Franklin Delmore Bailey

BAISDEN — Franklin Delmore Bailey, 78, passed away Monday, July 29, 2013.

Larry David Begley

Larry David Begley, known to most as “Sleepy,” went home to be with Jesus on July 31st, 2013, after a long illness.

He was retired from the Mount Olive Correctional Complex as a Mechanic and was formerly employed in the coal industry and was a truck owner/operator. He was a member of the Bell Creek Pentecostal Holiness Church.

He was preceded in death by his wife Cindy L. (Cole) Begley; mother, Margaret E. A (Woolwine) Begley; father George W. Begley; brother, John Stone Begley; sisters, Gertrude Ratliff, Darlene Loving and Shanda Hicks. Survivors include his brothers, Delbert Woolwine and wife Midge and Richard Begley and wife Mary; children; Larry David “Chunk” Begley Jr. and Melinda Denise Begley Pauley and spouse Jay Pauley; mother of Larry and Melinda, Patricia Begley; stepchildren, Emily Wall and spouse Michael Wall and Danny Flores and fiancee Nicolle Garnish; grandchildren, Heather Kay Stone, Megan Nadine Begley, Katie Dawn Begley, Makia Bartch, Kristin Nicole Adkins and husband Austin Adkins, Jordyn Brooke Pauley, Rylee Faith Pauley and James Gage Pauley; stepgrandchildren, Allison Lilly, Shawn Lilly, Ashley Wall and Brett Wall; and a host of nieces and nephews.

He enjoyed playing and singing gospel music, and sang with the Dixie Trio, The Harold Family and The Harbor Lights.

Services will take place 11 a.m. Saturday, August 3, 2013, at Pennington Funeral Home, Gauley Bridge, with Reverend Lee Holliday and Reverend Richard Harold officiating. Burial will follow in Montgomery Memorial Park, London.

The family will receive visitors on Friday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Verlie ‘Buddy’ Blair Jr.

DRY CREEK — Verlie ‘Buddy’ Blair Jr., of Dry Creek, passed away Wednesday, July 31, 2013, following a long illness and courageous battle with black lung.

He is survived by his loving wife, Christine Blair; two brothers, Gerald and Tommy Blair of Charleston, W.Va.; seven daughters: Vicki Estep and companion, Gerald, Melissa Vance and husband, Chris, of N.C., Patricia Blair of Lubbock, Texas, Amanda King and husband, Jimmy, of Whitesville, Brenda Harte and husband, Marty, of Dry Creek, Betsy Townsend and husband, Dana, of Clay, W.Va., and Crystal Guillians and husband, Sean, of Severville, Tenn., Dusty Thompson and wife, Hillary, of Texas. He had 20 grandchildren: Phillip Estep, Jennifer Surrat, Stephanie Vance, Krysa Vance, Mary Sue Romine, Terry Romine, Courtney King, Jonathan King, Adrianna King, Jasmine King, Tammy Sanniti, Jay Lukasiewicz, Christopher Lukasiewicz, Kimberly Ellison, Elizabeth Wood, Jessica Lee, Steven Thompson, Dillon Thompson, Mike and Tyler G, and Michelle Hall. He also had many great-grandchildren: Brandon Estep, Cameran Surrat, Hailey Romine, Rylie Ellison, Breanna Ellison, Braiden Ellison, Christopher Lukasiewicz, Cassandra Lukasiewicz, Amber Lukasiewicz and Tyler and Alona Wood; special friends: Nancy and Earl Alderman, Fred Martin, Ron Bradley and Melvin Alderman; a special nurse, Ashley Morgan; and many more friends.

Service will be 1 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 4, 2013, at the Armstrong Funeral Home, Whitesville, with the Revs. David Cook, Wes Carr and Shawn Guilliams officiating. Burial will follow in the Pineview Cemetery at Orgas.

Military graveside honors will be conducted by the Madison VFW Post No. 5578.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Harold W. Colbird Sr., 81, of Columbus, formerly of Bud Mountain, passed away Wednesday, July 31, 2013.

Leora Vera Hamrick Collins

NETTIE — Leora Vera Hamrick Collins, 96, of Nettie, passed away on Wednesday, July 31, 2013, at the Nicholas County Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Richwood, after a long illness.

Leora was born on July 4, 1917, in Saxman, to the late Oscar and Launa Whitt Hamrick.

She was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother and sister.

She worked at Rubber Fabricators and BF Goodrich.

She was raised during The Depression and learned how to do a little of everything.

She loved her flowers.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Collins; son, Jerry Collins; daughter, Billie Joyce Strader; two brothers, Willard and Clyde Hamrick; two sisters, Elinore Boggs and Arleta Wilson Grimmet.

Survivors include her four children, Hazel “Suzie” Seabolt, Fenwick Mtn., Jimmy Collins and wife, Linda, Gassaway, Barbara and husband, Paul Vance, Winchester, Va., Lloyd Collins and wife, Carolyn “Tinkie,” Fenwick Mtn.; her siblings, Eddie Hamrick, Summersville, Mary Elizabeth “Jean” Chapman, Richwood, Helen Knight, Strasburg, Va.; 20 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; 14 great-great-grandchildren.

Service will be 10 a.m. on Saturday, August 3, 2013, at Simons-Coleman Funeral Home, Richwood, with Pastor Larry Russell officiating.

Friends may call 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 2, 2013, at the funeral home.

BALLARD — Clara Rosa Spangler Crawford, 95, of Ballard, passed away Thursday, Aug. 1, 2013.

Juanita Mae Donelow

On Monday, July 29, 2013, while surrounded by her loving family, Juanita Mae Donelow of Stanaford was called home to be with the Lord after her courageous battle. She was 63 years old.

Juanita was born November 20, 1949, in Stanaford, and was the daughter of Evestus and Mary Dove. She was a devoted grandmother and caregiver to her loved ones which she treasured.

Those left to cherish the memories of a loving daughter, mother, sister, aunt, and grandmother are her mother Mary L. Dove of Stanaford; three children Angie Kinsey of Middleburg, Fla., Robert Donelow and his wife Bethany of Beaver, and Jenny Lilley along with her husband Shawn of Crab Orchard; two brothers Roger Dove of Stanaford and Wayne Dove and his wife Rita of Stanaford; one sister Brenda Redden and her husband Donald of Rocky Mt., N.C.; two nieces Misti Philips of Nashville, N.C., and Christy Vickers of Beckley; a nephew Tommy Dove of Lanark and a host of great-nieces, great-nephews, and cousins. The light of her life were her grandchildren Shanda Donelow, Caitlyn Teeple, Brooke Kinsey, Abigayle Donelow, Raegan Kinsey, Austin Lilley, Bailey Kinsey and Addison Lilley.

Juanita was preceded in death by her father Evestus C. Dove.

Funeral services to celebrate the life of Juanita Mae Donelow will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, August 3, 2013, at Blue Ridge Funeral Home with Chaplain Charles Lilly officiating. Burial will follow in the Blue Ridge Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be: Roger Dove, Wayne Dove, Robert Donelow, Tommy Dove, Shawn Lilley, and Dean Dickamore.

Friends may gather with the family Saturday from 12 noon to 1 p.m. at the funeral home.

PRINCEWICK — Leona F. “Dobbie” Hall, 80, of Princewick, passed away Wednesday, July 31, 2013.

Jo Ann Carter Heffrin

BOKEELIA, Fla. — Jo Ann Carter Heffrin, 83, formerly of Eccles, died Wednesday, July 24, 2013, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Debbie Coleman, in Bokeelia. She was the daughter of the late Elisha and Goldie Carter of Eccles.

She was Valedictorian of the Class of 1949 at Trap Hill High School at Surveyor, W.Va. A registered nurse, she was instrumental in establishing several medical clinics in Florida.

She is survived by daughters, Mrs. Debbie Coleman, Jennifer Collins, Elizabeth Tenney; son, Joe Byrd; and sister, Sharon Ray Stevens (Ken) of Cross Lanes; brother, Wallace Carter (Annette) of Newark, Del.

In keeping with Jo Ann’s wishes, she was cremated.

Lee County Cremation Service in Ft. Myers, Fla., was in charge.



William Edward ‘Bill’ Menefee Jr.

William Edward “Bill” Menefee Jr., 78, formerly of Oak Hill, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, July 30, 2013, at Hopewell, Va.

Born December 9, 1934, at Crown Hill, W.Va., Bill was the son of the late William Edward Menefee Sr. and Hazel Haymaker Menefee.

He is preceded in death by his son, James Edward “Jim” Menefee of Covington, Va., and grandson, William Matthew “Matt” Saye of Prince George, Va.

Bill leaves behind his wife of 53 years, Rebecca “Becky” Owens Menefee, a son, William J. Rainey and wife Caroline of Charleston, a daughter, Betty J. Saye of Petersburg, Va., son-in-law, William Jay Saye of Oak Hill, daughter-in-law Michelle Menefee of Covington, Va.; and three grandchildren, Elizabeth Saye of Petersburg, Va., Brendan Rainey of Charleston, and Kate Rainey of Charleston.

He is also survived by sisters, JoAnn Kessler of Fayetteville, Mary Pearson of Oak Hill, Wilma Gelfeld and husband, Paul, of Gaithersburg, Md., Peggy Greene and husband, Carson, of Indiana, Pa., and Nancy Smith of Oak Hill, and two brothers John Menefee of Oak Hill, and Paul “Jackie” Menefee of Oak Hill, along with many nieces, nephews and cousins.

A 1954 graduate of Collins High School in Oak Hill and he was also a graduate of Beckley College with an associate degree in Education.

Bill was the former pastor of Fellowship Memorial Baptist Church in Oak Hill for 43 years. During that time he was actively involved in the Fayette Plateau Ministerial Association and held various offices for several years. Bill was happiest when serving God and helping others. Bill served Fayette County and surrounding areas preaching God’s word and caring for people. He loved spending time with his family, his church family, watching football and enjoying his grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at Fellowship Memorial Baptist Church in Oak Hill on Friday evening, August 2, 2013, from 5 to 8 p.m.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. at Fellowship Memorial Baptist Church on Saturday, August 3, 2013. Burial will be at High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill. Rev. Robert “Bobby” Pauley and Rev. Pete Lokant will officiate.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial contributions be made to Fellowship Memorial Baptist Church, PO Box 317, Oak Hill, WV, or Crater Community Hospice, 3916 South Crater Road, Petersburg, VA 23805.

Annie Mae Richmond Mickey

Annie Mae Richmond Mickey, 93, departed this life on Saturday, July 27, 2013, at 10:02 a.m. at Henry Ford Hospital West Bloomfield in West Bloomfield Hills, Mich.

Born December 10, 1919, in Welch, she was the daughter of the late James Arthur Richmond and Mary Maggie Burns Richmond.

She was united in marriage to the former Thomas Franklin Mickey, and from this union two sons were born. She moved to Detroit from Raleigh, W.Va., in 1955. She was a member of St. John Baptist Church, Raleigh, and The Greater New Mount Moriah Baptist Church in Michigan. She was employed by the IRS, Department of Defense and retired from the United States Post Office.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, on December 13, 1984, son, Thomas Anders Mickey, sisters, Mrs. Roberta Scott, Mrs. Pauline Palmer and Mrs. Willie Braxton, brother, James Wesley.

Those left to cherish her precious memories are: one son, Carnel Van Mickey, sister, Marion Geneva Richmond, brother, James Arthur Richmond Jr., grandchildren, a great number of nieces, nephews and a host of relatives and friends.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, August 3, 2013, at Central Baptist Church, Brooks and G Street, Beckley, with Rev. Thomas Moore officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Memorial Park, Beckley.

Gerald Bishop ‘Bud’ Wickline

Gerald Bishop “Bud” Wickline, age 77, of Coal City, passed away at the Bowers Hospice House on Tuesday, July 30, 2013,

Born on November 7, 1935, in Mead, W.Va., he was the son of the late William Joseph “Whistling Joe” Wickline and Goldie Ethel Coffman Wickline.

Mr. Wickline was a retired machinist. He left West Virginia when he was 16 years of age to look for work. Later at the age of 17 he joined the U.S. Air Force and served our country for 10 years.

Mr. Wickline traveled and lived in many different places. After he retired, Wickline moved from Richmond, Va., back to West Virginia several years ago and made his home in the Coal City area. His lifelong motto was “I try to make someone laugh every day.” He loved bowling and was in a Senior’s bowling league where he made a lot of new friends. One which was very special to him is Jean Isom.

He was preceded in death by his wife Shirley Jean Wickline; two sons, Gerald Bishop Wickline Jr. and James Tillis Wickline Sr.; two daughters, Baby Girl Wickline and Susan Carol Keeton; two brothers, Charles Wickline and James Wickline; and five sisters Alma “Ruth”  Holshouser, Margret “Helen” Kuiken, Nellie Gray Bell, Betty Fares, and Drema Wickline.

Those survivors left to cherish his memory include two daughters, Eudora “Rose” Coston and Diana Lynne Shuck; seven grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren. His loving companion for the past three years, Doris Bragg and family, two sisters, Patricia “Pat” Williams and her husband Tom, and Carol Williams. A daughter-in-law, Cathy Wickline, a very special nephew Gene Holshouser, and special friends Samantha Farris and Ronnie Ray Shuck.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel in Beckley on Saturday, August 3, 2013, at 11 a.m. with Rev. Gary Eskins officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Park in Beckley.

Friends may visit with the family at the Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home in Beckley on Friday from 6 to 8 p.m.

Pallbearers will be family and friends.
