Stella Josephine McClary Bell

UNION — Stella Josephine McClary Bell, 93, of Union, passed away March 23, 2014.

Funeral services will be held noon Friday, March 28, 2014, at the Groves Funeral Home Chapel in Union with the Rev. Jimmy Rogers, her son, David Bell and Dr. Rick Vogel officiating.

Burial will follow at the Carmel Cemetery, at Gap Mills, W.Va.

Friends may call at the Groves Funeral Home in Union from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, March 27, 2014.

WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS — Mr. Herman W. Carpenter, 70, of White Sulphur Springs, died Saturday, March 22, 2014.

PEARISBURG, Va. — William Allen Comer, 61, of Pearisburg, a native of Adairs Run, W.Va., passed away Monday, March 24, 2014.

It was Bill’s request to be cremated. A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Marjorie ‘Margie’ L. Crowder

SOUTH CHARLESTON — Marjorie “Margie” L. Crowder, age 99, of South Charleston, formerly of Prosperity, passed away on Sunday, March 23, 2014.

Born on the 14th day on June in 1914 in McAlpin, W.Va., to the late Eugene S. Floyd and Dora E. Wilson Floyd.

Ms. Crowder was a homemaker and had been a previous member of Memorial Baptist Church in Beckley. She lived in Prosperity most of her life before residing in Charleston for the past seven years.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband of 45 years prior to his passing, Mr. John Thomas Crowder; daughter, Audrey Joan Broyles; four sisters and four brothers.

Those left to carry on her legacy include her sons, Richard Crowder and wife Brenda and Roger Crowder and wife Marlene; daughter, Shirley Fannin; brother, James Floyd; seven grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild also survive her.

A celebration of life service for Margie will be conducted at 1 p.m. on Thursday, March 27, 2014, at the Blue Ridge Funeral Home Chapel in Prosperity with Dr. Charles Bright officiating. Entombment will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens Mausoleum in Prosperity.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Friends may call from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the funeral home on Thursday.

Beatrice D. Farr

Beatrice D. Farr, 91, of Lester, passed away Sunday, March 23, 2014.

Born August 8, 1922, in Otsego, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late William Amos and Ollie Bailey Tolliver.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Carl S. Farr; sister, Margaret Meadows and brothers, John and Malcolm Tolliver.

Beatrice was a homemaker and grandma. She loved to garden and was a member of the Cornerstone Freewill Baptist Church in Crab Orchard. She had been a long time resident of Lester.

Survivors include her sons, David (Dusty) and Scotty Farr and wife Diana of Lester; grandchildren Sherry, David, Tammy, Buffy, Walter Scott and Elizabeth; brothers, Max Tolliver of Ft. Myers, Fla. and Lee Tolliver of Franklin, Va.; niece, Dorothy Cochran and husband Jeff of Tennessee; a very special friend, Teressa Tessaro and a host of other family and friends.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday in the Calfee Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Roger Tolliver officiating. Friends may visit with the family one hour prior to service on Wednesday. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens

Patricia Hatfield Kent Johnston, 86, of Beckley, died Monday, March 24th, 2014.

Jaxon Dean Perone

At 9:40 a.m. on Sunday, March 23rd, 2014, our precious Jaxon Dean Perone, died at the University of Virginia Children’s Hospital in Charlottesville, Va.

Born at 6:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 22nd, 2014, at Raleigh General Hospital in Beckley, Jaxon was the infant son of Aaron and Lyndsey Campbell Perone. In the one day, three hours, and ten minutes that God allowed him to spend with us, the love and happiness he gave us will be forever imprinted on our hearts.

Surviving in addition to his parents are his brothers, Cameron Scott and Joshua Aaron; grandparents, Phillip and Brenda Perone and Rick and Bonita Campbell, as well as many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Services will be conducted at 6 p.m. Thursday, March 27th 2014, at Northgate Baptist Church, 301 Pinewood Drive, Beckley, with visitation two hours prior to the service. Pastor Craig Stevens will be officiaitng.

Jaxon’s family wishes to express special appreciation to the staff of UVA Children’s Hospital, NICU Unit; Raleigh General Hospital third floor nursing staff, and most of all Dr. Ahmad Khiami, for showing us immeasurable compassion for fighting valiantly to save our little angel.

Reba Ann Reed

PRINCETON — Reba Ann Reed, 73, of Princeton, formerly of Stanley, N.C., died Sunday, March 23, 2014 at her home.

Lawrence Sampson

Lawrence R. Sampson, age 92 of Beckley, died peacefully at home on Monday, March 24, 2014, after a six week battle with cancer.

He was born on October 22, 1921, at Stotesbury, W.Va., and was the son of Vere and Evelyn Garrison Sampson. Lawrence was also preceded in death by his wife 55 years, Ann Jeanette “Dolly” Sampson in 2001, and by a son-in-law Michael “Mickey” O’Dell in 2007.

Survivors are as follows: A sister Mabel Sampson of Beckley, daughters, Sharon O’Dell and Marcia Sheets and her husband Dana, all of Beckley; sons, Lawrence Sampson Jr. and his wife Debbie of Wilkesboro, N.C., David Sampson and his wife Natalie of Charleston, W.Va., and Greg Sampson of Charleston, W.Va.; five grandchildren and nine great grandchildren also survive.

Lawrence attended Beckley area schools and Beckley College. He was also a graduate of Comer Electrical School in Chicago, Ill. Lawrence  served in World War II in the U.S. Army Air Corps as a tail gunner in the South Pacific and was honorably discharged as a staff sergeant in 1946. He returned to Beckley where he worked as a civil engineer for Vecellio and Grogan, and later for Ranger Fuel and Pittson Coal Companies until his retirement at the age of 62. He was also self-employed as a land surveyor which he continued doing until his failing eyesight forced him to retire.

Lawrence was an avid  gardener and enjoyed spending time with family and friends. He was a member of the Beckley Loyal Order of the Moose.

Services will be conducted Saturday, March 29, 2014, at 12:30 p.m. at the Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel in Beckley with Lighthouse Baptist Church Pastor, Larry Cochran officiating. Entombment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park Mausoleum in Beckley. Visitation will be held from 10:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. on Saturday at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Jon O’Dell, Joe O’Dell, Brian Sampson, Dana Sheets, Shawn Sheets, Alex Sheets, Matt Sampson, and Jason McMillan. Military graveside rites will be conducted by the American Legion Post #32 Honor Guard.

The family expresses a special thank you to the Veterans Administration and Hospice of Southern WV who arranged and provided care throughout our father’s illness and an extra heartfelt gratitude to his home caregiver, Lanissa Lykins, who made it possible for him to stay in the comfort of his home during his final days.

Charles Thomas Scarbro

Charles Thomas Scarbro 68, of Beckley, went home to be with his Lord on Monday, March 24, 2014, in Raleigh General Hospital, following a long illness.

He was born on August 29, 1945, the oldest son to the late Speed and Evelyn Ash Scarbro. He was preceded in death by his son, Charles Thomas Scarbro II, and brother Kenneth Wayne Scarbro.

Charles spent 30 years in the coal mining industry and retired as a state mine inspector. He enjoyed rebuilding antique cars, attending car shows, racing cars, and working in his garage. He won many awards and trophies in races and car shows. Most importantly, Charles was a devoted family man. He was deeply loved and will be deeply missed. We take comfort in knowing that he is now with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Deanna Milam Scarbro of Beckley, his daughter Beth Scarbro Christian of Beckley; his brothers Ronnie Scarbro and his wife Kathy of Glen Daniel, and Terry Scarbro of Masseyville; his grandchildren, John Christian of Beckley, Amy Christian of Beckley, Charles Scarbro III of Rock Creek, Megan Scarbro of Rock Creek, and Luke Scarbro of North Carolina; mother-in-law Edna Pettry of Beckley; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and Friends.

Services celebrating the Life of Charles will be held Thursday at 1 p.m. in the Chapel of Blue Ridge Funeral Home with the Rev. Donnie Russell officiating, with a special eulogy given by Ron Harris.

Pallbearers will be John Christian, Charles Scarbro III, Luke Scarbro, Jason Vance, Keith Scarbro, Speed Scarbro, Dallas Phipps and Tommy Cochran.

Following the service Charles will be laid to rest in the Miller Cemetery in Rock Creek.

Friends may gather with the family from noon until service time Thursday at the funeral home.

KEYROCK — Connie Sue Shumate, 51, of Keyrock, passed away Friday, March 21, 2014, following a long illness.

Born September 5, 1962, at Mullens, she was the daughter of Teddy and Betty McCoy Shumate

Connie was of the Baptist faith. She enjoyed working in flowers, cleaning house, animals and being with her family and friends.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Terry Shumate.

Survivors include her parents, Teddy and Betty Shumate of Keyrock; a son, Alex Scott Corker of Richmond, Va.; two daughters, Christina Clark and her companion Kevin Hawks of Keyrock and Crystal Mills and her companion Kris Mullins of Keyrock; a brother, Keith Shumate and wife, Peggy of Keyrock; two sisters, Karen May and her companion Bill Counts of Pineville and Joann Lambert and her companion, Bronson Davidson of Montcalm; three grandchildren, Haley Grace Mills, Faith Alexandrea Mills and Adrien Lucas Gage Clark. She is also survived by several nieces, nephews, three great-nephews and a great-niece.

A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m., Wednesday, March 26, 2014, at Palm Memorial Gardens, Matheny, with Elder Russell McCoy officiating.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Mary Elizabeth Trout

MONROE, N.C. — Mary Elizabeth Trout, 61, died Sunday, March 23, 2014, at her residence.

Graveside services will be held 3 p.m. Thursday, March 27, 2014, at the Cooper Cemetery, 306 Meadow Camp Road, Meadow Bridge.

Mary was born June 26, 1952, in Hinton, and was the daughter of the late Ralph Trout and Marie Martin Trout of Hinton. She was a U.S. Air Force veteran.

She was preceded in death by her son, Lee Cooper in 2002.

In addition to her mother, Mary is survived by her daughter, Misty Wall and husband, Joe of Monroe; brothers, David Trout and Ralph Trout Jr., both of Hinton, and James Trout of Talcott; sisters, Dorothy Keeney of Charleston, and Shirley Dillon of Crab Orchard, and three grandchildren, Christina Wall, Alysha Wall and Joseph Wall.

William ‘Wade’ Waddell

William “Wade” Waddell, went home to be with his heavenly father on Friday, March 21, 2014, after a long illness.

Wade was born on March 10, 1941, in Pennman, W.Va.  

He was preceded in death by loving mother and father Wade C. and Mary Janet Waddell; sisters, Laurel Hicks and Jeanie Waddell; granddaughter Caressa Perry and great-grandson, Jase Jones.

Wade was a loving son, brother, husband, father and PaPaw. He enjoyed working hard, tractors and most of all, spending quality time with his family.  

Those left to cherish his memory include his loving wife of 52 years, Elizabeth Ann; daughter, Janet A. (Mickey) Pack; sons, William “Bill” Wade (Cathy) Waddell Jr. and John K. (Dara) Waddell. Six grandchildren: Lindsay (Daniel) Pack, Megan (Kevin) Pack-Brown, Jared Waddell, Aaron (Heather) Wyrick, Catie Perry and Brittany Waddell. Four great-grandchildren: Tatum Cranford, Brayden and Dakota Wyrick and Raelynn Hatfield. Sisters, Abigail (John) Scott and Ardith (Tony) Jessup. Sister-in-law, Brenda (Danny) Tyree and brother-in-law, Eddie (Leesa) Lester. Many nieces, nephews and special friends.  

Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 29, 2014, at Rose and Quesenberry Shady Spring Chapel, at 2:30 p.m. Visitation will be held prior to the service, from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m., at the funeral home. Wade will be laid to rest directly after the service at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Prosperity, W.Va.  

The family would like to thank the Neuro ICU Team at Forsyth Memorial Hospital for their loving care.

Donna Rae ‘Donnie’ Wiggins

FAIRMONT — Our dearest Donna Rae “Donnie” Wiggins, 53, of Fairmont, W.Va., died on Monday, March 24, 2014, at United Hospital Center in Bridgeport, W.Va.

Born October 3, 1960, at Oak Hill, she was the daughter of Alvin Ray and Mary “Kate” Couch Wiggins of Bridgeport.

Donnie left an impression on the people she met where ever she went. She was a special person, blessed with strength and determination. Her passing has left a hole in our hearts.

In addition to her devoted parents, Donnie is survived by a loving family which includes her big sis, Bev Lopez and husband, John of Bridgeport; her little brother, Chad Wiggins and wife, Kristy of Cincinnati, Ohio; nephew, Ben Lopez and wife, Lauren of Columbus, Ohio; niece, Ali Frush and husband, Mike of Fairmont as well as many aunts, uncles, friends and caregivers.

Funeral services will be on Thursday, March 27, 2014, at 1 p.m. at Tyree Funeral Home in Oak Hill, with Rev. Mackie Million officiating. Burial will be at High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.

Cynthia ‘Cindy’ Ann Robertson Wilson

Cynthia “Cindy” Ann Robertson Wilson, born January 1, 1975, in Beckley, met her Lord and Savior on Friday, March 21, 2014.

Cindy was a member of Eccles 1st Baptist Church. She enjoyed time with family and friends, arts and crafts, watching her children play sports and fishing; and, being an adventurous soul she also enjoyed rafting and motor cycle riding.

Cindy was preceded in death by her mother Kimberly Wilburn and husband Phillip T. Wilson, and biological father, James Robertson.

Those left to cherish the memory of Cindy include her father, Gerald Wilburn; daughter, Savannah M. Wilson; sons, William (Billy) D. Wilson, Phillip A. Wilson and Elijah T. Wilson; brothers, Gerald Wilburn Jr. (Kelly) and their children Jada and Ty and Matthew Craddock (Lyndsey) and their child, Landon; mother-in-law, Brenda Wilson-Lewis; father and mother-in-law, Phillip L. and Elizabeth Wilson; sisters-in-law, Lori Buchanan (Michael) and their children, Eryn and Ryan and Jennifer Deakins and her daughter, Gabrielle; brother-in-law, James Deakins and his son, Deacon J. Deakins; aunts, Maggie (Jack) Jackson, Tena (Michael) Suttle and son, Michael, daughter, Michelle and her children, Taylor and Braxton; special aunts, Libby and Mary Robertson from South Carolina, and many other family and friends to numerous to count.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, March 28, 2014, at Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley, with Pastor Garry Hall officiating. Following the services she will be laid to rest at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.
