous coal companies in southern West Virginia and was currently employed with Mason Trucking. He was also an avid NASCAR fan.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a brother, Joseph C. Lusk Jr.; paternal grandparents, Hayes and Orpha Lusk; and his maternal grandparents, Vernon and Velma Lucas.

Those surviving include his daughter, Veronica Rine and husband Nick of Beckley; son, Joey Lusk of Oceana; brother, Donnie Lusk and companion Linda Derringer of Fairdale; sister, Franchiski “Ann” Dixon and husband Richard of Oceana; aunts, Tressie Isaacs and Sybil Bogdanski of West Hamlin and Dovie and Brookie Lusk of Huff Creek; nephews, Jason Lusk and companion Angela of Mabscott, Calen and Zeb Dixon of Oceana; nieces, Roncheski Bailey and husband Jason of Crany, Amanda Lusk and companion David Thompson of MacArthur, and Karmen Dixon of Oceana; great-nieces, Ella and Olivia Bailey of Crany, and Bre’Aunna Thompson and Kayleigh Lusk of MacArthur; and a stepgranddaughter, Cameron Brooke Rine of Oceana.

Services to celebrate the life of Ronnie Joe will be conducted 1 p.m. Monday, March 25, 2013, at the Turkey Ridge Baptist Church in Turkey Dip with Pastor Johnny Jones officiating. Interment will follow at Palm Memorial Gardens in Matheny where the Wyoming County Veterans Honor Guard will conduct military graveside rites.

The gentlemen serving as pallbearers will be Jason Lusk, Calen Dixon, Zeb Dixon, Jason Bailey, Warren Adkins, Danny Spears, and Johnny “Smokey” Blankenship.

A visitation will be held on Sunday evening from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Turkey Ridge Baptist Church.

Thelma M. Riser

OAK HILL — Thelma M. Riser, age 71, of Oak Hill, WV, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Thursday, March 21, 2013, at Plateau Medical Center in Oak Hill after a long illness.

Born February 5, 1942, in Oak Hill, WV, she was the daughter of the late Ray and Lucille Taylor Buckland.

Thelma was a sales clerk at Big Lots and attended and was baptized at the Cunard Baptist Church.

She had been a resident of Fayette Continuous Care since January 2005.

She was preceded in death by his first husband, Roy Treadway, a great-granddaughter, Caroline, a brother, Edward Buckland, and a sister, Anna Mae Treadway.

Surviving are her loving husband, James “Jim” Riser, Jr., of Oak Hill, WV, her son, Roy Treadway and his wife Lavon of Oak Hill, two daughters, Shirl Vaughn and her husband Richard of Oak Hill, Kathy Landers and her husband Roger of Fayetteville, WV, one stepson, Jay Riser and his wife Michele of Charleston, SC, seven grandchildren, Jason, Jennifer and husband Greg, Tina, R.J., Jessica, Richard and his wife Dorothy, Rebecca “Becky” and her husband Ben, stepgrandchildren, Taylor and Jordan, five great-grandchildren, Eric, Faith, Jasper, Liberty and Josiah.

Also surviving are three brothers, Tommy Buckland and wife Linda, Charlie Buckland and wife Kathy, all of Fayetteville, WV, and Lee Buckland and his wife Judy of Oak Hill, WV, as well as several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, March 25, 2013, at the Tyree Funeral Home, Oak Hill, with Gary Lilly officiating. Burial will follow in High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill, WV.

Ruth Marie Wilcox

CHARLESTON — Ruth Marie Wilcox, 95, of Edgewood Summit, Charleston, formerly of Beckley, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, March 20, 2013.

Ruth was born September 11, 1917, in Blowing Rock, NC, to Jesse L. and Maude Nichols Hamlet.

She was a member of Crab Orchard Baptist Church for over 70 years. She was a member of American Baptist Women and Daughters of the American Revolution. She served on the Board of Trustees of Alderson-Broaddus College from 1983-2001, and on the College’s Board of Governors from 2002-present. She and her husband were instrumental in the creation of The Wilcox Chapel on the campus of the college.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Basil K. Wilcox; her daughter, Dr. Frances Wilcox; her infant brother, Leonard; and her sister Edythe Dunlap McGrath.

Those left to cherish her memories include her sons, Dwight (Ellen) Wilcox of Highland, Md., and Ken (Donetta) Wilcox of Charleston, W.Va.; grandchildren, Dwight Wilcox II, Reverend Diana Wilcox, Emily Hoyer, Molly Lyons, Kelly Cook, Sarah Jenkins, Madison Wilcox and Winter Wilcox; great-grandchildren, Dwight Wilcox III, Peter Wilcox, Daniel Wilcox, Sadie Lyons, Jill Lyons, Fiona Lyons, Cameron Cook, Taylor Cook, McKinley Jenkins and Gait Jenkins.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, March 25, 2013, at Crab Orchard Baptist Church with Pastor Mike Sisson officiating. Entombment will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers will be Dwight Wilcox III, Peter Wilcox, Daniel Wilcox, Pete Graham, Dick Cook, and Jim Bond.

Friends may gather with the family Sunday from 5 to 7 p.m. at Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley.
