Meredith Farrel Anderson

FAIRLEA — Meredith Farrel Anderson, 92, of Fairlea, passed away Wednesday, August 1, 2012, at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center in Fairlea.

Born June 16, 1920, on Coffman Hill, he was the son of the late Vern and Nellie Anderson.

Farrel was an Army Sergeant, during World War II, of Company E 393 Infantry Regiment with meritorious achievement in ground operations against the enemy. He served in the European Theater of Operations on or about 16 April 1945 and fought at the Battle of the Bulge. He was awarded the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star.

He retired from Vecellio and Grogan of Beckley as a heavy equipment operator, and was a member of Greystone Baptist Church in Fairlea.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his first wife, Quillie Howard Anderson; a son, Melvin Anderson; a sister, Illeta Deitz; and two brothers, Ira and Garnet Anderson.

Survivors include his wife, Nellie Daniel Honaker Anderson; brother, Maynard Anderson; special nephew, Larry Anderson; four daughters, Linda Cooper and Ronnie, Sharon Milam and Eddie, Anita Snuffer and Thomas, and Sandra Wills and Joey; three sons, Freddie Honaker and Olivia, Kevin Honaker and Cindy, and Larry Honaker and Kristi; twenty grandchildren; thirty-two great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be held at 12 noon on Saturday, August 4, at the Greystone Baptist Church in Fairlea with Pastor Youel Altizer and Rev. Thomas Snuffer officiating. Burial will follow in Rosewood Cemetery.

Friends may call from 10 a.m. until time of the service at the church on Saturday.

Edward ‘Ed’ Carlton Ballengee

HINTON — Edward “Ed” Carlton Ballengee of Hinton was taken by our beloved Lord on Monday, July 30, 2012, at his home surrounded by his loving family at the age of 76.

He was born at Clayton, W.Va., on March 17, 1936.

Ed spent many years living in the states of Maryland and Delaware where he owned and operated EB’s Trucking Inc., driving tractor-trailers for several companies throughout the country. Ed returned to his home state of West Virginia and retired in 1998 so he could enjoy the beautiful log home he built.

Throughout his life, Ed enjoyed his many miles riding his Harley-Davidson, golfing, working at Willowood Country Club, driving dump trucks for Whitten Construction Company. He also loved watching western movies and spending time with his family, friends and his many loving dogs. He was loved by many that knew him as “Uncle Ed.”

He was preceded in death by his mother, Clora Willey.

He is survived by his loving wife, Joan Boulden Ballengee. Daughters, Linda Gail Smith of Forest Hill, Roberta (Sissie) Carter of Huntington, W.Va., and Wanda Biddle of Marshalton, Del. Sister, Libby Arrigo of Hawaii. Stepson, Charles (Chuckie) Barnett of Drexel, Pa. Stepdaughter, Deborah (Deb) Mroz of Newark, Del. Several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 4, 2012, at Pivont Funeral Home Chapel in Hinton, with Chase Whitten officiating. The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until time of services on Saturday at the funeral home. Cremation will follow the service and interment will be held in the Clayton Church Cemetery.

James D. Blankenship

GLEN ROGERS — James D. Blankenship, 72, passed away Friday, August 3, 2012, at Saint Francis Hospital in Charleston.

A lifelong resident of Glen Rogers, he was born May 23, 1940, to the late John and Inez Elswick Blankenship.

James loved going to church for praise, worship and song. He really enjoyed working on anything mechanical; he had a gift for fixing things.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife, Marie Lafferty Blankenship; an infant daughter, Becky Sue Blankenship; brothers, Lee and Jerry; and sisters, Norma Sinecoff and Josephine Lafferty.

Survivors include three children, Michael Blankenship of Oak Hill, Joyce Merriman and husband, Ray, of Stoneville, N.C., and Brian Blankenship of Prosperity; brothers, Henry and John; sisters, Marlene, Phyllis, Darlene, Eleanor, Maxine, and Ruby; grandchildren, Amee Murdock and Tyler Blankenship; and a great-grandchild, Nadilee Murdock.

Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Sunday, August 5, 2012, at Pine Grove Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Ernest Francis and Rev. Jonathan Cresong officiating. Burial will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery, Ravencliff.

The family will receive friends 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday, August 4th, at Evans Funeral Home, 1081 Cook Parkway, Oceana, and from 1 p.m. until time of service Sunday, at the church.

Gatlin Evan Jones

CLINTONVILLE — Gatlin Evan Jones, 17, of Clintonville, passed away.

Born March 23, 1995, in Ronceverte, he was the son of George Earl Jones and Barbara Jane Oney.

Gatlin was a student at Mountaineer Challenge Academy.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by a sister, Sara Bennett of Clintonville; and four brothers, Joshua Bennett of Grassy Meadows, Andrew Bennett of Frankford, Joseph Jones of Clintonville and Logan Bennett of Clintonville. Also his grandparents are surviving, David and Betty Oney of Frankford.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2012, at the Wallace & Wallace Chapel in Rainelle with Rev. Rick Keener officiating. Burial will follow at the Wallace Memorial Cemetery in Clintonville.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 6, 2012, at the funeral home.

Albert Caleb Kiser

MOUNT NEBO — Albert Caleb Kiser, 25, of Mt. Nebo, died Tuesday, July 31, 2012, in Logan, of a sudden heat-related illness.

He was the son of John Robert Kiser of Stockport, Ohio, and Pauline Janet Wardwell Kiser of Leivasy and was born at Montgomery October 25, 1986.

He was a private pilot.

Surviving in addition to his parents: brother, John Morgan Kiser and wife Rebeca of Lodi, N.Y.; sister, Megan Faye Kiser and husband Christopher of Mt. Nebo; niece, Addison Irene Kiser of Lodi, N.Y.; grandparents, Barbara Goad Wardwell of Laurium, Mich., and John Milburn Kiser of Lorain, Ohio; and several aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

Memorial services will be conducted Saturday, August 4, 2012, at 6 p.m. in the Waters Funeral Chapel at Summersville.

Albert Lee ‘Red’ McClung

LEWISBURG — Albert Lee “Red” McClung, 72, of Lewisburg, formerly of Ronceverte, passed away Thursday, Aug. 2, 2012, at Greenbrier Valley Medical, Ronceverte.

Born May 23, 1940, in Union, he was the son of the late Albert Burrell and Mary Susan Marie Ratliff McClung.

Red had been a fork lift operator for B.A. Mulligan Company.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Ann Martin McClung; two daughters, Sharon Lynn McClung of White Sulphur Springs and Rita Sue McClung Shaver of Lewisburg; two sons, Roger Lee McClung of Lindside, and Daniel Wayne McClung of Buckhannon, Va.; grandchildren, Lee Brent McClung, Katie McClung, Isabel Anderson, Billie McClung, Randall McClung and Madeline Shaver; numerous sisters and brothers; nieces and nephews and other family members.

Service will be 4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 5, 2012, at the Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home in Ronceverte, with Elder Emory Pentek officiating. Burial will follow in the Lebanon Cemetery at Pickaway.

The family will receive their family and friends from 3 p.m. until time of the services Sunday at the funeral home in Ronceverte.

Reva Ann Spencer

LEIVASY — Reva Ann Spencer, 90, of Leivasy, passed away on Thursday, August 2, 2012, at her home following a short illness.

Born May 16, 1922, in Carl, she was a daughter of the late Watson Early and Anner Jones O’Dell.

Reva was a member of Nettie Baptist Church and loved getting together with others at the Senior Center and at family reunions.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Earl Andrew Spencer, in 1985; two sons, Calvin Lee and Roger Andrew Spencer; three sisters, Lovella Amick, Ruby McCutcheon, Elive Amick; and two brothers, Bob Early O’Dell and Genesee “Boots” O’Dell.

Survivors include a daughter, Carolyn Spencer DeHart (Don) of Leivasy; a daughter-in-law, Nancy Spencer of Rupert; two sisters, Leon Amick of Richwood and Rosa Thomas of Leivasy; two grandchildren, Greg Dehart of Leivasy and Julie Cornwell (Danny) of Hominy Falls; stepgrandson, Don DeHart Jr. (Christy) of Max Meadows, Va.; foster grandson, R.C. Cunningham of Leivasy; and two great-grandchildren; and she was dearly loved by her nieces and nephews.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, August 5, 2012, at the Wallace & Wallace Chapel in Rainelle, with Pastor Dave Gage and Pastor Troy George officiating. Burial will follow at the Wallace Memorial Cemetery in Clintonville.

Friends may call one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Vera Faye Thomas

Vera Faye Thomas, 65, of Daniels, was carried away on the Wings of Angels to her Heavenly Home at the Raleigh General Hospital in Beckley on Thursday, August 2, 2012.  Faye changed worlds peacefully while surrounded by her loving family as they sang the hymn “In the sweet by and by.”

Born on November 28, 1946, in Hugheston, W.Va., Faye was the daughter of the late James Wesley Thomas and Nellie Elizabeth Moore Thomas.

Faye was greeted by many loved ones on the other side of the River, including her parents James and Nellie Thomas, two brothers, Jay and Gene Thomas, a sister Louise Lester, two nephews, Daniel Bowen and Mark Vest, a great-nephew Seth Bowen, and a sister-in-law, Dollie Phipps Thomas.

Loved ones left to treasure precious memories of Faye include a brother Clifford Thomas and wife Janie of Beckley, three sisters, Barbara Vest and husband Bob of Shady Spring, Mary Thomas of Beckley, and Deonne Bowen and husband Robert of Shady Spring. Fifteen nieces and nephews, and several great-nieces and nephews are also among her survivors.

Faye was a Christian and loved the Lord Jesus with all her heart. She was a precious sister, loving auntie, and baby sitter to her nieces and nephews. She was a strong woman and in spite of many obstacles in her life she was always courageous.

Faye will be laid to rest on Sunday, August 5, 2012, in the Garden of Peace at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens at Prosperity. A Funeral service will be held at the Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home Shady Spring Chapel on Sunday, August 5, 2012, at noon with Rev. Ron Lilly officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home one hour prior to the services.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
