Louis Angius Jr.

MOUNT HOPE — Our loving daddy, Louis Angius Jr., 78, of Mount Hope, died on Saturday, December 15, 2012, at Plateau Medical Center in Oak Hill.

Born March 06, 1934, at Tamroy, W.Va., he was the son of the late Louis Angius Sr. and Quinta Nenni Angius.

Mr. Angius was a a retired coal miner having worked for the New River Coal Company.

He was a member of the Mount Hope First Church of God and the UMWA. He loved to hunt and fish.

His former wife, Patricia Gay Angius preceded him in death on July 10, 2001. He was also preceded by a daughter, Teresa Dawn Angius and a brother, John Angius

He is survived by a loving family which include one son, Steve Angius and wife, Wanda of Fayetteville, four daughters, Joyce Wriston of Beckley and Lesia Higginbotham and husband, Richard of Glen Jean, Tammy Hancock and husband, Mel of Beckley and Angela Angius of Mount Hope, three brothers, Frank Angius of Sissonville, Sam Angius of Sissonville and Jack Angius of Fayetteville, and six sisters, Tracy Sykes of Atlanta, Ga., Ellen McCoy of Charleston, Rose Hayes of Radford, Va., Mary Webb of Milton, Patty Wooten of Oak Hill and Josie Wriston of Fayetteville.

He is also survived by nine grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be on Wednesday, December 19, 2012, at 2 p.m. at Tyree Funeral Home in Mount Hope, with Pastor Bryan Knight officiating. Entombment will be at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Prosperity.

Visitation will be held at Tyree Funeral Home, Mount Hope on Tuesday, December 18, 2012, from 6 to 8 p.m.

Ricky Higginbotham, Jason Higginbotham, Steven Angius, Mel Hancock, Jeremy Wriston, Sam Spadaro, Matt Wriston and Rick Higginbotham will serve as pallbearers.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial contributions be made to Shriners Hospital for Children, 2900 Rocky Point Drive, Tampa, FL 33607.

Clovis R. Bolen

HAVRE de GRACE, Md. — Clovis R. Bolen, of Havre de Grace, passed away surrounded by family on Monday, December 17, 2012. He was 87.

He was born in Princewick, West Virginia, to Levi and Zelphia Jane Bolen.

He was the devoted husband of Ramona Bolen for 62 years. He was the loving father of Rodney Averitt and his wife Becky of Spring, Texas, Dennis Bolen and his wife Nancy of Havre de Grace, Darryl Bolen and his wife Sally of Greenville, Ill.

Mr. Bolen was the adored grandfather of Dennis Bolen Jr., and his wife Ann Marie, Rodney Bolen and his wife JoAnn, Dr. Suzanne Buschjost and her husband Dr. Matt Buschjost, Kirk Bolen and his wife Amanda, Darren Averitt, and Jennifer Fairy and her husband Rick. He had 14 great-grandchildren. He was the dear brother of Dolores MacDonald and her husband Ralph, and the late Jim Bolen, Berland Bolen, Asa Bolen, Bobby Bolen, Melva Graham, and Trifina Bolen.

Mr. Bolen served in the U.S. Army during World War II, then served in the Maryland Defense Force for several years. He was a member of First Christian Church and was interested in local politics. He worked as the First Code Administrator for the City of Havre de Grace until his retirement in 1992. He and his wife Ramona were local entrepreneurs, and owned the Ra Bo Company. He was a life member of the Havre de Grace Decoy Museum, Concord Point Lighthouse, Susquehanna Lockhouse Museum, Chesapeake Heritage Conservancy, and the Havre de Grace Maritime Museum. He was a member of the Elks Lodge 1564 and a life member of the American Legion Post 47. Mr. Bolen was also a member of the Young at Heart Club for 11 years. He was also Past Chairman of the Fourth of July Committee in Havre de Grace.

Mr. Bolen adored his family and loved people. He was a building contractor and managed concrete pipe plants. He was a former Boy Scout leader, former member of the Susquehanna Hose Company, and served on the First Christian Church Board for many years.

A viewing will be held on Friday, December 21, 2012, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m., at Zellman Funeral Home, P.A., 123 South Washington St., Havre de Grace, MD 21078.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, December 22, 2012, at 11 a.m. at First Christian Church, 800 Giles Street, Havre de Grace, Md. Pastor Ronald L. Tabor will officiate. Interment will be held at Harford Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers will be Rob Mitchell, Rodney Bolen, Dominick Bolen, Kirk Bolen, Dr. Matt Buschjost and Dennis Bolen Jr.

Contributions may be made in his memory to First Christian Church.

STOLLINGS —  Lenore Blanch Burgess, 77, of Stollings, passed away Tuesday, December 18, 2012.

Juanita Farley Cook

Juanita Farley Cook, 73, of Holly Hills, formerly of Oceana, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, December 16, 2012, at Raleigh General Hospital.

She was born September 17, 1939, in Harts, W.Va., a daughter of the late Sherman and Rita Powers Farley.

She was a homemaker and member of Maple Meadows Chapel.

Also preceding her in death were a son Jeff Cook, daughter Karen Curley, grandson Taylor Cook, two brothers, and three sisters.

Survivors include her husband of 56 years Eugene Herman Cook; a daughter, Kelli (Chris) Roach of Bassett, VA; two sons, James (Anita) Cook and John (Ashley) Cook, all of Oceana; a sister, Florence Johnson of Kistler; two brothers, Lou (Phyllis) Farley of Brea, Ky. and Larry (Betty) Farley of Glen Daniel; seven grandchildren Jerad, John Michael, Sierra, Bryce, Jordan, Haley and Tommy; and a host of other loving family and friends.

Funeral services will be held at noon on Thursday,  December 20, 2012, in the Chapel of Stafford Family Funeral Home, Lynco, with Pastor Roland Cook officiating. Burial will follow in Palm Memorial Gardens, Matheny.

RONCEVERTE — Mildred Rebecca Erskine, 102, passed away Sunday, Dec. 16, 2012.

Service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 22, 2012, at the Greenbrier Regular Baptist Church, Ronceverte with the Rev. Tim Dillon officiating. Burial will follow in the Greenbrier Regular Baptist Church Cemetery.

Reba S. Harding, 68, of Glen Daniel, passed away Saturday, December 15, 2012.

Amy Lou Holstein

Amy Lou Holstein, 38, of Arnett, passed away Wednesday, December 5, 2012.

She was born July 11, 1974, at Beckley, W.Va., a daughter of the late Robert L. and Alice Kinder Holstein. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her grandparents, Don “Luttie” Holstein and AL ”Betty” Stacey along with several aunts and uncles.

Amy is survived by two daughters, Harleigh Gregory of Conover, N.C. and Shelea Rae Bradford of Arnett; one brother, Robert L. Holstein Jr. “Geneva” of Arnett; three nieces Brittany, Patricia and Samantha; one great niece Kylee; two great nephews, Johnathon and Mason and a host of cousins and friends.

Service will be noon Thursday, Dec. 20th, 2012, at the Armstrong Funeral Home, Whitesville, with Brother Forrst Ramsey officiating. Burial will follow in the Holstein Family Cemetery at Arnett.

Rev. Juddy Hurst

On Monday, Dec. 17th, 2012, our beloved, Rev. Juddy Conway Hurst of Fairdale, went to be his Lord Jesus Christ following a short illness. He was in his 84th year.

Born on April 6th, 1928, Rev. Hurst was the son of the late Connie Hurst and Hanna Farley Canterbury. His brothers, Bobby and Norman have preceded him in death.

Rev. Hurst was raised in Cove Creek. It was there he would meet the love of his life, Bertie Daniel. Bertie was his friend, confidant, biggest supporter and mother of children. They would be married for 29 years until her passing in May of 1977.  

Rev. Hurst and Bertie would settle in Fairdale in 1963, where they would raise their three children.

Rev. Hurst was a retired UMWA coal miner, retiring from Westmoreland Coal Company.  He had 37 years of service in the coal industry.

In 1959, Rev. Hurst was called to serve the Lord and went on to become a preacher. He started preaching the word of God at Cove Creek Church and from there served Horse Creek Church, Naoma Church, Stickney Church, Stevens Church, Coal Marsh Church and retired from Akers Church as assistant pastor.

Those left to cherish his memories are his sons, Jerry Hurst and his wife, Pamela of Richmond, Ky., Randy Hurst and his wife, Shelia of Fairdale and Kathy Daniel and her husband, Steve of Saxon; he was the dear grandfather of Todd, Kimberly, Tammie, Amy and  Matthew; the proud great grandfather of Madison, Bobby Allen and Mason.

Rev. Juddy Hurst lived a blessed life for the Lord and tried to be an example for everyone. He will be sadly missed by his family and friends. We, his family are so appreciative our father’s neighbors who always kept a watchful eye for him. 

On Thursday, Dec. 20th at 1 p.m. we will remember the life of this good man with a “Service of Remembrance” at the Melton Mortuary Chapel. Rev. Ardith Bailey will be officiating. Rev. Hurst’s final resting place will beside his beloved Bertie at the Sunset Memorial Park. The family will receive friends on Wednesday evening from 6 to 9 p.m. at the mortuary and one hour prior to the services on Thursday. The honor of carrying Rev. Hurst has been given to Mark Riffe, Keith Bailey, Nolan Dinsmore, Carlos Allen, Dwain Bunch and Craig Daniel.

LOGAN — Joan Scaggs Jeffrey, 87, of Logan, passed away Monday, December 17, 2012.

DANESE — William “Bill” (Driveshaft) Johnson, 55, passed away Sunday, Dec. 16, 2012.

E. Grayson Knapp Jr.

PRINCETON — E. Grayson Knapp Jr., age 93, of Alderson, W.Va., died Monday, December 17, 2012.

He was the son of the late Emmett G. and Glenna Rader Knapp. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Vella Lilly McMillion Knapp, two brothers, Harold Knapp and Charles Knapp, and a sister, Mary Elizabeth Dodd.

Born in Alderson in 1919 and a graduate of Alderson High School, he served in World War II in both the 25th and 53rd battalions of the Seabees and was attached to the 3rd Division of the U.S. Marines. Following the war he worked until his retirement for the C&O Railroad. He was a member of the Alderson Presbyterian Church, where he served as an elder.

Survivors include his stepson, Claude “Red” McMillion (Margaret) of Lewisburg, Tenn., and four step grandchildren, Kim Holly (Rhea) of Franklin, Tenn., Andrew McMillion of Madison, Tenn., Michael McMillion of Nashville, Tenn. and Laura Mitchell (Darryl) and their children, Grayson and Briggs, of Charleston, S.C. He is also survived by a sister, Anna Mae Chesher of Buchanan Dam, Texas, and several nephews and nieces, including Linda (Mike) Rider and Joanne Hardesty Lightner of Alderson.

Memorial Services will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday, December 20, 2012, in the Alderson Presbyterian Church. The family will greet friends one hour prior to the service.

Evada Tonia ‘Tiny’ Lester

Ms. Evada Tonia “Tiny” Lester, 49, of Lester, W.Va., died Saturday, December 15, 2012, at Allegheny General Hospital, after a short illness.

Born November 16,1963, in Beckley, she was the daughter of Vera Mae Lester of Lester.

 Ms. Lester was of Christian faith, graduated Liberty High School in 1982 and was manager of Pizza Hut for 15 years.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Lonnie and Virgie Lester of Lester.

Those left to cherish her precious memories are her mother, Vera Lester, of Lester; her daughter, Aynicka  Essence Bulluck of Lester; godson, Dajon Jeremiah Johnson of Washington, DC; and goddaughter, Nashalla Diane Mitchell of Columbia, S.C.; brothers, Ronald (Jenny) Lester and Richard Lester, both of Lester; sister, April (Matthew) Gavin of Beckley; nephew, Matthew Gavin II, nieces, Lashawnda Lester, and Ashawnta Gavin, The Williams Family and a host of other relatives and friends.

Jacqueline Venida Sorrells

Ms. Jacqueline Venida Sorrells, 62, of Beckley, died Monday, December 17, 2012.

Born November 8, 1950, in Tams, W.Va., she was the daughter of John N. and Margaret M. Dodson Sorrells.

Ms. Sorrells was a member of Welcome Baptist Church, Beckley, since she was five years old, where she served once as church secretary, member of the choir, and was on the kitchen committee. She graduated from Stratton High School.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her brothers, Raymond N. and Leroy N. Sorrells Sr.

Left to cherish her precious memories are her sister, Gayla Jean Sorrells of Beckley; her nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Memorial service will be 1 p.m., Thursday, December 20, 2012, at Welcome Baptist Church, 206 8th Street, Beckley, with Rev. David Allen officiating.
