Ramona ‘Mona’ J. Prince

Ramona “Mona” J. Prince, 79, beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend of Beckley, formerly of West Raleigh, went home to be with the Lord surrounded by her loving family on Friday, January 10, 2014.

She was born on July 22, 1934, in Pax to the late Winfield and Veda Pinson Hall.

Mona loved the Lord. She set an example of her love for Him through her actions and the way she treated others. She loved singing in the church choir and is now a beautiful voice in Heaven’s choir. She enjoyed her Bible Class, was a member of Cranberry Baptist Church, loved shopping, attending anything that her grandchildren were involved in and spending time with her family.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands and the fathers of her children, Robert Sanford Givens and Franklin Delano Prince; and a sister, Aleda Hinkle.

Those left to cherish her memory include her loving son, Robert Alan Givens of Dallas, TX; two daughters, Cheryl Ann Yost and husband, Bo, of Beckley, and Patricia Ann Bostic and husband, Keith, of Glen Daniel; seven grandchildren, Jessica Givens, Robert Givens, Wyatt Givens, Brandon Yost, Jordon Yost, Chloe Bostic, and Ciara Bostic; two great-grandchildren, Anthony and Jasmine; a sister, Betty Kidd of Beckley; a special friend, Herb Bowyer; and a special pet, Chica.

Services to celebrate the life and faith of Ramona “Mona” J. Prince will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday, January 14, 2014, at Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley, with Pastor Roger E. Pauley officiating. Following  the services she will be laid to rest at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Friends may gather with the family Monday, January 13, 2014, from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the funeral home and from 12 p.m. until time of the service Tuesday.

Chick (William) Scarbrough

SHADY SPRING — Chick Scarbrough, age 73, passed away on Friday, January 10, 2014, at Bowers Hospice House, after a long battle with cancer.

Born on October 10, 1940, in Fitzpatrick, West Virginia, he was the son of the late Carlton Scarbrough and Erita Richmond Scarbrough.

Mr. Scarbrough was a retired coal miner with 27 years of service. He was a member of the UMWA and an avid outdoorsman and hunter.

He was preceded in death by his son, Michael (Scrapper) Scarbrough, his sister, Norma Thompson, and his brother, Carlton (Bud) Scarbrough.

Survivors include his wife, Betty, and three daughters and their husbands, Sharon and Edward Sheehan of Fairfax Station, Virginia, Sonya and Tad Lowry of Savannah, Georgia, and Sandra and Bill VanValkenburgh of Augusta, Georgia. Five loving grandchildren, Jeremy VanValkenburgh, Leah VanValkenburgh, Reagan Lowry, Sarah Sheehan, and Christina Sheehan. 

Those left to cherish his memory include a very special Uncle Charlie Richmond and his wife, Joann Richmond, of Crab Orchard, David Thompson, of Shady Spring, Brent Thompson of Florida, Keith Thompson of South Carolina, Shirley Richmond of Charleston, Joe and Katie Cox of Beckley, Joey Cox of Beckley, Patricia Williams of Beckley, MaryAnn and Donald Milam of Alderson, Dwayne Milam of Alderson, Mel and Jenna Cooper of Daniels, and Randy Mullins of Flat Top.

Viewing services will be conducted from noon to 2 p.m. at the Rose and Quesenberry Chapel in Shady Spring on Tuesday, January 14. Funeral services directly following the viewing services with Brother Danny Winders officiating.

The family extends their heartfelt thanks to the Bowers Hospice House for their care and compassion as well as to his nephew and wife, Eugene and Julie Milam of Alderson.

SPANISHBURG — John W. Shrewsbury, 66, of Spanishburg, died Saturday, Jan. 11, 2014.

Brock Reice Shumate

Brock Reice Shumate, stillborn son of Chad Daniel and Alexandra Christine Mitchem Shumate, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, January 9, 2014.

Brock was preceded in death by his great-grandparents, Billie Jean Shumate, Margaret and Lloyd Cochran, Larry Lively, Paul Mitchem, Mable Hedy Williams, and an uncle, Brad Shumate.

Besides his parents Brock is survived by a brother, Aiden Mitchem; grandparents, Tim Mitchem, Lora Lively, Greg and Pam Shumate, Debra Shumate; uncles, Timmy and his wife Amanda, Derek Mitchem, Jacob Mitchem and Dustin Shumate; great-grandparents, Felix and Judy Shumate; great-aunts and uncles, Scott and Karla Long, Susan Hargett and Mark Shumate; and numerous other family.

Graveside services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday, January 14, 2014, at the Tracy-Evans Family Cemetery on S. Sandbranch Road. Pastor Vondie Cook, II, will officiate the service.
