Jadina Bito

CHARLESTON — Jadina Bito, 83, of Charleston passed away Saturday, Dec. 21, 2013.

Matthew Thomas Cromer

It is with a broken heart that I gave my son back to God on Friday, December 20, 2013. We are blessed that he gave him to us for thirty-five years.

Matthew Thomas Cromer of Beckley was born on November 2, 1978, to Dewey Thomas Cromer J. and Donna Atwood-Cromer of Beckley.

Matthew was a loving and kind son, who was so much help to his family, and to anyone who needed it.

He will be sadly missed by all of his family, and to all who knew him.

Matthew graduated from Independence High School in 1997.

He last worked for Top Notch Custodial Service.

Matthew was preceded in death by his father, Dewey Thomas Cromer Jr., on June 3, 2013, and by paternal grandparents, Dewey Thomas Cromer Sr. and Virgie Altizer-Cromer. By maternal grandparents, Alvin Atwood and Ina Atwood-Keneda, and by his stepgrandfather Roy H. Keneda.

Matthew is survived by his mother, Donna Atwood-Cromer, of Beckley, and by brothers, Jeffrey Cromer of Coal City, WV, and Aaron Atwood Cromer of Beckley. He is also survived by many aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel in Beckley on Monday, December 23, 2013, at 11 a.m. with Rev. Frankie Lyons officiating. Entombment will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens Mausoleum at Prosperity, WV. Friends may visit with the family from 10 a.m. until service time on Monday. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers. Susan Jacobs DeBardi, 98, of the Villages of Greystone, formerly of Morgantown, died Friday, Dec. 20, 2013.

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. — Mercedes Ratliff Deskins, 94, of Traverse City, Mich., formerly of Huntington, W.Va., passed away Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2013.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 23, at Hall Funeral Home by the Rev. Steven Hamrick and the Rev. Keith Leap. Burial will follow in Miller Cemetery, Miller, Ohio. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 22, at Hall Funeral Home, Proctorville, Ohio.

Dorothy Faye Dillman

HINTON — Dorothy Faye Dillman, 92, of 207 Pleasant St., Hinton, died Thursday, December 19, 2013, at Bowers Hospice House in Beckley.

Born September 2, 1921, at Scarbro, West Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Lee Roy “Dink” and Bessie Arcenia Drew Ward.

Mrs. Dillman was a homemaker and member of the Hinton First United Methodist Church and was a member of the Summers County Hospital Auxiliary.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Earl Woodrow Carson, her second husband, Samuel Dillman, three sons, Earl Lee, Roy Edward “Eddie” and Roger Dale Carson, a granddaughter, Lisa Dawn Glascock, along with four brothers and three sisters.

Survivors include three daughters, Agnes Faye Glascock and husband Johnny of Fairfax, VA, Carolyn Reed and husband Jim of Hinton and Sharon Kay Smith and husband David of Clarksville, TN. Two sisters, Ethel Westfall of Hinton and Elizabeth Neely of Clifton Forge, VA. Eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren also survive.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, December 23, 2013, at Pivont Funeral Home Chapel in Hinton with Pastor Melissa White and Pastor Rick Duncan officiating. Burial will follow in Restwood Memorial Gardens in Hinton.

Friends may call from 6 until 8 p.m. Sunday evening at the funeral home.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

James Green

James Green, 63, of 128 Ringleben St., Beckley, died Friday, Dec. 20, 2013.

Gary Lee Hanshew

GREEN SULPHUR SPRINGS — Gary Lee Hanshew, 65, of Green Sulphur Springs, passed away Thursday, December 19, 2013, surrounded by his loving family, following a short battle with cancer.

Born April 28, 1948, at Danese, he was the son of Lillian Shuck Hanshew of Green Sulphur Springs and the late Roy P. Hanshew.

Gary graduated from Meadow Bridge High School in 1966 and was of the Baptist faith. He proudly served in the United States Navy aboard the USS Coral Sea CV-43 in the Viet Nam War. Following his service in the Navy, he went to work as a coal miner for 13 years. He then was an electrician for Meadow Gold Dairy for 5 years and retired after 16 years as an electrician for US Can. He was a member of V.F.W. Post #6506 in Rosedale, Maryland, and a member of the Jeptah Masonic Lodge #222 in Essex, Maryland. Upon his retirement, Gary came home to the West Virginia hills he loved.

In addition to his mother, surviving Gary are his loving wife of 41 years, Gail McQuain Hanshew; 3 sons whom Gary was so proud of Kevin (Rosa) of Lincoln, Delaware, Mike (Debbie) of Meadow Bridge and Patrick (Alicia) of Green Sulphur Springs; 1 daughter Barbie Coffie of North Carolina; 2 brothers Roy (Audrey) of Danese and Chris (Ersie) of Green Sulphur Springs; 2 sisters Marge Parker of Orlando, Florida, and Carol Moore (John) of Danese; and 7 grandchildren Whitley, Evan, Mike, John, Jacob, Johnathan and Cody.

Services will be 11 a.m. Monday, December 23, at Smathers Funeral Chapel, Inc., with Jimmy Fleshman officiating. Burial will follow in the Wallace Memorial Cemetery at Clintonville. Military honors will be conducted by the American Legion Post #32 in Beckley.

Hazel Rose Lambert

DAVY — Hazel Rose Lambert, 92, of Davy, passed away Thursday, Dec. 19, 2013.

Lundy Raymond Lilly

CHARLESTON — Lundy Raymond Lilly, 63, of Charleston, WV, passed away at the Bowers Hospice House on December 6, 2013, after a long illness.

Born March 6, 1950, he was a son of the late Lundy Lilly and Hilda Carr Lilly.

He enjoyed hunting and fishing.

In addition to his parents, Lundy is preceded in death by his sister, Myrtle Cochran.

Those left to cherish his memory include his 7 children; 3 grandchildren; sisters, Minnie V. Blevins of Lester, WV, Connie Roundtree of Newark, OH, Sharon Parsons of Delaware, OH; brothers, Estel Lilly of Sneads Ferry, NC, and Jerry Lilly of Troy, MI; also sadly missed by Dorothy Hodges and family and John Repper.

Per Lundy’s wishes, he donated his body to the Human Gift Registry.

A memorial service for Lundy will be held at a later date.

Leo Long

Leo Long of Clear Creek, WV, passed away on Thursday, December 19, 2013, at the Raleigh General Hospital in Beckley following a long illness.

Born on June 26, 1941, he was the son of the late Roy Long and Arbutis Stover Long. He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Debora Long Stapleton, a grandson Ronald Lee Maynor, and three brothers, Earl, Howard, and James Long.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Nancy Carroll Long, a daughter, Nancy Lee Burgess and her husband Fred of Artie, WV, two granddaughters, Ramona Schoolcraft and her husband Mike of Artie, and Emily Stapleton of Shady Spring. Three grandsons, Blake Maynor and his wife Robin of Clear Creek, Michael Stapleton and his wife Lisa of Beckley, and Cody Stapleton also of Beckley.

A special granddaughter-in-law, Helen Maynor and her fiancé Daniel Williams of Bolt. Four great-granddaughters, Katie, Cheyene, Autumn, and Desiree, and five great-grandsons, Tyler, Eric, Jeremiah, Hunter, and Austin.

The family gives a special thank you to our special friends, Paul and Donna Stover, and Dr. E.J. Salon and nurse Pandy.

Leo was a retired coal miner, retiring from Consol Roland Mine Local #1330. He suffered from a broken heart after the death of his grandson Ronald Lee Maynor who lost his life in the UBB explosion on April 5, 2010, and the sudden death of his daughter Debora Stapleton.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel in Beckley on Sunday, December 22, 2013, at 2 p.m. with Rev. Greg Scarbro, Pastor Ken Souder and Rev. Harold Williams officiating. Burial will follow at the Stover Cemetery at Burrell Branch.

Friends may visit with the family from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Elaine McGhee

Today, December 21, 2013, Elaine McGhee of Rock Creek, WV, went to be with her heavenly Father after a long illness.

She attended Lester First Church of God.

She was a beloved wife, mother, and daughter of the late Woodrow and Rita Edwards of El Paso, TX.

She is survived by her husband of 47 years, Samuel McGhee of Rock Creek, three children, Rachel McGhee Green of Whitesville, Wesley McGhee of Arnett and Matthew McGhee of Arnett; three grandchildren, Logan Tyler Green, Jordan McGhee and Chloe McGhee.

Graveside services will be held Monday afternoon, December 23, 2013, at 1 o’clock in the Scarbro Cemetery, Rock Creek, WV, with the Rev. Dale Birchfield and Pastor Evelyn Williamson. Interment is in Scarbro Cemetery, Rock Creek, WV.

James Ray Mills

James Ray Mills, 70, of Helen, passed away Friday, December 13, 2013, at Bowers Hospice House.

Born April 12, 1943, in Sophia, WV, he was the son of the late Clayton Alonzo and Mozetta Richardson Mills.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a brother, Jack Mills, and a sister, Ann McPherson.

James was affiliated with the mining industry most of his life. He was a 4-year veteran of the U.S. Navy.

Survivors include brothers, David Mills of Soak Creek, Jimmy Mills and wife Genevieve of Port St. Lucie, FL, Gary Richardson and wife Darlene of Salem, NJ; stepson, Matthew Elam; nieces and nephews Kim Jesse and husband David of Beckley, Michelle Lester of Beckley, Shane McPherson and wife Chandra, Dean Mills, Ken Mills, Renee Criner and husband Mike, C.J. Mills and wife Maria, Kelly Richardson, Vicki Richardson-Walton; many great-nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Friday, December 27, 2013, at the Mills Family Cemetery at Soak Creek with Pastor Phillip Farrington officiating.

Darlene Sue Cook Poindexter

GREEN CAMP — Darlene Sue Cook Poindexter, 67, of Green Camp, WV, departed this world and into the waiting arms of Jesus on Friday, December 20, 2013, at Bowers Hospice House after a short illness.

Sue was a retired bus driver with the Wyoming County Board of Education. She was an avid bowler and was President of the WV Women’s 600 Club; Director of the WV Women’s Bowling Association; President of the Welch Women’s Bowlers Association and was a Hall of Fame member. Her favorite job was as Momol to her two grandkids, where she was head cheerleader and biggest fan.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Lawrence and Zida Cook, her brother, Donnie Cook, her husband, John Poindexter, and a son, Brian Poindexter.

Those left to cherish her memory are her son, Les Poindexter and wife, Valerie, of Cross Lanes; a brother, James L. “Jim” Cook and his wife Sandy of Green Camp; a brother, John Cook and his wife, Lois, of Dallas, NC; a sister-in-law, Belinda Cook Bias and her husband, Jack, of Pineville; and a brother-in-law, Harold Poindexter and his wife, Ella, of Huntington. She is also survived by the lights and loves of her life, her grandkids, Alyssa and Jay Poindexter of Cross Lanes. Nephew and nieces, Gary Poindexter and his wife, Susie, of Mullens, Renee Watson of San Jose, CA, Kevin Cook and his wife, Kelly, of Leesburg, VA, Craig Cook and his wife, Stephanie, of Pineville, Tara Hatfield and her husband, Adam, of Green Camp. Great-nephews and nieces, Josh and Emily Poindexter, Jillian and Brennan Cook, Makinlei Hatfield, Piper, Maizy, Zane, Jax, Kadan, Riley, Nate and Mason Cook.

Sue is also survived by many friends and family members, including a lifelong friend, Barbara Hilton Bryson of Moulton, Ala., special friends, Robert and Carrie Houk, and the PHS Class of ’64 gang whom she considered  brothers and sisters.

The family wishes to express their gratitude to Dr. Jenny and the staff of Bowers Hospice House for their kindness and generosity during the time of need.

A celebration of Sue’s life will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, December 23, 2013, at the Cooper Memorial Baptist Church with Billy Joe Cooper and Silas Mullins, Jr., officiating.

Burial will follow in the Cooper Cemetery, Skin Fork.

Pallbearers will be Jay Poindexter, Gary Poindexter, Craig Cook, Adam Hatfield, Kevin Cook, Mark Cook, Robert Houk and Jerry Bledsoe.

William Ernest ‘Buzzy’ Rhodes Jr.

OAK HILL — William Ernest “Buzzy” Rhodes, Jr., age 82, of Oak Hill, passed away on Friday, December 20, 2013, at BARH in Beckley.

Born February 11, 1931, at Summerlee, WV, he was the son the late William E. and Minnie Cody Rhodes.

Buzzy was an electrician in the coal industry and a member of the UMWA. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marcelline Mullins Rhodes, by two daughters, Pamela Rhodes and Nancy F. Thomas; by a son-in-law, Jefferson Lee Davis; by five sisters, Virginia O’Boyle, Estel Matullis, Lorene Duncan, Josephine Rhodes and Genevieve McMillion.

Surviving are his daughter, Barbara Bell and her husband Teddy W. of Oak Hill, stepdaughter, Peggy Davis of Grandview, seven grandchildren, Lori Livengood and husband Nathan, T.W. Bell and wife Regina, Shannon Dixon and husband Jason, “Hard Rock” Thomas and wife Stacey, Jason Rhodes and wife Lori, Jeff Davis and wife Lori and Jerry Lee Davis, 17 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are four sisters, Norma Menei, of Mount Hope, Edna Criss and Georgia Fisher, both of Oak Hill, and Irene Elkins of Ohio. A son-in-law, Roscoe Thomas of Summerlee, also survives.

In honoring Buzzy’s wishes he will be cremated and a service will be held at a later date.

Ayron Dale Rutherford

Ayron Dale Rutherford, 18, of Hollywood, passed away. 

Memorial services will be 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 28, at the Groves Funeral Home Chapel in Union. Friends may call from 5:30 p.m. to service time Saturday at the funeral home.

The family requests in lieu of flowers that memorial donations be made to the Shriner’s Hospital for Children.

Larry Rodney ‘Lee’ Scales

Larry Rodney “Lee” Scales, 49, of North Beckley died Tuesday, December 17, 2013, of a short illness. He was born May 10, 1964, in Beckley, WV, to Edmonia Scales Oakley and the late Homer Watson Scales, Sr. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Michael Scales and Kip Oakley; two sisters, Judy and Brenda Scales; grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Dewitt and Cordie Scales and Mr. and Mrs. Julian and Lottie Medley.

He leaves to cherish his memory his mother, Edmonia S. Oakley; two sisters, Valerie Long of Raleigh, and JoAnn Scales of New York; five brothers, Homer Scales and Timothy Scales of Raleigh, Darrell Scales of Beckley, Terry (Pamela) Scales of San Pedro, California, and Bobby Scales of Raleigh; two aunts, Gertrude Scales of Columbus, Ohio, and Louise Lockridge of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; Companion, Linda Wallace; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Services will be held at 12 noon Tuesday, December 24, 2013, at First Baptist Church of North Beckley. Visitation will begin at 11 a.m. Rev. James Cox and Rev. Walter Leach will officiate.

Maj. Gregory V. Shumate

FAIRBANKS, Alaska — Major (P) Gregory V. Shumate, of Fairbanks, AK, went to be with the Lord Monday, December 16, 2013.

He was the son of Rosa E. Shumate, Garnet L. Coleman and Roy V. Shumate.

Gregory graduated from Glen Rogers High School in 1988 with honors. He received a B.S. in Nursing from Mountain State University and later a Master’s degree as a Nurse Practitioner.

Gregory entered active duty (Army) in June of 1988, National Guard on June 15, 1991, Air Force on April 8, 1996, and active duty Army once again on December 7, 2004, where he served as a physician for the active duty members and their families, until present. He served two combat deployments: August 1990 to April 1991 in Operation Desert Storm and December 2006 to March 2008 in Operation Iraqi Freedom. During his career, Gregory received 15 medals and awards, including: The Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, with two Campaign Stars, and the Kuwait Liberation Medal.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by his sisters, Laura A. Duncan and Frances Hill and her husband, Jerry; his brother, Michael D. Coleman and his wife, Kelly F.; nieces, Beth Duncan and Andrea Shumate and her husband, Larry; his nephew, Roy Duncan; and many other family and dear friends.

Funeral services will held at 12 p.m. Monday, December 23, 2013, in the Calfee Funeral Service Chapel with the Rev. Ernest Francis and Pastor Phillip Lafferty officiating. Burial will follow in the Lafferty Family Cemetery with full military  graveside rites. The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. until the time of the service.

LOGAN — Donald Gene Toppings, 85, of Logan passed away Friday, Dec. 20, 2013.
