Rev. Douglas MacArthur Cook
On Saturday, Feb. 16, 2013, our beloved Douglas MacArthur Cook, 70, of Midway, passed away after a sudden illness.
Born on April 30, 1942, at Slab Fork, to the late William Gordon Cook and the late Frances Louise Gibson Cook, Doug was 1960 graduate of Sophia High School and a lifelong supporter of his Bluehawks. He enjoyed working on the reunion committee and attending all the reunions he was able to, so he could catch up with his high school buddies.
Doug attended the New Mexico Highlands University in New Mexico briefly after high school and lived in Arlington, Va., during the first couple of years of his marriage, but chose to come back to the hills of West Virginia that he called home. He worked for J.O. Lively Construction Co., as a foreman and as a teacher and principal at Sophia Christian Academy.
Doug was an Ordained Free Will Baptist minister and was honored to pastor several churches in the surrounding communities over the years. He enjoyed mentoring young Christians and started classes to help those young converts in their walk with God. He enjoyed singing and playing the guitar and loved gospel and bluegrass music.
He shared his love of small coal mining towns with his family, talking about the history of the communities. One of Doug’s favorite pastimes was driving his Polaris Ranger all over the hills of Midway, Sophia, Stotesbury, Pemberton and Princewick. He was a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather who was the rock of his family.
Along with his parents, Doug was preceded in death by his sisters, Frances Elaine Cook and Kathy Lynn Cook Brewer.
Those left to cherish his memory include his loving wife of 48 years, Beverly Fitzpatrick Cook; five children, Jeffrey Douglas Cook and wife Connie of Midway, Gregory Allen Cook of Midway, Lisa LaDawn Edwards and husband Ernie of Beckley, Sherri Lynn Lilly and husband Charles of Ronceverte and Tina Louise Westfall and husband Gary of Beckley. He took great pride in his six grandchildren, Christopher Gordon Edwards, Samantha Rae Lilly, Nathan Andrew Lilly, Nicholas Aaron Edwards, E Dale Edwards and Evan Thomas Westfall.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 23, 2013, at Blue Ridge Funeral Home Beckley with Rev. William O. Tolliver officiating. Burial will follow at Hot Coal Cemetery.
Friends may gather with family Saturday from noon to 2 p.m. at the funeral home.
