Norma Jean Cook Brooks

SABINE — Norma Jean Cook Brooks, 75, of Sabine, passed away at home Saturday, March 15, 2014 following a short illness.

Born July 31, 1938, in Wyoming County, she was the daughter of the late Oley Cook and Annie Graham Cook.

Norma attended the New Life Community Church. She enjoyed gardening, cooking, going to church, being with her family and spending time with her two special grandchildren, Autumn and Connor DeHart.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Bernard H. Brooks and a step-great-grandchild, Xander Jace Brooks.

Survivors include her daughter, Lynn DeHart and her husband, Phil of Sabine; three step-sons, Dale Brooks and his wife, Mary of Chester, Va., Gaylan Brooks and his wife, Cindy of Beckley and Randy Brooks and his wife, Sherry of Sabine; a step-daughter, Pam Hawkins and her husband, Wayne of King, N.C.; three brothers, James Cook and Huey Cook, both of Oceana and Dale Cook of Mullens; three sisters, Dottie Massey of Sabine, Gwen Acord of Glen Fork and Tammy Cook of Sabine; two grandchildren; six step grandchildren and 12 step-great- grandchildren.                                                                                                                                                              

A celebration of Norma’s life will be held at 1 p.m., Wednesday, March 19, 2014, in the Calfee Funeral Service Chapel, Pineville with Minister Rondal Tilley officiating. Burial will follow in the Pine Grove Church Cemetery, Ravencliff.

The family will receive friends from noon until the time of the service.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Myles L. Feury

GAP MILLS — Myles L. Feury, 75, of Gap Mills, passed away Saturday, March 15, 2014.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m., Wednesday, March 19, 2014, at the Groves Funeral Home Chapel in Union with the Rev. Mark Prater officiating. Burial will follow at the Carmel Cemetery at Gap Mills.

Friends may call at the Groves Funeral Home in Union from 1 p.m. until service time Wednesday.

Thomas Lee Fields

Thomas Lee Fields, age 79 of Daniels, passed away at the VA Medical Center in Beckley, on Sunday, March 16, 2014.

Betty Sue Foster

WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS — Betty Sue Foster, 70, passed away Saturday, March 15, 2014, at Lewis Gale Medical Center, Salem, Va.

Services will be held on Wednesday, March 19, 2014, noon at the Pentecostal Holiness Church with Pastor Ronnie Seville and Pastor Everett Defibaugh officiating.

Friends may call from 10 a.m. until time of the service at the church. Burial will follow in Greenbrier Memorial Gardens, Lewisburg.

Mary Ruth Fleming Holdren

TASCALOOSA, Ala. — Mary Ruth Fleming Holdren, died March 13, 2014, at Hospice of West Alabama in Tuscaloosa.

She was a native of West Virginia, born at Eccles on July 3, 1931, the sixth daughter of Philip Grant and Gertrude Falin Fleming, both deceased.

She was a 1948 graduate of Trap Hill High School, Surveyor. She worked from September 1948 to May 1951 at the Chesapeake & Potomac Telephone Company in Beckley. She began her career with the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Beckley two months after its opening in 1951. There she met Arnold C. Holdren and they married in May 1956.

She was employed for 23 years at the Beckley VA Medical Center in various positions until transferring to the VA Regional Office in St. Petersburg, Fla., in 1974. She later transferred to the VA Medical Center in Asheville, N.C., where she retired. She moved with her husband to Manchester, New Hampshire, and later to Tuscaloosa, where Arnold retired from the VA in 1985 following 34 years of service.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by sisters Mildred Garrett Grimmett, Beatrice Morris Hallman, Vivian Pachuta Brown and Anna Lee Hargett.

She is survived by her husband, Arnold Holdren of Tuscaloosa; two sisters Myrtle F. Dalton, Beckley and Barbara F. Holden, Tarboro, N.C., a niece and two nephews.

Mary faithfully attended the First Church of God, Robert C. Byrd Drive (Now Cross Point Church of God, Crescent Rd.) Beckley for 25 years; then First Church of God, St. Petersburg, Fla.; Asheville, N.C. and Tuscaloosa, Ala. She also attended First Wesleyan Church of Tuscaloosa.

Private funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 19, 2014, in the Calfee Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Vondie L. Cook II officiating. Burial will follow in Calfee Cemetery, Mt. Tabor. There will be no visitation.

Chad Dean Lovelace

Chad Dean Lovelace, age 27 of Maple Fork, passed away on March 14, 2014.

Born on April 25, 1986, to doting parents, Lloyd “Dean” Lovelace and Robin Barley-Wingfield, Chad was cherished until his last day on earth.

Chad was a graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School, obtained a degree in diesel mechanics, a black hat coal miner and was of Christian faith. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, dirt track racing, motorcycle riding but most of all, he loved just hanging out with his friends and family.

He was preceded in death by paternal great grandparents, Ora Lee and Virginia Lovelace and James and Chessie Ellison; maternal great grandparents, Rev. Ernest and Ethel Barley, and James and Edith Johnson; grandparents, paternal grandfather, Paul M. Lovelace and maternal grandparents, Pastor Robert and Anna Barley; and an aunt, Rainee Lee Barley Price.

Those left to cherish his memory in addition to his parents are his son, Ryder Dean Lovelace of Maple Fork; grandparents, Dave and Ruby Riley of Beckley; his father’s companion, Sarah Evans of Oak Hill and her two sons, Chuck and Travis Evans of Oak Hill; a stepfather, James Wingfield of Hico, a girlfriend, Angela Yarber and her daughter, Adalynn “Bug” Sadler of Sophia, and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, friends and family, too many to mention, who will miss his smile and generous ways.

A celebration of Chad’s life is scheduled to be held at the Rose and Quesenberry Shady Spring Chapel, on Wednesday, March 19, 2014, at 7 p.m. with Pastors Walter Leach, Fred Lovell, Danny Legg and Roger Pauley speaking. Friends may visit with the family from 4 to 7 p.m. at the chapel. A private burial will follow.

RAINBOW CITY, Ala. — Jon Robert McDowell, 35, of Rainbow City, a native of White Sulphur Springs, passed away Friday, March 14, 2014.

Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, March 19, at Whatcoat United Methodist Church on Rt. 92 in White Sulphur Springs. Visitation will be from noon to 2 p.m. at the church with services to begin at 2 p.m. Burial will follow at Mapledale Cemetery. Robert McClintic will officiate.

Coy McKinney Jr., 74, of Sophia, died Friday, March 14, 2014.

James ‘Bert’ Miller Sr.

OAK HILL — James (Bert) Miller Sr., 92, of Oak Hill, WV died Saturday, March 15, 2014, at Veteran’s Administration Medical Center, Beckley.

Born July 12, 1921, at Sipsey, Ala., he was the son of Elbert Lester and Barbara Ann Arron Miller.

Mr. Miller retired as chief electrician at Milburn Colliery Company.

He was a member of Crossroads Apostolic Holiness Church at Bradley and a U.S. Army veteran having served in World War II.

His first wife, Pauline Miller; his second wife, Helen Miller and a son, Gary Allen Miller, preceded him in death.

Survivors include his wife, Agnes Cook Miller; three sons, James “Jimmy” Miller and his wife, Margaret of Scarbro, Troy Miller of Cottondale, Ala., Barry Miller and his wife, Pam of Sevierville, Tenn.; two daughters, Barbara Crisco and husband, James of Mooresville, N.C. and Margaret Honaker and husband, Ed, of Davidson, N.C.; 10  grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 19, 2014, at Crossroads Apostolic Holiness Church, Bradley with Rev. Roger Frye and Rev. David Christman officiating. Burial will follow at High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill with military rites conducted by VFW Post No. 3110.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday evening, March 18, 2014, at Tyree Funeral Home, Oak Hill and one hour prior to the service on Wednesday at the church.

Robert Louis Padgett

WHITMAN — Robert Louis Padgett, 81, of Whitman, passed away Sunday, March 16, 2014.

Funeral services will be held at noon on Thursday, March 20, 2014, at the Central United Baptist Church with Rev. Randy Skeens and Rev. Glenn White officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery, where military graveside rites will be conducted.

Mae Ruth Pegram

Mae Ruth Pegram, 86, of Coal City, passed away Sunday, March 16, 2014.

Jerome Stone

On Saturday, March 15th, 2014, our most cherished, Jerome F. Stone of Purity Hill, Eccles, passed away peacefully at Raleigh General Hospital. He was in his 89th year.

The first of five chldren, Jerome Fush Stone was born on June 14th, 1924, at Davy. He was the son of Fush and Stella Stoots Stone. His brother Robert Lee Stone and sister, Mary Rose McGraw have preceded him in death. His sisters, Ethel Burquist of Chicago, Ill., and Edna Mullins of Eccles survive.

Jerome was a World War II veteran, receiving two bronze stars. He worked 42 years in the mines at Eccles, where he was a member of UMWA local 5770. A member of the Moose Lodge and the Beckley Masonic Lodge No. 95 AF & AM, he was in the Scottish Rite and the Charleston Shriners. Jerome was a founding member of the American Legion of Beckley.

An avid outsdoorsman, he loved the times he spent with family and friends at his camps on the New River and Hacker Valley in Webster County. 

On June 30th, 1949, Jerome married his beloved wife, Margaret Audrey Pugh. To this union was the blessing of four children, Jeronna (Richard) Browning of Fairdale, Susan (Jim) Bond of Midway, Jerome “Pete” (Patty) Stone of White Oak and Terry Allen Stone, their youngest who died on Feb. 15th of this year. Jerome and Margaret were the proud grandparents and great grandparents of eight grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. 

The grandchildren are Misty Stone, Robert (Kristen) Browning, Russ (Laura) Bond, Keith (Lindsey) Stone, Beth (Dwayne) Williams, Chris (Staci) Stone, Phillip (Jocelyn) Bond and Kassie Halstead; the great grandchldren are Tripp, Jack, and Savannah Browning, Rachel and Layne Williams, Sawyer Bond, Madison, Erin, Josie, Colt and Sadi Stone.

On Wednesday, March 19th, at 2 p.m. we will honor the life of Jerome with a “Service of Remembrance” at the Melton Mortuary Chapel. Pastors, Garry Hall, Dick Sellards will be officiating with Pastor Dean Adams as the soloist. Jerome will be laid to rest in the Sunset Memorial Park at Beckley.

The family will receive friends from noon until the service hour.

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. — Otis Toler, 67, of Fredericksburg, passed away Monday, March 10, 2014, at the Mary Washington Hospital, Fredericksburg, Va.

Lila J. Upchurch

Lila J. Upchurch, 73, of Daniels, passed away on Saturday, March 15, 2014, at her home surrounded by her family following an extended illness.

Born on the 17th day of April in 1940 in Crab Orchard, WV, she was a daughter to the late Jesse Durham and Ratha Rice Durham.

Lila was a homemaker raising her children and taking care of their home. She also loved her flowers. Lila was of the Pentecostal faith and attended the Shady Spring Pentecostal Church.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Upchurch; grandsons, Billy Ray Durham and Ryan Stafford; brother, Daniel Durham; and a brother-in-law, Willie.

Those left to carry on her legacy include her children, James “Bubby” and wife Bobbie of Beaver, Billy and wife Cindy of White Oak, Leson and husband Bob of Florida, Linda and husband Randall of Maben, and Cindy and husband Michael of Daniels; siblings, Joann and husband Randall, Martha, and Gene and wife Jewel all of Beckley, Sandra of Shady Spring, and Yvonne of Crab Orchard; 13 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren also survive her.

The family also wishes to thank the wonderful nurses and staff of Hospice of Southern West Virginia for their unconditional care and support throughout Lila’s final days.

A Celebration of the life of Lila J. Upchurch will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 19, 2014, at the Blue Ridge Funeral Home Chapel in Prosperity with Rev. Benny Harper and Rev. George Garner officiating. Entombment will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens Mausoleum also in Prosperity.

Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home on Tuesday, March 18, for visitation.
